"Bush living in the suburbs"

We wake every morning to the sound of bellbirds, rosellas and kookaburras. The area is dotted with significant gum trees and the local council is committed to maintaining indigenous plant species. The Blackburn Lake Sanctuary is the highlight of the suburb, where you can feel as though you're in the middle of nowhere despite being less than 20 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne. The house blocks are generally large, which contributes to the above-average cost of buying in Blackburn. It's a great place to live in privacy and solitude.

Looking for a home in Blackburn?

"Wonderful First Impression"

If you’re looking for a village lifestyle in a suburb that allows room to breathe amongst a backdrop of open green spaces and bushland surrounds, then Blackburn is sure to make a wonderful first impression. Blackburn offers a range of housing options; there are modest yet charming post-war homes, large garden allotments occupied by sprawling family homes, new architecturally designed contemporary houses, and townhouses. Offering quality schools such as Blackburn High School, renowned for its excellent music and arts program, plus a variety of state-run and Catholic primary schools ensure that a good education is easily accessed. This is a green, leafy suburb that truly caters for all ages with a strong focus on family, lifestyle, and community.

"Enjoy suburban living not too far from the city"

I've lived here for four years and it's certainly a serviceable suburb! With plenty of trees, green spaces, and walking tracks, this was an ideal location for living throughout lockdown. I love having bushy trails to explore and great local cafes to peruse. It's also a sleepy suburb without all the hustle and bustle of city living, which is great for my introverted self. Having lived in Croydon for so long, I can't help but compare the amenities between the two suburbs; unfortunately, Blackburn's do pale in comparison. When it comes to cafes, restaurants, boutique stores, and community spaces, Croydon has Blackburn beat. That said, Blackburn does have some fantastic highlights that I keep coming back to again and again. It's also the ultimate compromise between suburban living and city accessibility. A train trip to the CBD takes 20–30 minutes, depending on where you get off.

I could happily live here long-term, especially with my workplace just 20 minutes down the road. Unfortunately, property here is very expensive so the largest we'd be buying is a unit.

"Rural feel suburban living."

The Blackburn Lake Sanctuary is unlike anything else you will find this close to the city. The tall canopy trees give it a completely different feeling to any of the neighbouring suburbs.

"Road rager in blackburn"

I have lived on canterbury road for 3 years and I always think this suburb is quite nice. All my neighbors are nice and friendly. But recently I got a dog and I started to walk the dog in the neighborhood. Then I have been shouted at like ramdom yelling or racism comments a few time. Not like everyday but is that alway like this? Young twats driving a shitty car.

Really disappointed.

Conveniently located with all amenities at your fingertips, including Blackburn Station, an abundance of primary and secondary schools, shops and cafes, not to mention the beautiful Blackburn Lake Sanctuary. Great place to raise a family. Spoilt for choice with primary and secondary schools. Gentrified area with many people renovating old 50’s weatherboard homes who take pride in street appeal. Easy access to city with public transport. Friendly people, a place I like to call home.

"Replacement from Byron Bay. Smart decision."

Choose Blackburn because of it's greenery. And it's overall sense of vibe.

Few months later, in review, this place offers residential tranquility and nose-free predictability which Byron Bay fails at. (Since Byron is a hot spot for ongoing AirBNB comes-and-goes, tourist agitated excitement noise, laughter, and almost daily music bands within Byron's center... it was impossible to gain true "family-like" peace there.)

Living now in Blackburn, I don't miss a SINGLE tree, lighthouse, ocean sound... as is common in daily life of Byron Bay.

"Sacred Lands & Super Shopping"

The streams that have become Blackburn Lake Sanctuary were important to Aboriginals for how
many tens of thousands of years? It’s a sacred land and more suburbs should aim for parkland.

Don’t move here if you dislike trees (hard to insure your house in Blackburn due to trees falling on them), possums (expect to get friendly with yr local possum catcher) OR if you keep outdoor cats as pets (big fines for cats found in the Sanctuary).

Awesome that it is just 25 mins to the city on the train; the upgraded station has been a great improvement.
Eastern Freeway and Burwood Highway are relatively close and easy to access.

Bunnings and a DFO on one side and Forest Hill Chase Mall on the other (with a small movie theatre) make it extremely convenient for shopping, plus some decent cafes.
Local schools have been recommended as relatively good. There is a cricket and football field with associated clubs but the area lacks a basketball/netball court for young people. Another improvement would be a local pool.

The incredible strictness of Council in this area in terms of building as regards trees is pretty insane. You need stacks of money and patience to build here, but that is the trade off, because you are living in a very rare & green area (in what is the increasingly overly concreted urban sprawl that is Melbourne).

The locals are generally quiet, friendly, nature fans and mad about dogs, with a communal atmosphere created by Blackburn Lake Sanctuary. I anticipate the area will appreciate in value, given the focus on preserving nature in this suburb.

"A hidden jewel in Melbourne's crown!"

Where can you find absolute peace and quiet in an idyll surrounding with well-maintained houses but with several transport and shopping options at your doorstep, well Blackburn is your suburb to go to if those are your choices.
We have stayed in Blackburn since our arrival into Australia in 1994 and have never moved, why? There was no need, everything we had was at our doorstep and I can say it as for the first 3 years of our arrival none in our family could drive yet we never felt the need for a car as there are bus routes dotting and servicing every large lane. The Blackburn Station still has a small town feel with small cafes in its surroundings. Good schools -both primary and secondary - are there viz Boxhill and Blackburn High plus Burwood Heights.
If you are looking for a safe, family oriented suburb with decent, well educated professionals as your next door neighbors then this is the ideal place for settling down.

On the downside there is very little nightlife or exceptional restaurants within Blackburn (though Boxhill is just 2 kms away) but when you are living in a little piece of paradise, who needs that!

"Really good"

Lived in Blackburn for about 5 years before moving out, loved the place to bits. There just isn't any fault to it, a lot of greenery, distinguished and kind neighbours, low crime rates, quiet, and clean. It has a very homely and yet professional feel to the place. The council looks after the suburb really well.
Only problem is the pricing. You NEED to have an above average income to live here (single person). Parking is a problem, especially in the train station (seriously.... it is so congested there).

Blackburn has practically everything you could want. Excellent schools, shopping and community support. One of the best pockets would surely be near Junction Road/Surrey Road. Near the freeway, you can be in the city in 15 minutes or the Mornington Peninsula and its beaches in 1 hour. Slater Reserve is a hidden gem with walks, a community garden and playgrounds. Whitehorse Primary is a brand new school and Blackburn High has a wonderful reputation. Blackburn Station is only 5 minutes away by bus. There are unlimited options for eating out in Blackburn and nearby Box Hill. Most residents never want to leave!

"Fantastic suburb for small & large families"

We've been renting in Blackburn for almost 2 years and it gets better every month!
The neighbours are fantastic, it is incredibly quiet at night but at the same time during the day everything is within a stones throw.
Big box stores like Bunnings and JB are 5 minutes away by car on the golden mile.
According to hubby house prices have risen steadily over the last few decade but are ready for the next leg up over 2012-2013 so we are looking to buy in 2011. Still a few good deals around if you have patience and accumen with the real estate agents.

In summary to find a similar suburb to Blackburn you really have to move to somewhere like Surrey Hills closer to Melbourne but twice the price... you do the maths, we know what makes sense for us!

"Beautiful Blackburn"

I LOVE Blackburn very much - but it's become so expensive! If it's out of your price range to buy or rent in this beautiful suburb it mioght be worth looking at Nunawading - it's just one train stop further and still a great area with a new, "state of the art" primary school being built in Springfield Road.

Nunawading has a DFO. It has very good access to the freeway - you can drive to the city in 15mins. The new Nunawading stion is great and the train now goes under the Road and the traffic flow on Springvale is much better.

My friends recently bought an older, character home in Esdale Street that they intend to renovate. They just couldn't afford Blackburn so Nunawading seemed like the 'next best' thing. They are really happy with their decision and look forward to raising their family there.

"One of the Best"

As a person who was born and raised in Blackburn it was a safe and friendly environment to grow up in. Many years later, I now work as a real estate agent servicing the wonderful suburb of Blackburn. It is community orientated suburb with schools, parks and street scape that rival any suburb in Melbourne. The most astonishing thing in all the years I have been selling real estate is that when people move into Blackburn, they very rarely move out of it.

"Just Like Living in a Nature Reserve"

Featuring the lovely Blackburn Lake and Wandinong Sanctuaries, the Melbourne suburb of Blackburn is set amongst lovely parkland and bush and is home to an array of Australian wildlife. House blocks are generously sized and homes are also large, many of them dating back to early last Century. There are plenty of walking tracks popular with nature lovers and although all you can hear at times is the sound of Bellbirds, Blackburn is in a very central location close to all major amenities including Forest Hill Chase and Blackburn North Shopping Centre. Blackburn train station links residents with the CBD in less than 20 minutes and their are quality schools and a sports and recreational reserve.
