Reviews of Aldgate, SA

"A perfect suburb"

20 minute drive to the city, but a world away. Leafy, temperate ,beautiful throughout the year. Popular with young families with great schools in abundance. Good selection of cafes, restaurants, pubs across Stirling, Crafers, Aldgate and Bridgewater. Nice houses throughout the suburb all with excellent plot sizes. Community feel where you will get to know people in the locale.

"From then....to now."

According to historians Aldgate was named by Richard Hawkins around 1864. The name was taken from one of London's seven historic gates, built during Roman times.
Hawkins had opened up a wayside inn to cater for travellers passing through to the Echunga gold-diggings in 1852. He installed a pump outside the Inn to encourage as many visitors (and their animals) as possible to stop for a drink.
Around 1860 he built the stone hotel which became widely known as "The Pump" and the area developed as a small rural settlement.
The Hills Land & Investment Co surveyed & laid out the township in 1882 and the railway station was built in 1883.
Many of the streets of Aldgate were named after London streets (e.g. Fenchurch, Oxford, Euston & Edgeware) and English counties (e.g. Somerset, Surrey, Kent & Suffolk).

Whilst the original pump has been relocated from the centre of the road to a nearby footpath, the lovely old buildings remain. Built along the banks of the Aldgate creek, the "Village" has retained its country town atmosphere and is a favourite destination for visitors to the Adelaide Hills.

Aldgate is a wonderful area in which to live. It still has that ‘small town’ feel, with good community spirit & local sporting teams, yet is broad enough to hide away if you want. The area has excellent local services, interesting specialty shops, cafes, and of course a great local pub. All of this and it’s only around 20 minutes or so from the CBD of Adelaide.

Then of course there’s Aldgate in autumn. Even more beautiful!
It’s no wonder that people from the ‘plains’ do Sunday drives.

"What to See & Do in Aldgate"

Aldgate abounds with good eateries, but more than that, it offers the visitor an array of crafts and fine arts that is hard to beat.

Aldgate has much to offer the tourist or day-tripper looking for something different in a day out in the Hills.

The main attraction in Aldgate is the Aldgate Pump Hotel which is known for its character, warmth and its pleasant restaurant with a fashionably wide range of beverages. It has been modernised and enhanced many times over the years but still has its 'old-day' charm.

Over the road from the Aldgate Pump Hotel is the 'Pump', plus the delightful 'General Store' - now a crafts shop - which dates from the early 1880's. It has changed hands and functions many times. At various points it has been a general store, a butcher's shop and, in the 1890's, the Hills Cash Store.
