Granville, NSW 2142

It's getting better, its safe here day and night, close to Parramatta and Merrylands Mall and Westmead Hospital but you will not see many European people around and I still feel if I buy a Mercedes Benz 200 or 6 cyl or any BMW I will feel out of place and one person painted there front door sky blue then 1 year after painted it white and I feel that way also you can not paint a front door in this suburb a fancy colour you will feel out of place and not normal to this place because its not a wealthy suburb but you will never know in 10 to 15 years it could. I still Class Rate it at 39% where middle class is 50% eg: North West Sydney suburbs and wealthy class is 80% Eg: Mosman suburb and High class is 85% to 100%. Some might not agree with me but if you want to feel rich, well why not go and buy Poodle and a $50,000 or more expensive Mercedes Benz or BMW there is a few around in this area

Got a bad share accommodation in Granville and you will find homeless or drunky here . Not safed for single ladies . Someone homeless always near train station.

I have recently moved to Granville, due affordability for size of property and close proximity to the city.

Cons:
- rubbish everywhere, Cumberland Council don’t have much of a focus on cleanliness, rubbish after bin day all over the suburbia streets, lots of people seem to dump rubbish around parks and streets and storm water overflow drains, no clean up by council
- hot, although not as hot as West West, the suburb definitely heats up in summer
- they have decommissioned the T1 express train, so commute to city stops everywhere, taking a trip from Granville to Circular Quay just under an hour

Pros
- multicultural hub with all cultures living in harmony, friendly neighbours and community members (most of the time)
- new WestConnex takes 16 minutes to drive from Granville to entry of Anzac bridge
- Food, el Jannah and many other great eateries about
- lots of parks and green spaces
- 10 minute drive to Parra

Overall I enjoy living here, with a focus from the council on cleanup of rubbish it would improve immensely, I feel there is a growth of younger professionals moving to the area, as a gay couple we are a little reserved with our relationship in public areas out of respect to majority of community but feel this is more a self conscious decision opposed to receiving hate, but not yet willing to test that theory.

I have been working at LJ Hooker Granville for over 10 years and have been living here for over 5years. Granville has a multi cultural background and have many different types of food. Granville is very convenient only 30 min to the city.

Excellent suburb to live in, rent, work and play

I've lived near Meehan St ( border of Parramatta) for over 18 years, I grew up in this neighbourhood riding bikes and hanging out at my neighbours'. It's a super quiet area with Ollie Web and Jones Park around the corner, a walking distance to Harris Park Train station and to Parramatta Train Station (25 minutes Express to the CBD!) Prices have gone down recently, you can get a unit for like 450k? because of the new apartments going up, but the local community is so diverse, walking distance to bus stops and the shops with a lot of good restuarants to choose from Harris Park, Granville and Church St in Parramatta. I'll be moving away because my family is moving interstate as I start university, but couldn't recommend this quiet nook of Granville anymore

I grew up in Granville. I loved it, everyone looked out for us kids. My Grandparents lived in the same street as us. We had 5 corner stores, a butcher and a shoe maker. It was different to today because progress happens. I loved the pink house on the hill of The Avenue, my mother said it had a ballroom. It was on a double block then, the garden full of roses. Some of the homes in Granville are to die for now, so beautiful. The TAFE College didn't go all the way down to Elizabeth Street as it does now. There was a public park right along in front of the High School in Mary Street but that has gone. I think it would still be a great place to live.

Granville is a family-friendly suburb only 5 minutes away from Parramatta. The train station is easily accessible and has frequent rail services running to the Harbour CBD. The community is diverse and I have a good relationship with my neighbours. I've felt safe in my twenty years here and I think it is a good suburb to raise your kids in with plenty of good schools around.

The area is rapidly changing in line with Greater Sydney's vision and the council's doing a good job at maintaining it. Property prices are slowly creeping up though as it is becoming an increasingly desirable neighbourhood.

Steeped in history, Granville is a lively and multicultural suburb with good eateries and amenities around. It is a well serviced suburb with a local police station and recently built community centre.

While there isn't a wide variety of restaurants (yet), it's a mere 5 min drive to the good quality restaurants and cafes of Parramatta and Auburn. Granville does however have some of the best Lebanese around, and grocery shopping at the local Woolies and nearby Stockland Merrylands (Coles, Aldi) or Guildford IGA are more than sufficient.

Granville is geographically central to everything, so getting around Sydney is easy with good access to the M4 and public transport. It is set to grow further with lots of new developments on the cards.

History First: Actor Paul Hogan grew up in Granville but was not born here. The name Granville comes from and named after - Granville George Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville (11 May 1815 – 31 March 1891), styled Lord Leveson until 1846, was a British Liberal Statesman from the Leveson-Gower Family, Lord Granville owned coal and ironstone mines with 105 Furnaces in England. Irish people in the 1800's used to live in Granville and armed themselves up to fight the British Army at Parramatta NSW which lasted 6 months which the British had to after recruit more soldiers from Orange NSW to Gosford and New Castle NSW because the Irish were putting up a good fight and then the Irish lost the battle at a great loss due to infections and inexperience. Before 1955 Granville had a lot of Flower farms one old man said to me he said it was bloody beautiful. -- I came to Granville from the country 160 miles away 30 years ago but I lived in Sydney for 15 years before I moved to the country so when I moved to Granville in 1987 - 97% of the young people between 18 to 35 years old moved out of Granville by 1985 and the reason for this is they got good jobs and moved to better Sydney suburbs, North Coast, Gold Coast, Melbourne and some proberly went to prison. So even now Granville does not have much young children here from 0 to 19 years old according to the stats at 24000 and its nearly half of Ryde and Baulkham Hills at 41300 children compared to Ryde of 41573 children so your child may but not certain may know less children or have less friends. There is four primary schools in Granville and one mix and one boys high school pretty good for a small suburb. Granville is great in some aspects which is next to the big new Merrylands Stocklands Shopping Centre, Parramatta Westfields and Cinema, Auburn's great eatery suburb, and Guildford's small shopping Centre and Granville has a few medical centres which have very good Doctors. It has a 50 meter long swimming pool and a childrens pool and other small pool in the same centre and this is where actor Paul Hogan meet his wife because they grew up in Granville which is a grave media secret. Granville was a blue collar working class suburb during the 1960's, 1970's 1980's and 1990's with good people and pretty bad people but has improved and changed but not changed dramatically. There is three different Union offices in Granville. There is a certain amount of a nationality group who dominate this suburb of Granville including into Merrylands and Guildford but they are very good as long as you do not make trouble and its a possability you are going to get followed and threatened if you make trouble and yet I have not heard anybody being threatened in this way for a very very long time. You can walk in Granville late at night by yourself and into the early morning and nobody will hurt or follow you. I do not take my car to repair it at any mechanic here anymore because I am not from the same nationality as they are so you will get less quality work and ripped off nor do I get my hair cut here but its alright for woman from other nationalities to get their hair cut here but I do advice them not to take their car to a mechanic here its better to take your car to the bigger popular places. Granville eatery and coffee is not at its best so its better to go to Auburn, Merrylands or Westfield Parramatta. The Train Station has four tracks and has a 2 stop early morning fast train to the City on working days but after 10 AM you will get some trains which travel 10 km/h all the way to Strathfield and its annoying. The bus services are now great and there is even one which goes and comes back from Hurstville from along Blaxcell Street to the Station and people do offer the elderly a seat in Granville. It will take you one hour to drive to Bondi Beach so you better have your car air conditioner in full working condition because there is warm and hot air in summer time and having the windows down will be a full waste of time going to the beach. There is four pubs in Granville which two are on Parramatta Road. The houses are getting expensive in 2017, a unrenovated Fibro 3 bedroom house tile roof with unrenovated outside 7ft ceiling granny flat with carport sold in September 2017 for $850,000 on a good street so if you can not afford in the inner west or eastern suburbs your best bet is buying here in Granville which is next to Parramatta City Central Business District and you can take your children possibly to the private Kings School at Nth Parramatta. Granville has a big Tafe college with big on-site parking and with canteen serving hamburgers but now the Welding Course has been canceled and with other courses you might need to go to Bankstown Tafe which off-street parking is very hard to find at night and day. Demographic Snapshot: Population: 11,266 Dwellings Total:3328 - Born Overseas: 43%. - Religions: Christian 35.9%, Islam 19.3%, Buddhism 5%, Hinduism 8.3%. - Employment Work Force: Managers 6.8%, Technicians/Trades 14.9%, Professionals 17.2%, Com/Personal Services 10.7%, Sales 10%, Labourers 13.8%, Clerical Admin 14.7%, Machinery Op/Drivers 8.1%.- Travel to Work: Car 52.6%, Train 29.7%, Bus 1.8%. - Number of cars per dwelling: No Car 17.6%, One 37.3%, Two/more 33.3%.

I have been living in Granville for 10yrs, and I can tell you granville has improved a lot from past. I strongly recommend for first home buyer, but it may be hard to find good quality house. You might need to some extra money to renovation. People who living in the good quality house, they love to stay in Granville so it's hard to find good quality house.

I bought a house in Granville 2 years ago (end of 2014), and moved in earlier this year. During my years of living in Sydney, I have lived in the Pyrmont and Balmain areas- so this was a big move. I, like most Sydneysiders care about where I live and Granville hadn't exactly been my first pick. Why did I buy here? I took the emotion out of it. Granville is a no brainer from a practicality point of view. It has a great train station with rides into the city taking less than 30minutes. It has good food and is also close to Parramatta (next suburb), the M4 (now being widened), University of Western Sydney (new building in Parramatta) and Westmead Hospital (Major Tertiary Hospital). Land is really cheap compared to the rest of Sydney because of perceptions about the suburb. My neighbours are lovely and I chose a good quiet street. Sure, it isn't in one of the desirable northshore, eastern or inner west suburbs, BUT I actually have a decent house with a significantly lower mortgage and good transport to the city, where I work everyday as a Doctor. Redfern, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Chippendale all have far more unsavoury characters than this suburb and yet are much more expensive. Additionally, the cost of living is significantly less (groceries and services). My property value has grown by 20% (I bought after there had been 30% growth) and I genuinely feel that there is great potential for further growth as people continue to knock down and rebuild their houses. If you recall, the inner west and inner eastern suburbs were all considered as undesirable because of their demographic, but in the end "location, location, location" always wins out. There are reviews with gross stereotyping of the suburb which isn't really a fair representation of the place. I'd encourage all young professionals to consider Granville - because this is your break into the Sydney market in a practical location, particularly for land - it was for me!

I wrote my review back in March 2010, when I was looking to move to the area.
I am writing an updated review now after having lived in Granville for the past year.

My wife and I are both Tertiary Educated working Professionals who travel to Sydney CBD each day, using the excellent transport facilities that are available to us from living in Granville, because of it's junction location within the Western Sydney transport network. Our door-to-door travel time to work is approx. 45 mins (that's similar and at times better than the travel time our friends who live in the lower north shore, eastern suburbs and inner west circle take to get from door-to-door).

We like to think we have a loving and caring family with good values, raising 2 young children who go to Childcare centres local to the area with the eldest child currently attending pre-school at a local public school and hopefully next year will be attending a local catholic school within walking distance to our home.

Our boys attend soccer classes on the weekend at the local Parramatta Club. We regularly use the park facilities available to us and the Granville Pools have great facilities (although an indoor heated pool would have been the cream on top, but we go to the Guildford pools for that).

Auburn tennis courts are only a 5 min drive away and the Woodville Public Golf Course which I should try to go more often is also just a 5 minute drive from where we live (for the record I'm not an avid keen golfer although I use to play, but it's good to know my retirement sport is covered nearby)

El Jannah and Awafi Charcoal chickens - YUM!!!, Also the yummy sweets from 'El Sweetie' on South St and Abla's Pastries and don't forget good ol' SUBWAY, where all these wonderful businesses are within walking distance from the Granville Station. I can also get my hair cut at the Station, and buy coffee on the platform as I wait for my train. :)

Our family also get to enjoy great chinese dinners at the Golden Treasures Seafood Restaurant @ Granville RSL Club, which is within walking distance for us.

Most importantly for our family, we have been very blessed with great neighbours (you never know who you are going to get as neighbours!!!), who have lent me garden tools and offerred a hand when they have seen me working in the backyard. Our other neighbour kindly took down some trees that was encroaching on a shared fence causing it to bend. Most importantly we always warmly greet each other when-ever any members of our families meet.

I write these reviews only to provide perspective.

Granville was once a quaint blue collar working class suburb stepped in history however this changed in the mid to late 80's when many of the surrounding factories closed down - allot of the workers left and a undesirable element slowly crept in snapping up housing stock at bargain prices.

My grandparents grew up in Granville and i lived there from 2008 to 2010 so i have been able to witness the slow decline of the suburb. I have lost count of the number of stabbings, bashing's, street level robberies and shootings that have occurred in the area over the last couple of years. Most seem to be gang related and i don't believe an honest person has anything to fear - that being said, if someone took my car space at the shops, i think i would be keeping my mouth shut. That's essentially the caliber of some of the people who live in Granville.

Granville is predominately populated by people from Middle Eastern Backgrounds with the bulk of the adult population being born overseas. Most of the stores / businesses in the area have their signage in Arabic - expect a lower level of service and sometimes outright rudeness if you don't speak the language. You could be mistaken for being in a different country - Granville is not multicultural, one culture is extremely dominant.

Drive down the main drag - South St and Good St and you will see garbage lining the streets and graffiti sprayed over the walls. Dubious looking teenagers and men congregate out the front of the many Kebab stores. There are two pubs and not much else, nothing that could be considered fine or even decent dining

Drive into the residential streets and they too are littered with garbage along the lines of old mattresses and couches. Many of the houses are run down, the front yards that haven't been concreted are over grown and ugly - you get the overwhelming impression that no one cares, their home is merely a place to sleep.

On the plus side, there are some nice pockets in Granville, namely the area bordered by Railway Pde, Woodville Rd, William St and The Avenue. This area contains many lovely old Victorian and Federation homes, many of which date back to the 1800's and are heritage listed. Nice inner city style terraces and semi's start from 400k - that's why i bought into the area but there were ultimately too many compromises to stay on. Being so close to Parramatta (20 min walk) and Sydney (30 min train ride), Granville is sure to boom one day and it might be an ok place for a cash strapped couple to start out - so long as you keep your blinkers on and ignore what is around you.

I LOVE GRANVILLE! Been Living here for 23 years and im completly satisfied with everything... I would not move from here.. Its a place where you can call home. Its a very convienient LOCATION and is centre Sydney and basically next door to Parramatta.

People need to see past suburban Stigma, and assess properties and areas based on important metrics and assess things based on where an area is headed as opposed to only where it came from.

Take note that Granville is the hub for Western Sydney, it has been identified as part of the regeneration plans for the Parramatta Regional centre, within the "City of Cities" and "Towards 2036" Metropolitan development plans. It is part of the Parramatta District, but the opportunity at the moment is that it doesn't carry the same price premium, which will likely change once all the developments and improvements are complete.

Lets look at some of the key metrics for Granville:

- Transport (Granville is centrally located within Sydney, an Express Train service to the city takes 26mins, Parramatta CBD is less than 5 mins Drive. Granville is a Train and bus hub offerring excellent Transport services, as part of the Western Express Transport proposal from NSW government, travel times will continue to come down)

- Health (Westmead Public and Private Hospitals (Arguably Sydney's premier medical district) and Auburn Hospital 10 mins away)

- Recreation (Parramatta Stadium 8mins, Sydney Olympic Park 10 mins, Bicentenial Park 10mins, Sydney Aquatic Centre 10mins and Granville Pools)

- Childcare and Schools (Plenty of Childcare services are offerred in the Granville area, and there are plenty of public and catholic schools also, plus the central location of the suburb opens parents up with choices for nearby suburbs school facilities also)

- Saftey (Crime occurs everywhere in Sydney, granted some more than others, but check out the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics website www.bocsar.nsw.gov.au and look for the crime stats and figures for Granville Area have dropped significantly in the past few years, and $15million has just been spent on a new Police Station in Granville to clean up the residual scum that has given the area a bad name)

- Employment (Due to it's central nature, growth areas for employment districts around Parramatta and Sydney Olympic park are all within a 10min radius, further due to the availability and proximity of transport services trips to the Sydney CBD is less than a half hour away).

Granville is approximate 5 minutes south east of Parramatta and 40 minutes from the CBD.

The suburb is comprised predominently lower income working class families and young couples. With a few parks spotted around the suburb.

Transport is serviced mainly by trains on the Western line and the trains to the city are frequent and will reach the CBD in 30 minutes or so if you manage to get an express.

Other aspects of the suburb include relatively good child care services as well as having a Woolworths and other small convenience stores.

Safety in the area, particularly around the train station is average and light industry and retail stores surround the station. However, there are some excellent arabic restaurants including one of Sydney's best charcoal chicken take outs if you are looking for a night out.

It is an overall relatively safe area, but if you are looking for a trim leafy suburb, this wouldn't be your cup of tea.

In terms of capital growth, the suburb has remained very steady and is one of Sydney few that have remained relatively stagnant throughout the last 5 to 10 years. However this being so, there is a lot of potential for growth.

Granville in just near Guildford, so same things are shared in these two areas-every thing is average and there are no especial things!

Granville has been described by many as the best value suburb to live in within the Sydney metropolitan area. This does not come as a surprise at all. Granville has a very well connected train station that often boasts express trains. As such, you can easily get to work in the city within thirty minutes during peak hours. Driving however, is not such a good option during peak hours as the traffic on Parramatta Road can be a nightmare. It used to take me an hour and a half to get into the city from Granville during peak hour when the journey normally takes half that time.

Due to its affordable house pricee, TAFE, police station and schools around the area, many young families choose to reside in Granville. It is a very multi-cultural suburb with plenty of different cuisines on offer along its main street - South Street. However, it is the famous El-Jannah Charcoal Chicken and Abla's Pastry that have put Granville on the map. People from around Sydney will come to Granville and queue up for the famous charcoal chicken.

I have friends who live here and they have varying remarks about this place. Some feel that this is the best place to live in and others do not feel safe walking by themselves along South Street at night. Either way, it is still a convenient and affordable suburb to live in.
