"Ashby House" was owned and occupied by one of Queensland's pioneers, farmer, businessman and politician George Grimes, a member of the renowned Grimes family who contributed significantly to the development of colonial Queensland. Grimes settled in Fairfield in the 1850s and is credited with the naming of the suburb, as well as its growth in the nineteenth century as an agricultural region.
