Reviews of City, ACT

"A terrible place"

A total embarrassment to our great country that this place is our capital city. Even the kiwis across the ditch have a capital city that puts ours to shame. The place has no soul, it's like a giant Lego set, it is totally bland with nothing about it, no character or anything. And then there are the people. Omg the rudest, most ignorant entitled people you will ever meet. And very insular. If you are not born and bred in Canberra you will always be an outsider no matter how hard you try

"Country like living in the city"

For all the reasons people dislike CBR, are the reasons I love it. Traffic is not an issue as it is in other capital cities, my commute to work is a walk in the park. If I can't buy what I need in the City, I can easily buy what I need online, OR just go to a nearby suburb.

"Sweet sweet living if you have stable income"

Born and raised here, I think it's very accessible if you have a vehicle, has plenty of nice outdoor spaces, and comparatively extremely safe. However, very expensive and sometimes people are a little unfriendly/can be cliquey.

Rentals in City

"Canberra has great potential, sadly it's not fulfilled due to accessibility and transport reasons..."

Canberra needs a fast link rail network to Sydney. I think that would create allot more investment opportunities for the place and would help it grow and develop. Sadly Canberra is a very quiet place which won't appeal to most people.

Upon driving into Canberra, I loved the roads, the way the city was laid out, the greenery and the parliament. The universities were also great, for a undergraduate student Canberra is actually an amazing place. I could easily see myself studying there and then going into the city to meet people and enjoy my time, everything in Canberra is very accessible which is epic for anyone studying. House rent is also very cheap here, most properties cost a fair amount but are not justified because the rental returns are so weak. The time for this city to develop through road in traffic and people moving over would probably be around 20 years. Canberra for the most part offers very little as far as night life or even diversity of people. It's a small place that has potential if the right laws were passed.

I feel like first home buyers have a chance here, but it's not really the capital of Australia, it's lacking allot, and the parliament is great, the design is great, however the strategies to get people into Canberra are severely lacking.

Lastly, Canberra is not built near water, in general it's not an overly pretty or accessible city.

Great for

  • Close to the city, small city
  • It's the capital of Australia
  • Amazing for undergraduate university students

Not great for

  • Empty, void of people
  • Boring, dull, quiet

"Evrything But Space"

Canberra's CBD has everything to offer but space. It does have a high crime rate but if you act sensibly and always travel in couples or groups you should not have a problem. It is certainly the heart of the action as there are so many shopping and leisure activities on offer but it lacks the family infrastructure of schools and preschools. It is great for singles and students but families and the elderly might find it more of a struggle. Great place to visit but the jury is out on whether it is a great place to live.

Great for

  • Close to the action
  • Plenty of shopping and leisure options

Not great for

  • Lack of personal yard space
  • Crime
  • Traffic

"I lived in Canberra for 10 years. Here's my Honest Opinion."

I don't mean to be negative, but Canberra is mostly full of stuck-up snobs who assume they are better than everybody else. If you don't go to University and get a top paying job, you are automatically deemed "a commoner" by Canberra standards and are unworthy of living there. The rent is too high, the price for food and clothing exceeds a reasonable and fair price. I lived there for 10 years, and it was hell. Have moved and not looked back. P.s, if you plan on moving to Canberra, you better bring lots of money with you!

Why were you living in Canberra for so long before you left? No choice?

Not entirely true.

They come on visa for study or family sponsored which have restrictions also, that require them to stay longer here at CBR.

Once restriction is lifted then they move out and leave all the rude snobs behind.

"The Countries Capital"

Canberra, many a time one here's about this place being cold and a bit hard on the physical side to live with, but on my trip to this our nations Capital I've not found cold at all but then maybe I haven't struck when the wind is blistering down out of the high country which may well turn the place into an ice box, but then that's what you get when you're in the hot seat. Canberra has many fine places to visit and it' s well worth the trip the the nations Capital.

"The Centre of Everything!!!"

Known as Civic, this place has heaps of shops, great nightclubs and pubs. Fond memories of the merry-go-round in the centre of the mall from when I was a kid.

You also have Capital Theatre, where I saw the Mikado many many years back, it was a great venue.

The whole area has had a revamp in the last 5 years and definitely for the better.
