"Got to love Merlynston village."

Strictly speaking, it is Coburg North but Merlynston is a very different suburb than Coburg North which is off Elizabeth Street. Very family orientated, great community, good parks. Great cafes popping up particularly Poppy Cafe & Pantry(Derby St, Pascoe Vale.

"Five stars except for the mysterious smell"

(In regards to living in the Coburg Hill part of Coburg North) LOVE living here , literally everything is perfect in every aspect. The only issue is there seems to be a strong smell that wafts around our Coburg Hill neighbourhood and its driving us a little nuts! Could it be from the factories across the creek? Its almost remniscent of burnt toast, so perhaps the small bakery near the post office? Sometimes its really overpowering. Anyone else noticed this?

Anyway, great supermarket nearby, lovely creek, stroll to the tram not too far and everyones been extremely friendly.

"Lifestyle up and comer"

Not as well known as its neighbour in Coburg, but love living here. Close to the Merri and parks and has a lot happening at the moment while it continues to transform. While more people are moving here, new buildings and new retail and cafes are opening, it still retains a family friendly suburban vibe.

Rentals in Coburg North

"Surprisingly good"

House prices drove us further out than we had hoped for but I think it was a blessing in disguise ;) We bought a period house on a bigger block, 5 min walk to station & near a park for almost 400K less than a place one suburb over. 20min train ride to CBD or ride the Merri Creek trail.
Love Coburg Lake, the little village events in Merlynston, coffee from the generator, 8th nerve or Jack & Daisy (strictly speaking thats in Pascoe Vale). A good place for kids, lots of playgrounds, green spaces & good childcare.
No nightlife (unless you count the parties at the velodrome) and a huge industrial pocket around batman are downsides.

Great for

  • Green Spaces
  • Period Houses
  • New Cafes

Not great for

  • Industrial pocket

"Avoid the corner of Whitton Pde and Boyne St like the plague!"

My husband seem to have landed in the worst spot in the suburb. There are about six houses that border the sports oval (Cnr Whitton Pde and Boyne St) which are full of the most unpleasant neighbours we've ever encountered. They rev their motorbikes/hotted-up cars and do speed laps around the block until all hours of the night, and I'm just waiting for someone's child/car/dog/cat to get hit. There is a dog in these houses that barks for hours at night and on weekends (which is when we're home - not sure how bad it is during the week). It's an awful place to be. The new development at Coburg Hill looks nice, though - what a shame the NBN doesn't extend outside of it! The suburb's one saving grace, for us, is the convenience of the shops at Coburg Hill. The Woolworths is new, clean and well-stocked, and there's a 24 hour gym and a nice little cafe. What a shame that small group of people ruin it for everyone else.

"Young families delight, being safe quiet and sooo close to the city, some with views of city skyline."

Coburg North has more green and leafy areas, than can be expected so close to the city, such a friendly family atmosphere. BBQ's fill the air on Sunday throughout the Coburg lake and surrounds, best for a walk along the water on a summer afternoon.

Those who know stay within the estate and that's how they like it. It is estimated that Coburg North will increase 50% in land and house value within 3 years.

Look out for this one, a must for families and still priced very reasonably, with the new development in the Pentridge Village (shopping centre and cinemas) one can only expect a massive spike in surrounding area prices.

Highly recommended to all.

Greenery's comment is accurate and rings down the ages - a little Coburg history will throw some light on this. The lake precinct was so popular in the early days, thanks to its beauty and proximity to so much public transport, people used to travel on the tram from inner Melbourne and other points to Coburg Lake in summer to swim, relax and walk. It was regarded as a resort; a beach in the northern suburbs. Today it is regaining its former glory as the suburb and surrounds are repopulated.
