Craigieburn. It might sound like the type of suburb that would have been perfect in an 80s Australian soap opera, but its actually a sprawling area just 45 minutes north of the Melbourne CBD by train.
Jump on the Craigieburn train and 26 kilometres (and a few stops later) youre there. Like many of Melbournes outer greenfields suburbs, Craigieburn has enjoyed huge growth in recent years. New estates continue to pop up on land either side of the Hume Freeway.
The appeal for locals, apart from still-affordable land to build a home, includes the leisure centres, playgrounds, parks, golfing and public gardens.
Splash Aqua Park & Leisure Centre
As the hot weather begins to creep its way back, knowing where the best swimming locations are can make or break your summer.
One of the newest kids on the block, having opened in October, is the Splash Aqua Park & Leisure Centre. The park has not one but two large waterslides for the daring, leisure pools and a 50-metre pool for those who want to do their best Ian Thorpe impression. There is also an open-all-hours gym, spa and sauna and a cafe to unwind in afterwards.
Sure to be a hit with the kids, the centre is definitely the best way to cool down this summer.
Airborn Indoor Trampoline Park
If youre looking for something to put a spring in your step, make a beeline for the Airborn Indoor Trampoline Park in nearby Roxburgh Park. Youll find an endless supply of trampolines and mats here, with a main court offering 30 connected trampolines and plenty of room for tricks and flips.
There are two dodgeball courts and two basketball lanes, with all the space you need to perfect your slam dunk. Running walls and launch pads for flips round out the inventory, and you can also book parties and group sessions for a little extra fun.
Its a treat that can be enjoyed by the young and the young at heart.
Playgrounds and parks
Craigieburn is a family-oriented suburb, and residents young and old are blessed with an abundance of playgrounds and parklands to venture into and get lost in.
Anzac Park is undergoing an upgrade. When that is finished it will feature, along with the aforementioned Splash Aqua Park which is adjacent an amazing playground and an athletics track and sports pavilion. Visitors can also pack a picnic and set up in the parklands and take in the natural beauty for an enjoyable laid-back afternoon.
Craigieburn Community Festival
If youre looking for a little carnival atmosphere, Craigieburn has you covered. Held every March, the Craigieburn Community Festival features an array of festivities to suit all ages. Its easy to fill in an afternoon taking in all you can.
Live music and entertainment from up-and-coming artists, art displays, food stalls, a parade and a firework display at the end of the night are just a taste of whats on offer in a great day out supporting local industries.
Where to eat
Craigieburn also has popular places to eat out. One of the best loved (at least according to Google reviews) is Lago Fino, which offers delicious Italian food. Others include Fieste Family Restaurant (also with Italian fare) and Good Fortune Chinese Restaurant.
Also worthy of a mention is Artdeco Bar & Kitchen, which has a splendid-looking interior and also offers high teas.
With so many hidden culinary gems, its definitely worth the trip to the end of the Craigieburn line.
