"Super convenient & Peaceful"

Been living in south blacktown for close to 8 years now. M4 & M7 are very easily accessible so very central & well located. Wespoint & all other smaller shopping centres have all the retailers & banks necessary, childcare options are good too.
Food options are rich & diverse also. Never had any nuisance or any issues. Sure you read things from time to time but which suburb is immune to this - Remember blacktown council is THE largest council in NSW so think about how this affects the numbers / story also.

"How Blacktown is a bad place to live"

In Blacktown, I have gotten my debit card stolen, people swear a lot, the is consistent drug use, and high crime rates. To summarise, Blacktown is a very bad place to live and also the network is really bad. There is no 5G in this area and there is barely and service. My dad’s friend was attacked by one of the people that were taking up his parking spot that he owned for his customers. Then the said no and broke his phone and ran away

Blacktown has great shops and restaurants but you will find trouble out and about particularly near the station. So be on your guard.
Otherwise a pretty good suburb.

"I think these reviews are fake"

Seriously, this is not a five star suburb. There’s a lot of great food but nothing in terms of cafe or bar culture. Main Street is definitely a cultural melting pot. Highest rate of violent crime in the city too, been a victim myself.

"Peaceful Blacktown"

I have been living here for the past three years and I really love this place.
It has a big station, many bus routes, and it is only 30-min minutes drive to the city. People here are nice and very friendly. The area has big shopping mall and has everything you need in it. Initially I was planning to build in Richmond, however, my builder (Nexa Homes) suggested me to build in Blacktown for a good capital value, and I'm glad that I built here. This place is really worth it. Schools, parks, work places, restaurants and transport are all easily accessible.

"Self Contained Family suburb"

I worked in the council for about 2 years and lived in a two bed unit for about 20 months. So I am fairly familiar with this place.

Firstly everything here is cheap - rent, groceries, clothing etc
Westpoint Mall - that has everything you will ever need
Public transport - 40 mins to city and well connected by road and buses to hills shire and NW suburbs

No matter what others say - To me this place was safe, cheap, well connected and best place to live in

"Decent amenities, but not close to anything in particular outside the suburb"

On print, there are quite some things to make Blacktown seem like a utopia, but it is lacking in several factors. Some of the streets seem a little run down, with litter lining them. Another is that Blacktown Is by no means close to parks and beaches, lacking severely in green open space. It's a decent suburb to reside in for low cost living, but I wouldn't advocate it thoroughly if your budget's a little higher. If you can get an abode in a residential pocket, then lifestyle will not be too bad.

"Never been in trouble as heard about."

I am staying in Blacktown for past 4years. I heard stories of pick pocketing, crime, junkies etc before coming here but I have never seen a single day that these things would have happened in my vicinity. I am putting off close to Blacktown station(10mins walk) and crime can happen anywhere but I see families with kids doing evening walk while I am on my way back, which is nice thing. Shopping centre is close by, Medical centre is pretty close with good GP and specialists. My daughter goes to Blacktown North public school and I am satisfied with the level and way teachers interact with kids. Public transport is very well connected. City commute is 35 to 40 mins. What else you'll look for setting in ?

"Nice & Conevnient Place - Excellent Transport - Shopping & restaurant options - One of the best Council in Sydney"

This is the one of the best suburb in terms of good neighbourhood, multicultural community, One stop Shopping mall(west point) 24*7 Kmart, big Library, Good schools & new university.

Best place to cater all needs to live with family - You can find various options for leisure , sports, & multicultural welcoming community groups.

Blacktown Council is great, which provide great service (eg extra rubbish removal services can be booked up to 12 times per year; great parks ) and regularly host events (eg the annual Medieval Fayre) at no cost, unlike other councils that greedily try to make money from their people at every opportunity.

Excellent transport service. Fast train will bring you in city withing 40-45 mins, Big bus station - several options to find buses connecting to various part of sydney.

Cons:
In night time sometimes junkies found around Station/Mall areas, however police patrolling is frequent in this area, and monitored and controlled whole time.

"The Bad Side"

I've been going back and forth to Blacktown for abt 35 years and the facilities are very good and shops, which attracts many different people from all walks of life, as it's a main interchange area. However, I would keep your eyes open at all times, as the Blacktown railway is the worst for Low Life people loitering that can be really obnoxious, especially some teenagers behaving badly. Usually near the taxie area situated near the many little shops , where they can cause you trouble, especially when your moving around to catch public transport, as it can be a hard place to avoid them, especially if you get stuck in the elevator with them like I did. Occasionally, I do hear Low Life people yelling and swearing and you may have one threaten you and be extremely rude to you and others. Do be careful and keep a eye out for your groceries and anything that looks like it holds money as their are many opportunistic people around everywhere, especially if you lining up to pay for groceries as my Mother was pick-pocketed by the person behind her. The Blacktown shops are good if you want something quickly and cheaply, although I always go to Penrith, Parramatta or the City shopping for a better range of items, as shopping around is always the best thing.

Not True! In every City you are going to get people that need help! I Taken my Kids and now Grand Kids to parks and reserves in the Blacktown area and have never had an issue. I also use Blacktown Train Station and while at times there may have been a few people hanging around the long strip, no one has ever bothered me!
It is Common Sense to be cautious in any Town, City or Country at night but there is lot's of activity around at night that I feel safe as a women! In regards to schooling we have some of the best education and educators in Sydney from Private to Public and We are getting a University on Main Street !!! No matter where you go you will always find pleasant and unpleasant if you show respect and kindness you will get it Back most often than not!

"Nice Mall, idlers at the station"

My experience of Black town is West point mall and railway/bus station close by. The bus/train connections are great and cover a wide area.

The area between the station and the mall seems to attract a lot of idlers who attract a lot of police attention. Once or twice I had to get off the train at Black town close to midnight and it wasn't a pretty sight. The 7 eleven there can't even operate at late hours. For someone using public transport late hours, I would strongly suggest looking closer to the city like Parramatta etc

I haven't lived there so I can't add more.

Great choice for shopping centres. Restaurants are not too exciting but you can find a lot of different cuisines here. Train services are quite good but buses are only good in certain places eg on T-Way routes. "Great for families and those starting out"

I have lived here for 6 years and counting!

In a nutshell:
-The outer borders for Blacktown (especially the streets on the Woodcroft and Marayong borders) seem to be the best for low traffic, quiet type streets and living.
-It's pretty safe overall. Stick to basic safety measures as you would in any suburb. I personally have yet to have an issue of any sort.
-Affordable, but prices are steadily increasing.
-Excellent medical centres and well trained doctors.
-We have our own hospital for emergency care (where every second counts), unlike most suburbs.
-Public transport is extremely reliable and punctual.
-A shopping precinct with everything you could need (Hoyts cinema, many places to eat out/dine in, Target, Big W, Myer, Coles, Woolworths and innumerable other shops).
-The huge park on Richmond road is wonderful for Sunday BBQ's and afternoon trips to the park.
-A lot of families and retirees live here, so a lot of decent people to interact with.
-Walking past other people going for a stroll on the footpath, more likely than not you will be met with a hello and friendly smile.
-Easy access to M7, M2 and M4.

Cons:
-Not enough trees and greenery on the streets. I really wish the council would look at this issue!

"Blacktown's a BIG suburb with different markets within the same suburb. South Blacktown always sells like hotcakes."

Blacktown's a fantastic suburb to live in, but there are different parts with some more desirable than others. South Blacktown near the Prospect border seems to be the most desirable particularly if you have kids and want to get into the only decent public school in the area which is Mitchell. They have a huge number of out of area people trying to enrol but only take a handfull every year. The transport is fantastic with lots of buses proximity to the M4 and M2. The new Wet n Wild water park is in Prospect as well, so South Blacktown is the go if you want to be close to that. There's been new development in Prospect with new houses bumping up the prices of older more affordable stock in surrounding streets.

"Blacktown - Get on Board"

Blacktown is fast shaking its tag as a "bad" suburb. With its major train station and great shopping centre already well known, the showground has just undergone a major transformation into a social hub for families, and next is "Wet 'n Wild" opening later this year. Put this together with a great variety of housing, that is still very affordable, and you have a suburb where people are flocking to in their droves!

"Simply lovely area!"

I lived in Blacktown since last one year with my wife. At first, Blacktown attracted us as a new immigrants with its comparatively affordable housing prices and transport. But, with a few month of staying here we simply fell in love with the area and we bought a property.
It has excellent access to transport and amenities. Only 30 mins to city and different areas using M4, M2, M7 and wonderful train and bus transport. The cost of living is comparatively lower than other suburbs. The shopping is really wonderful in Blacktown. There are huge investments are going on in Blacktown. I do not think the housing prices will remain same until very near future.

Just recently bought a property in Blacktown. It is not that bad as others think. In fact, it is far more better than other suburb.
Norfolk street is a great place to stay. Kids play at the street with their cheerful face, streets are clean and neighbour are very nice. Never see any junkie around this area at all.
I believe every places has their good and bad. No one ask you to walk around the station at midnight and carry lots of money with you.
Blacktown council just spent $16 million to develop an art and entertainment center in Blacktown showground. I am sure the property price in Blacktown will grow and it can easily double the property price in the next 5 years. Which part of Sydney you can buy a property around $350k with a good public transport, big shopping center and good medical facility around it?

"Blacktown Best in the West"

Originally from NZ and call Blacktown home for over 10years. Moved to the North Shore for a year once and always found myself coming back to Blacktown down the M2 every week because Blacktown had cheaper shopping including food, clothes and haircuts along with not having to have a permit to park outside your own house, plenty of things to see and do and it has a better community feel. So much to do in Blacktown cause it has; only Drive in Movies in Sydney, Largest Xtreme Screen in Aussie, Westpoint a huge shopping complex which has hosted many stars around the world that Westfields doesnt, Over 5 super RSL and Workers Clubs, Featherdale Wildlife Park, 4 big swimming complexes, Parlea Markets the largest in Southern Hemisphere, Eastern
Creek Raceway, Go Carts, Extreme Paint Ball, over 45 parks for kids to play along with the epic Narrangingy Reserve BUT to come in the near future to Blacktown is Sydneys largest Wet n Wild Water Park and Sydneys
largest IKEA. There is heaps more such as the easy access to go anywhere like Blue Mountains, Newcastle, Canberra and the City from Blacktown cause of the M4, M7, M2 and Great Western Highway. No I'm not the Mayor, I'm just a proud resident of Blacktown and yes there are "junkies" but they only number less than 5/6 near the taxi rank by the train station, as they go to the only place that will help them, Blacktown Hospital. I've never seen them hurt anyone and they havnt hurt me and considering that they account for less than 1% of Blacktown's growing population of over 280,000, I don't give them a second thought like the ones I see in Parramatta and the City. Part of me doesn't want people to catch on how Blacktown is actually a very cool place to live, because then there will be too many people and they will push the costs of living up here. So hoping some people stay ignorant and continue to think Blacktown is a "bad place", so my very comfortable lifestyle that I have here in Blacktown continues for longer :)

"Great family suburb"

When we were looking to buy a property three years ago, everyone discouraged us to even look at Blacktown. It is strictly blacklisted in everyone's (that I knew) eyes. However, we did hundreds of property inspections, drive bys and got hold of a map that has HC properties and managed to do our own research. This suburb ticks all the boxes. You can easily find a good property that is close to schools, child care, transport and shopping all within 1-2 kms.
There is noticeably less neighbourly spirit here for some reason, but me and husband work fulltime in the city so we have no real time to see who lives next door. Kids had neighbouring friends when we lived in Burwood (true!) but they have'nt found anyone here. Due to the diverse cultures here I guess everyone sort of keep to their own circles! Shopping is great with everything one needs in Westpoint or St martins village. When we bought our home we found everything to furnish our home in Homebase and St Martins Village!!! Child care availability is also great! I strongly recommend south blacktown. Great schools and peace and quiet (actually too quiet).
Families that are looking for easy access to leisure centre may want to live towards sunnyholt rd.

Yes, stay away from station or travelling by train in the late hours! Its just full of awful junkies ALL the time.

I personally have never experienced trouble, but I guess properities are still well priced,, compared to unrealistic prices across other suburbs,, great starter suburb,,, peace and quite, if you stay away from station,,,,, T Way takes approx 5 to 11mins net to get to station,,,,,,,,,,,,

"Best value suburb"

I think Blacktown is well undervalued for the kind of suburb it is. With access to M2, M7, M4, Great Western Highway and 3 major shopping areas (Westpoint, shopping village and Home base), things just couldnt get better. Very convenient. I think the ill-reputation that it carries does great to property buyers as they could get good value properties, however I think the ill-reputation is silly as for a big innercity like Blacktown, the crime rates are proportionately lower than many other suburbs.

***updated in 2016 ***I bought a property here in 2009 and sold it to move out to stay closer to work. Later decided to come back and bought another one. NBN is almost everywhere now and couldn't be happier with this new speed. My daughter now studies at St Patrick's Primary School and absolutely loves it.. we feel its a gem of a school with great teachers. The area seems to be getting expensive now. Blacktown hospital redeveloped has boosted the health profile and so did the recent Showground. The beautiful Nurragingy Reserve is minutes from where I live.
With show many entertainment options locally available, I challenge anyone to tell me a suburb that has it all like Blacktown does... yes except beach.

Good review, Blacktown does have a bad reputation I know but I have family that live out there and there is a real sense of community in Blacktown that other suburbs do not have despite being very far away from most things, I enjoy my visits Blacktown

"Best for family and affordable property"

good for family, couple, raising kids, very convinent to trains, buses, affordable public transport and taxis. schools and medical facilities are great. good neighbouthood and very peaceful, Blacktown is not a noisy suburb. It is like living into a small town. Neither you will feel like a CBD or country. Blacktown has got nice shopping centre westpoint and close to Doondside IGA SUPA. which is great for shopping. Most banks, postoffices and all aminities are available. There is a crime but it is decreasing a lot. Much safer than before.

"Close to everything"

Blacktown is a suburb with everything. Great shopping, libraries, hospital, schools and everything else - you barely need to leave your own suburb for anything. Thousands of jobs in the area. Not that safe though, and quite noisy. Yet the suburb has some very affordable houses.

The houses are old, and the traffic not good, but very affordable.

"Good place to live."

I moved to Blacktown 2 years ago and work in the city. When I moved here, I worried about living here since I heard it is not a safe area to live. However I like to live here now. It is safe, convenient, quiet and peaceful. It has a huge shopping centre. There are trains quite a lot of train to city, so I don’t need to wait for a long time. One pity thing is there is not a nice park near my place.

Hi, go to Nurragingy Reserve. They spent 3 million on a new Chinese park.

"Affordable housing in Sydney"

Blacktown is located in Western Sydney and is well connected by buses, trains and the M4 motorway. Many families choose to live out this way because of the affordability of houses and the convenience of getting to work in the city by public transport. Houses here tend to be of an average size and most residents are young working families.

Blacktown itself is a very self-contained suburb with a mall that houses many department stores, boutiques, cafes, restaurants and banks. For entertainment around Blacktown, there is the Blacktown Workers Sports Club and the Blacktown RSL. Both venues provide live entertainment on different nights, dinner shows and etc to entertain the whole family.
