"Doreen is a real surprise. Has the atmosphere of Eltham but more affordable"

We just moved in and are finding that Doreen is even better than we were anticipating. The first surprise is in how it feels. It feels very much like Eltham but without the price tag. That is not surprising because the majority of people are from Eltham, Doncaster and the area from there to the city. Many people whose parents live, say in Eltham, have themselves built in Doreen because of the proximity as well as the feel and the better affordability. Doreen has lots of retirees as well as young affluent looking families. It also has a good mix of professionals as well semi professionals and tradespeople. It apparently has one of the highest percentages of people from the emergency services, the police, ambulance and fire brigade personnel. This is because some years ago they were given a really good deal on the price of land to attract them. The town centre at lunch time has lots of well dressed mums with their bubs socialising over a cup of coffee from the superb cafe. A big part of the feel comes from the people who are of many different backgrounds. The predominant group are European but you see a great mix of people from all lands and cultures without any one group dominating. People are friendly and relaxed and obviously proud of their surroundings. Another thing that makes Doreen have a great atmosphere is in the type of houses being built here. Instead of characterless McMansions most houses are single story or multi level and look well integrated into the surrounds. Almost all have nicely designed and well tended gardens.

The second surprise is in the facilities on offer. One would imagine that as a suburb on the fringe of Melbourne it would be poorly served by facilities. That is not the case at all. We have two gyms, a travel agent, a great clothes store, a fantastic hair dresser, the best dentist I have ever visited, a great doctor, a podiatrist, a great greengrocer, a great pizza shop as well as an average one, a great fish and chips shop and a very authentic tasting Indian takeawaty/eatery. Then there is that great coffee shop with coffee and cakes as good as anything from any part of Melbourne. There are many more shops I have not mentioned and a lot more that are opening in a few months including a jeweler and a book store. Of course there is a Woolies, A Bakers Delight, a Chicken and Chips Store, a deli as well as a $2 type store. In addition there is a great cafe less than 2km away in Mernda. We have enough servos, will soon have a carwash, and a McDonalds/KFC etc. Eltham is only 15 minutes away, as is Greensborough and South Morang Shoppng centre. We have three great schools, Acacia College, Ivanhoe Grammar and Plenty Valley Christian within a few minutes drive.

The scenery and the country feel is the third great surprise. Doreen is part of the Yarra valley and is surrounded by forrests and hills. On the Northern boundary is Melbourne's oldest water catchment, the Yan Yean Reservoir. Everywhere you look there are gum trees and lots of them. Many of the gum trees are still saplings but in a few years this will be as leafy as Eltham. Beyond the gum trees you see lots of hills and mountains. The bird life and animal life is fantastic. If you love Cockatoos and possums you'll love Doreen. Literally at our doorstep are some great driving roads that lead to Kinglake and the rest of the Yarra Valley. St Andrews with it great pub with its lively music scene is only 15 minutes away as are lots of wineries and did I mention the great driving roads that are fun even when used responsibly.

Something else that struck us was that inspite of first impressions Doreen is not that inaccessible. For instance a trip to Ikea in Richmond took us just 40 minutes. Richmond used to be 40 minutes when I lived in Ascot Vale. Doncaster is 20 minutes. The airport is 25 minutes.

Like any great community Doreen has a healthy mix of demographics. The majority of people seem comfortable middle class but there are some people struggling and some people driving Ferraris and Porsches.

The disadvantages fo Doreen are its lack of a train as well as having no library. A library is supposed to open in the Town Centre slated to begin in a few years but at present people have to make do with a mobile library. Other issues are to do with the fact that Plenty Road still has not been duplicated all the way. Another issue has to do with all the construction and it is to be expected. We are having to dust much more since we moved in. Hopefully that will be fixed when all the land is finally built over in a couple of years in our part of Doreen.

Great for

  • Urban development with a distinct country feel
  • Great mix of young and old that are community spirited
  • The existing and planned infrastructure is terrific and eliminates the need to go too far

Not great for

  • No train

Since when has macca's been approved to build in Doreen.

Wilstan

You travel times are out by a mile.
Eltham, Greensborough and South Morang are 30 mins away.
Richmond Ikea in 40 minutes? Maybe at 4am on Xmas morning, but be prepared to take 1hr plus.

There simply has not been any improvement to the roads to support the rapid population growth in the area.

Public transport is useless, and despite many promises to improve roads and public transport, little has reached Doreen, with improvements only extending to South Morang.

There are only about 5% of properties in the entire town that have a yard big enough to swing a cat. Most blocks are 85-90% house with no yard whatsoever.

Resales in the area are terrible. House prices have dropped in recent years in the area, and continue to struggle with the continual new development.

I'm not sure how old your review is, but it appears as though, once the premium blocks were sold off at the fringe of the new estates, they have started to pack in the low price, high density houses/units that attract a much less desirable population than those cited in your review.

Sash
Sash

Wilstan, you must be the person on the road who holds everyone else up. If you get out of 2nd gear you might be able to make those travel times. My son goes to the gym in South Morang which is consistently 10 minutes away. The South Morang train station is 13 minutes give or take 1 minute.
Eltham is 15 minutes via Ironbark Rd. Doncaster Shopping centre is nowadays 25 minutes. The city (corner of Victoria and Lygon St) in peak hour early morning via Craigieburn Rd East is 55 minutes tops.
I have not measured people's back yards but still find the people in the supermarket and on the roads to be polite and courteous. One can immediately sense this when one enters Doreen.
I have not sold a house yet so have no experience but based on the time most houses are on the market they would not appear to have an issue selling. Quality houses sell everywhere. If you buy too expensive or over captialise then it is the seller's fault not the buyers nor a reflection on the quality of the suburb.

Doreen definitely has its shortcomings, of which public transport is on top of the list but on the whole it is a very very pleasant place to live.

ChristianS

Sorry, I have bought in Doreen and work in the city. I currently spend a minimum of 3 hours travel a day getting to flagstaff station. The area has no shade during no shade during summer, terrible traffic, no public transport and nothing for kids to do. The houses are so crammed in that you cannot enjoy any peace and quiet and all the children have to play on the streets. The road design and housing quality is definitely questionable. The local shops (including Woolworths) charge much more for their goods than the Woolworths in the city. I bought here because the rest of Melbourne is too much expensive. My family and work has suffered due to my increased stress and anxiety. I really feel that the area has been created just so the government can say that there is affordable housing whilst pigs get rich selling off the rest of Melbourne. Yes, there are some positives but nothing that could new close to making up for the effect it has had on my life. Even if the Merida train station is created, the Epping line is terribly slow and over crowded.

Sash

I am not sure where you live in Doreen. It must be a really new part that was previously empty paddock. Native trees usually give shade in about five to eight years. But lack of shade is common in so many parts of Melbourne. You can get streets with no shade in Essendon and Kew and Ascot Vale. In the last two years I have seen the size of the blocks of land shrinking alarmingly but again that is part of what is happening in Melbourne as our population grows. Most suburbs are becoming crowded. By and large the smaller houses are mixed with the larger houses so it all still looks pretty good. I have not seen any poorly designed roads or streetscapes. Yes there are those that are under construction and hence look less attractive but again in five years time it will all look nice and lived in. Obviously property in Melbourne is crazy expensive and I can understand that its good to live close to one's place of work but blame short sighted politicians and greedy land speculators for your plight not the newly establishing and very promising suburb that you live in. Take a positive view and lets find ways to make it better. Lets encourage more trees to be planted. Grow more trees in your own back or front yards, bring your kids up so they are good citizens and dont make too much noise in the street and above all dont stress about what you cannot control. Life is too short to stress. Ultimately everything in our lives is our choice. We choose to work for a certain company, choose our education level, choose to marry, have kids, buy or rent, etc etc so why worry. The nice thing is that we are finally going to get a train, which should take the pressure off the roads, somewhat. More and more people are telecommuting so that should help as well. By 2020 we should have access to the outer metropolitan ring road near passing near Wollert (check the VicRoads website).

ChristianS

Sash, considering you do not seem to agree with ANY of my points, do you by chance have any vested interest (other than being a home owner or resident) in the area? I think it is best if you declare whether you have any affiliations with council, developers or contractors. Melbourne IS becoming over populated. The lack of population and open space as well as satisfactory travel times and access to decent facilities and quality of life IS what made Melbourne great. If these things go then Melbourne looses what made it so special. I think accepting it as a fact of life is laying over and letting Melbourne lose its charm. Also, saying that we build brand new areas and writing off the negatives saying 'but the rest of Melbourne is like that' is a huge generalization. Not to mention paving the way for the acceptance of low standards by those doing the planning and design. For goodness sake, demand better in life and don't accept mediocrity!

Sash
Sash

ChristianS no I do not have any vested interest apart from being a home owner, which to some extent is a vested interest. Sorry to have come across as argumentative but I think our different perspectives might have a lot to do with our relative circumstances. I work reasonably close in Broadmeadows and can reach my workplace in 30 minutes. I gather from your post that you have a young family and I take it from that that you are younger and probably buying your first home. My kids are older and getting close to being independent. I live in a very comfortable house and have lots of nice trees around my house. The houses on my street are not crammed together. I dont see too many houses that are like that but agree that there are some houses.
I think another reason for our different perspectives may be down to stress. If you commute to the city daily and spend three hours doing so then obviously your satisfaction with your present lot in life will be less. It takes me an hour out of my day to commute.
I guess another of my points was that nowadays almost anywhere in Melbourne the traffic has become quite horrendous. Even inner city suburbs have become very congested. We need to learn to live in a more sustainable way and use more public transport and live closer to where we work or work more remotely (online). Many of your general points are correct. The government have taken our money first and then only begrudgingly are acknowledging our needs. The good news is that we may finally get a train. It may not solve all the problems but should make things better. Ultimately its going to be a choice of whether you like living close to work in a smaller crappier surroundings among the pollution, the homeless and the crime or do you prefer the slower pace in the suburbs with a bigger newer house but at the cost of a longer commute. I wish you and your family well. I mean what I said when I recommended planting a few trees and encouraging your neighbours to do the same. It might not solve your distance problems but your street and the comfort of your surroundings will look more relaxing and homely.

treelover

All I can say is the great majority of people in Doreen love it and are very happy and proud to call it home as do I . I can't understand the extreme views of some of the people here. it makes me wonder what their motives are. compared to most other suburbs this one is heaven. You can just see how clean streets and the shopping centres are and how courteous drivers are the confirm that this is a quality suburb full of quality people.

Another vote for Doreen. Its a lovely suburb. I am very sad to see some people trying to paint such a wrong image of it.

Is Doreen a safe neighbourhood? Is it safe after dark? What are your neighbours like?

treelover

Hi Anna, we feel it is very safe. We regularly go for a walk around 10pm and have never encountered any reasons for concern. People slow down for ducks and birds on the road and are considerate to other road users. Our neighbours are lovely and in general Doreen has very much of a community feel.

Hey Christian S...... Sounds like you have purchased in a location that is not suitable to your work and or family lifestyle.
Can i ask, did the town of Laurimer choose YOU to purchase here?
Or did YOU choose to purchase in the town of Laurimer FULLY knowing your situation before doing so?

PS: unfortunate that i came across this post so late.

Doreen is beautiful and peaceful suburb to live. It's friendly atmosphere and nice walk paths. Close to all amenities, improved roads, new train line, schools, bunnings, shops. The laurimmar Estate is breath taking. I don't regret moving to this area. I would recommend it.

"Possibly the best planned community in Victoria"

Visited family and stayed in Laurimar Doreen for a few weeks. You can tell this community has been thoughtfully planned with the residents in mind. Streets are wide and generous. Trees and flora are well established. LOTS of green spaces. I've visited a few family-friendly suburbs around the state and country and this one is clearly outstanding. Mainly white European demography. The community centre has a highly-rated Kindergarten and the local primary school is run by a principal who runs a tight ship and well respected. The school runs lots of programs for my nephews who are school aged. I felt very safe during my stay here even late at night. Most people are polite and friendly and I did not witness or experience any anti-social behaviour. There were enough quality restaurants and takeaways in the town centre to keep me satisfied during my short stay. Overall, it's currently number one on my list of suburbs to live in if I ever wanted to raise a family.

Green and leavy, Doreen is an ideal setting to raise a family. Doreen showcases a
lively town for everybody to enjoy, with countless lakes and parks scattered all
around. The local dog park, Lauries Field and Pinehill Walkway are all wonderful
attraction. The Laurimar Skate Bowl and Football Club create the perfect opportunity
to stay active.
A lively little hub, you can enjoy yourself at Laurimar town centre. Do your groceries,
have a meal or a haircut. You don’t need to travel far for any need.

"Living in Doreen for 6 years"

We live near Laurimar Town Centre.

Pros: very safe, countless parks and playgrounds, clean, fresh air, close to nature, family-friendly, house-proud neighbours, close to all amenities, a few good schools, Nillumbik shire quality with Whittlesea shire price tag (best kept secret... for now), diverse, down-to-Earth residents, no big noisy roads or traffic lights.

Cons: need to cycle, drive or bus 5mins to Mernda Train Station, then 60mins train ride to Southern Cross, needs an Aldi.

"Beautiful area!"

Recently moved to Doreen, to get away from the hustle & bustle of the CBD and im loving it!
Gorgeous suburb, with wildlife at your doorstep(kangaroos) views of the surrounding hills, and fresh country air, I feel like I’m on holiday everyday!
Train station, schools, shops all within close proximity & road upgrades soon to be completed.
The commute to the city can be quite long(due to road works) but hey, it takes 30 minutes to drive 1km in the city so who cares!!

"Pre-Covid rating 7, post-Covid rating 9.5"

We've been living here for almost 5 years in Doreen/Laurimar now and love it more each time we return home from holidays or visiting other suburbs. Doreen is just a very well urbanly planned and picturesque suburb. And when I say suburb I mean the whole suburb not just a couple of streets. Every street has well established greenery/trees. The roads are wide and smooth with bicycle lanes on the main roads and pedestrian footpaths that make every where walkable from park to park to park (there are a lot of parks!). The suburb is centred around a lake with lots of natural flora and birdlife which add to the scenery even more - I'm yet to find another suburb in Australia or the world like it. It's basically all young families here and everyone feels safe enough to let their kids go around the neighbourhood by themselves (no busy roads). It's such a wonderful feeling when you drive into the suburb from Hazel Glen Road or Flaxen Hills Rd and see the water, landscaped streets, neat lawns, brick houses. My only complaint was that it took 80mins door to door to get to work in the city, but post-Covid I only need to commute once or twice a week and can work remotely from home. I can see myself living here even after the kids are all grown up and I'm retired - there's 2 fantastic and affordable golf courses both within 9mins drive to Doreen.

"Pretty new, visually pleasing, well built-up; but the people will make you think twice"

Very nice looking neighbourhoods, uniform areas with many parks spread throughout. Lots of schools and shops around, surprisingly built up area, very suited to family life or even just couples. Roadworks are being finalised, so the commute out from Doreen is improving.

That being said, there's a very very large proportion of bogans. Bogan tradies, bogan soccer moms, bogan everything. ie, everyone drives like an idiot who will cut in front of you or cut you off. And you WILL hear bogan hoons every night revving their vehicles and doing burnouts in suburbia. You can tell people hate working customer service positions in this area because of the demographic they must deal with.

Also apparently there have been incidences of people threatening pets in the area? Shocking.
Think twice before moving here to boganville.

PS. Blinding LED headlights are par for the course out this way. People love using their highbeams and refuse to turn them off.

PPS. I'm super doubtful that there is a block of land available where you can't hear dogs barking at all hours.

Maybe you attract bogans like some people attract mozzies because I don't know of any bogans. Greensborough and Mill Park have bogans as do Epping and Wollert but definitely not Doreen. And in general drivers here are polite and considerate, sometimes too considerate. As for dog barking I've not heard any that could be considered continuous or habitual and I live amongst so many neighbours.

I think it's wonderful you are so passionate about the area and that's what we need to see more of

ashf1

Jason you must been unlucky to live right next to an inconsiderate neighbour or on a roundabout. The suburb is master planned with wide roads and homes set back far from the nature strips. P.S bogans who drive Audis and Mercs aren't really bogans.

"Living in Laurimar for two years and love every minute of it"

There's a few estates in Doreen. We live in the Laurimar Estate. Even before you drive into Laurimar town centre you automatically feel a sudden peace as you see the majestic old red gums standing tall against the flat grazing land as they have for hundreds of years. We have been living here for more than 2 years having moved here from the Hills district in Sydney and wanted something similar in terms of dwelling size and family friendly demography. We bought a large 4 bedroom home complete with a double garage, 2.5 baths, an afresco entertainment area and modern everything. The neighbours are friendly many with young families of their own and everybody's front lawn is neat and tidy (reminds me of the neighbourly-themed Hollywood movies). The suburb is nestled between Plenty Rd and Yan Yean Rd which are both being upgraded now which we are really looking forward to because it will mean faster drives to the city and other nearby bigger shopping centres such as Doncaster Westfield (reminds me of Chatswood), Greensborough Plaza (reminds me of Castle Towers) and Plenty Valley Westfield (similar to Hornsby). Newly built Mernda station takes you into the city in less than 60mins and run frequently. Demography is mainly Caucasian here but no racism. The estate has numerous well maintained playgrounds for the kids and pets to enjoy and several large ovals for sports and activities. There are several small restaurants and takeaways of all types of cuisines which are of above average quality which is enough for us because fine dining isn't exactly easy when you have small children.

My favourite thing about Doreen/Laurimar is my house. I love my house.

"Other than a HOME INVASION, Doreen has been swell...."

Lived 11 years in Melb, so far (from the USA): Beaumaris, Vermont South, Wantirna South, Mill Park, Mernda and now Doreen. Had an ATTEMPTED HOME INVASION this past weekend, which the police refuse to report -- they never responded to our home, and then did a shoddy job of Crime Scene Investigation, calling it the work of "drunken teenagers", perhaps. The local Leader editor refuses to print the story, siding with the police deparment's view of things. But hey, other than that little incident, life in Doreen has been peachy,

"Better in Mernda"

To be honest I do like it in Doreen but it does have a few issues. Doreen is a decent sized area that includes some farming properties on the north east side. The early Doreen residents enjoy rather large properties and leafy streets but Laurimer estate is over valued. The junk food strip is great if you want to put on weight but it’s a real turn off. While a traditional outside mall could have been a great feature, it has been ruined. There is a lot of government housing in Laurimer. This isn’t great either, I understand what the gov is trying to do but tbh I’d rather keep my kids away from the ice heads.

Over plenty road in Mernda Villages I would say has been done a lot better. There is a supermarket and the basic other amenities but it doesn’t feel as tarnished as Doreen. More like Doreen 10 years ago.

"Doreen much better than I expected"

I have recently moved to Doreen from Greensborough and I really like it here. Doreen has been changed so much in the last couple of years, there are more homes, more shops , more schools and is now more vibrant than it used to be. Doreen has a very leafy, greeny atmosphere like Greensborough and Eltham has, new and low maintenance. Doreen is only 15 mins to Greensborough and Eltham. 26 km from Melbourne CBD and in time to come Doreen will appears closer to the CBD when the roads Yan Yean Rd is fixed and the Mernda train station is here. I am looking forward to all the things happening in Doreen in the next few years.

"Doreen is a very nice place to live- highly recommend"

I have recently moved my family to Doreen into a very nice family home. I got plenty of space for the kids now and multiple living areas which is great! Homes in Doreen are on a reasonable size block generally with a low maintenance backyard which means less time required gardening or doing house work and more time I can spend with my family. It is really worth your money. Doreen is a very nice place to live. There are also a good choice of schools (Hazel Glen College, Ivanhoe Grammar, St Pauls Catholic) and shops (Lauimar area and at corner of Bridge Inn Rd / Yan Yean Rd) and petrol station/ car wash facility in Doreen. I am waiting for the Mernda Town Centre / Mernda rail to come which will make the area more vibrant than it is. "Doreen is beautiful, quiet with lovely people and pretty good facilities"

I am from Switzerland. I moved to Doreen because it and its surrounds remind me of home. Also the people are very nice and friendly. I no longer work and live a retired life and this place is perfect for me. All my friends who visit me are always remarking how nice and quiet and picture perfect Doreen is.

Recently there have been big improvements in bus services and it is now very easy for me to travel anywhere in Melbourne by bus and then by train. It will be even nicer when in early 2019 the train arrives in Doreen and Mernda area.

When I have to travel by road it is sometimes quite congested but that is so everywhere in Melbourne, which is why I have started more and more using public transport.

Doreen has now two or three doctors and some nice coffee and cake shops. It has about 5 nice restaurants with very nice food. One of them has even live music at times.

I cannot say how much I love Doreen and feel at home and at peace here.

Everyday I enjoy walking my dog and meeting all the friendly and relaxed and polite people and I take in the undulating green countryside and think to myself how lucky I am to live here.

I normally dont write reviews or go on the internet so much but because some people wrote some not so things I felt I had to share my perspective.

"Too far, too expensive, crap"

Way too far from the city. Very difficult commuting. Never have breakfast or dinner with the family because I travel so far. Constant sounds of burn outs, bogans, terribly loud music and construction work. Supermarkets charge way more for goods than in the city. Heaps of the properties are rentals and have unfinished nature strips and unfinished gardens. Lots of big dogs that never get walked. Tiny house plots with no gardens. Nothing to do for children. Tattoos everywhere. No shade anywhere. Even if the mernda train station is built the epping line is way too slow and over crowded. Bad design everywhere. God help you if you don't have air conditioning during summer. I bought out here because it was all I could afford but I should have saved up and bought in a different area. Would be a much nicer area if the plot sizes were bigger, the houses were spaced apart, the council planted shady trees, there were better parks and radically better public transport (which will never happen). Hard to get a good quality house built. The developers are dodgy.

Not great for

  • No train
  • Some less desirable persons
  • Traffic congestion

Christian I can only empathize with someone who is in your predicament. If you work in the city then Doreen will be challenging for you. Unfortunately traffic congestion is a reality everywhere. I have friends all over Melbourne and for those who work in the city any commute will always take over an hour one way. This is the same if you live in Doncaster or Point Cook or Glen Waverley.
Your comment about trees is strange. What do you expect will happen when farm land is converted to housing. Trees take time to grow. The great news is that most streets have been very nicely planted with native trees which will grow very fast. Hopefully in five years you will have your shade. In the meanwhile may I suggest buying a garden umbrella from Bunninngs. Add for the rest of your comments I haven't seen the Botham's nor heard the burn it's you mention. I see lots of cultured and polite people and enjoy the silence and fresh air at night and in the morning.

ChristianS

Ok, you definitely have a vested, commercial interest in the area. After reading your responses to my comments and others on this blog I cannot believe someone can be so defensive and optimistic about the area. I cannot see how you can disagree with ALL the points that everyone is raising. Also, your response to 'Wilstan' - "Wilstan, you must be the person on the road who holds everyone else up. If you get out of 2nd gear you might be able to make those travel times." is rude especially since he is making a very good point. Try travelling sometime other than 9am Sunday morning.

treelover

ChristianS your views are quite bizarre and come across as a troll. Do you even live in Doreen. Doreen is beautiful, clean and safe with an increasing number of amenities.

Jake123456

Another vote for Doreen. Its a lovely suburb. I am very sad to see some people trying to paint such a wrong image of it.

andrewh51

ChristianS you have got to be joking. There are more trees and parks in Doreen than any other suburb I've ever been to and I've lived in Australia for more than 30 years and moved around a lot. The houses are huge compared to other Melbourne suburbs too. Yes the commute into the city is long but you can't have short commutes and the beautiful nature like we have together. Thankfully for me I can work from home. Peace.

"Doreen... not what your being told."

Looks like the reviews here have been written by people desperately trying to talk up their falling property values.

The place is just another town full of little boxes. What started out with nice big blocks and parks, is becoming much more high density housing with ever growing government assited rentals and undesirables.

The roads and public transport are terrible and there is nowhere you can go to avoid the frustration of traffic.

Lots of promises have been made to the people buying into this estate and they have been very slow to deliver on even the basics of those promises to date.

It's a very anglo, with bland restaurants, and cafe's full of "want to be" cashed up bogans talking their latest aquisitions to keep up with the Jones'.

In summary, despite recent falls to property values the place is still ridiculously overpriced for the facilities, infastructure and distance from the real world.

There will always be someone who has a negative experience and as a result a negative view of any place. I would not place much store in what this person has to say. Not because I dont believe he is genuine ( I wont stoop as low as he did to suggest otherwise) but rather because I know for a fact that his view is neither a reflection on Doreen nor is it the view of the great majority of people who live here a love it. Doreen is a lovely place to live. Yes its far from the city and yes it is not perfect, like no place is, but it is green and peaceful and full of nice and friendly people. You can get coffee here that is as good as the coffee in any place in Melbourne, and that is saying a lot. You can buy pizza here that is better than any place in Melbourne. The Indian and Thai restaurants are similarly top notch. Yes there is some food that is bland but then that is your choice. The facilities are actually top notch. Great choice of schools and doctors, dentists etc. The real issue is lack of train and library but they are coming. In summary Doreen is a really beautiful place to live and a nice relaxing day to come home to. Having said that come and see it for yourself and make your own judgement.

Wilstan I have to totally disagree with you. Your views are so extremely off that it makes me believe you are some internet troll.

"A home, lovely area, but so far away"

We moved to Doreen 3 years ago, to an established home financially off we are the same as previously in Eltham but with much more land and a much newer home.
We considered this a fair exchange for the travel to kids high schools, work and children sport adding an extra 15 minutes to every drive - used to be 12 minutes but with increased traffic and constant roadworks this has increased and would expect an increase until duplication of major roads, Plenty and Yan Yean.
The travel does take its toll on you.
Now are children are older driving them to civilization is constant. Currently nearly 40% primary age children here so in the next ten years the number of teens roaming looking for something to do or parents driving them to and from train, nightlife will increase. There is already some complaint of teens hanging around the local shops.
Overall the people and place is lovely, picturesque.
There is a different culture here, some less well off than other. I've noticed a larger portion of people smoke and have tattoes, than say in Eltham, Doncaster area but that may be because the age of most is young couples, young parents and more accepted in this generation.
The community spirit around the Primary School activities is fantastic and I cant fault the wonderful Laurimar Primary.
If you can handle the drive it is a lovely place to live. However be prepared for a culture change one is great community spirit the other the presence of some less classy persons. If you have teenagers travelling far to school consider them and the driving them around weekends.

We live in Laurimar, honestly we just love it here. The first time we came here looking at land we fell in love with the area. Laurimar Primary is a great School. The shops are great and everyone is friendly. Their are people of all ages, most have other Family living near by, we have our whole Family living here now. There are so many nice parks and places to go for walks. Their are ducks and swans, kangaroos, birds. The lakes and trees are beautiful. We really need a Secondary School, in the area. I am so glad we decided to move here, when I drive in over the bridge after work, I am just so gratefull that I can call Doreen our home. It has a special feel about it, it's a real Community where people are living their dream.

"Doreen is a jewel of a suburb with a great feel and atmosphere."

Doreen has so many upsides. It abounds with natural beauty, the air is clean and the wildlife plentiful.
The breathtakingly beautiful Plenty Gorge runs through it and offers walking, bird watching and mountain biking. Doreen has a great and active community with many sporting groups including a cycling group that organises weekly rides along the offroad network that connects to the rest of Melbourne.
The rail and road network is good and getting better as is the shopping and eating out options.

Doreen is a wonderful place to live. With an array of wonderful homes, fantastic parks, shops and schools it is the ideal environment for all ages. There is well facilitated parks to entertain the kids and lovely lakeside walks for others.

The tranquility is what really stands out for us, you can go out in your garden virtually 24hrs a day and 7 days a week and enjoy a peaceful relaxing environment totally free from the hustle and bustle that generally consumes most of our lives.

"A great place for families"

Doreen is a great place. It is a housing estate though so you do get the odd party and dog barking but that's the same for most places unless you're on acreage. Laurimar school is supposed to be good and ours are a Yarrambat school which is excellent. We've lived here for 2 years and can't find fault with it. The traffic down the yan yean road is bad during the morning rush hour though but traffic in Doreen itself is okay. The parks are great and the Yan Yean resevoir near by is good for a quick walk.

A very nice place to live. We are looking to buy land in Doreen and have been there many times. We have shopped there, gone for walks and looked at several houses and land. Hopefully we find something soon before it gets too pricey. Anyway it is right now probably the nicest new suburb out there. Way better than other new suburbs in the West or South East or even places like Epping North.

"If you love the countryside, tranquility and nice people you'll really fall for Doreen"

Doreen is the new Eltham. I have so many friends who live there and now we are building. Most of my friends who live there were unable to afford Eltham and so moved out to a suburb that they could afford. Doreen has many nice developments. We have bought land in Laurimar, which I think is the nicest. Having said that all developments are of a very high quality. Hopefully we will commence building pretty soon. Anyway it has a nice supermarket, nice greengrocer, a shop that makes very Yummy Pizza and a very good quality Indian takeaway. Then there is the proximity to Yan Yean reservoir and all its trails and tracks. We cannot wait to move in..

THE FOLLOWING TEXT WAS ADDED TWO YEARS LATER: We now have been living in Doreen for almost two years. For all intents and purposes the honeymoon period is over. However our opinion of Doreen has actually improved even further. Over the last two years the shopping options have more than doubled. We now have three gyms and many really nice restaurants. The quality feel has not diminished in any way and we truly love coming home in the evening. From almost all directions you get this impression that Doreen is in a lovely green valley, which makes the five ten minutes extra drive worth it. We have made lots of friends and the kids are enjoying their school. The wildlife and the general atmosphere is one of serenity. It also is quite conveniently located. It takes 30 minutes to Ringwood North, 25 minutes to Doncaster Westfield. 15 minutes to the Greensborough Shopping Centre and the great aquatic centre next to it. RMIT and Latrobe campuses in Bundoora are 22 minutes away. The CBD is 45 minutes in off peak travel and 55 minutes to an hour in peak. If Doreen had a tag line it would be "A very nice place to come home to".

TEXT ADDED THREE YEARS AFTER THE FIRST: We still live in Doreen and are enjoying it. I love the undulating streets and get a great buzz out of going for a walk. Most of my walks takes me through at least four parks and by the time I return home I am nicely tired. At night when we return home it looks so picture postcard pretty and nicely laid out that we sometimes have to pinch ourselves. Yes there are still some streets that are under consstruction but we are finally seeing the end of it. Most of Lend Lease land has sold out so Laurimar has very few remaining blocks that are not already established or under construction. The street trees are starting to grow a nice green canopy over the newer parts and that streetscapes are starting to bloom nicely. The last stage of the shopping centre is being built and its still looking very promising. The great news is that the train is finally going to be built. Hopefully by 2018 most of the public transport issues will be resolved. I am pretty sure I will still live here then. If I remember I might even add another paragraph below.

"Very very nice suburb that is remarkable for its natural beauty, tranquility and the quality of its people"

We live in Laurimar and cannot say enough nice things about it. It has very nice people. It is nicely laid out with beautiful parks and reserves. Its now got a very nice shopping centre. We used to live in Mill Park and used to hear hoons doing burnouts every night. In Doreen you get nothing like that. It is also very convenient with good access to shopping centres. Northland is 24 minutes away, Westfield in South Morang and Greensborough Plaza are 11 and 14 minutes away. There is expected to be a train station build in Mernda eventually on the corner of Plenty and Bridge Inn Roads as well as the Outer Ring Road built by the end of the decade will bring freeway access as close as Bridge Inn Rd (5 minutes drive). Great feel great future great place.

You must have had a very bad experience which I am sorry for. Your review does however seem very harsh and damning of what is a lovely community. What has always struck me about Doreen is the people. They are on the whole better mannered and more considerate and seemingly happy. The whole place has a great atmosphere because of this. Maybe different parts of Doreen are different. My experiences are from Laurimar.

I didn't think Doreen prices were really in the realm of first home buyers. Even Mernda isnt anymore.

Sash
Sash

The nice thing about Doreen is how the people who planned it allowed for a real mix of land sizes and house types. There are quite a few really beautiful town houses for sale in the low and mid 400,000s. There are also a few small cottage type houses on small blocks that are in the high 300,000 and low 400,000. The thing about Doreen is that it doesnt feel cheap. In fact it is quite the opposite and feels very affluent to the point of a person feeling the need to dress up to go to the supermarket (which has good and bad about it). We are all first home buyers at some stage in life. There is obviously nothing wrong with being one. However in Doreen you will want to be an aspirational first home buyer to feel like you fit in. By that I mean you will want to make your house and your front garden look nice and pleasant and not keep a rusty car on your front lawn. You will probably not want to be a bogan because you will be very place if you do.
