salt-air and flooding

Have heard that buying a property on the water front ends up expensive due to the salt air being very corrosive, and things like home airconditioners, tap-ware etc need replacing every 2 to 3 years. What can the locals advise, and also is it a flood area?
Comments would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers sheree.

Hi Shar,

I work in a beachside suburb and I can tell you that it is true.
Corrosion due to salt spray and breeze is a common occurrence, Air conditioning units, aluminium window frames, pool fences etc.
However I must say, the people i deal with that can afford to live on the beach front or water front do not care about the maintenance.
I might be stating the obvious here but you need a lot of money to purchase water front property and people that can afford them can afford the maintenance!

Just on that... when you say waterfront and salt air it is important to point out that you are talking about the beach. Homes on waterfront canals do not have these problems. We have been on the waterfront in Monterey Keys for 9 years. No rust, no taps replaced, nothing coroded. This area does not flood. We have had heavy rains during this time and it has not effected us at all. It is not a low lying area and the actual Monterey Keys waterway is protected by a lock system. It is non-tidal. Because of the water is not effected by the tides we also do not experience Mosquitos.
