Top 10 Brisbane Northern Suburbs

Hi Guys
I'm a newbie, relocating from Switzerland to Brisbane to a company in North Brisbane. I want something on the North Side that is family friendly because I have 2 young children (4 and 8 months). I can't seem to get a list of the top suburbs on realestate.com.au (other than going through each one individually). So far, the preferences seem to be The Gap and Ashgrove, but would welcome feedback about other areas, especially on the coast. My budget limit would be about 750K max and I would prefer a 4 bedroom house (for the relatives).
Any thoughts???
Cheers

There's plenty of choice with that budget, depends very much on the finer points about what criteria you would rate most highly with your search, close to work and schools for example.

Hi Stu

Having been to Switzerland many times I think you would prefer the older suburbs as they have more charm and safe. Life here is very different to Switzerland but Brisbane is a great City. I can suggest Nundah, Kedron, Wavell Heights. It really depends where you are going to work.

Hi Michael. I've been looking on the net and from what I've seen, the majority of these houses appear to be Queenslanders. While majestic in their own right, they are made out of wood, which takes a bit of a battering in the Queensland sun. The maintenance must be pretty horrific (and I have two small children, which means maintenance time is limited). I LOVE high ceilings, which I saw in Freemantle, WA when we stayed there. Are there any areas with that?
Cheers

Areas around Kedron and Wavell offer good access to the CBD and when the tunnel works are completed in early 2012 will offer good links to other areas of Brisbane.

With a 750K budget your options are many.

I live in a great masterplanned community called North Lakes (postcode: 4509 - oddly the postcode is shared with Mango Hill which is 'across the road' from North Lakes) and is excellent for young families. It has an abundance of parks and ideally located to Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast for weekend getawys.

I work in Brisbane CBD with a communte of approx. 1hr 15 each way (car 20mins + express train 15mins to central station). It a new and up and coming area (probably the next hub North of Brisbane) with a lot of instrastructure projects planned. You will be able to get a large place (4+ bedrooms) or build easily with your budget.

I think North Lakes is too far away, try Carseldine, Fitzgibbon or even Bracken Ridge. You have a good budget so should find something nice. Kedron is pretty good, but go any further towards Stafford and you will hit a lot of roadworks. Everton Park/Everton Hills is lovely but you will get less for your money.

The ONLY architecture you'll find with high ceilings is a Queenslander so if you don't like wood, you will have to settle for a box with low ceilings generally. Nice Queenslanders CANNOT be found north of Northgate or west of Gympie Road.

Maybe look at Springwood or Shailer Park on the south side. A lot of great high ceiling exposed timber beams and cathedral ceiling homes built in the early 1980s Shailer Park and Springwood plateau are great places to live

Hi,

The Gap and Ashgrove are not Northern subs. We call them North Western Suburbs. If you are from Swiss and you like this area, but only have 750k ( does this include stamp duty ) ?, then you may have to go North. I would stick within 10 minutes drive from your work
