Is Melbourne as dangerous as the media is pretending it to be?

I've been noticing a huge trend in the media lately that Melbourne is a very dangerous place to be especially late on a Saturday night in the Melbourne CBD. I've been going out in Melbourne my whole life. I've been to all the supposed "dangerous strips" such as Fitzroy Street in St Kilda, King Street in the city and around Flinders Street Station and I have to say I don't find it any more dangerous now.

I read today in the Herald Sun that our trains are more dangerous the subways in New York or London!

I think there is some degree of sensationalism here, sure we have incidents but as you say most people are directly involved in altercations, drunkeness or worse and the fight is a direct result.

Must say though we need more police out and about. I guess they can't be everywhere.

@donnyresident what? Our trains are more dangerous that subways of NY or London? I find that VERY hard to believe.

It's funny though, without fail, every Sunday night the news are reporting on some poor who has had his head kicked in by some bouncer. It's pretty obvious the problem is alcohol. But I don't know what the police\government can do about it. The 2am lockout was a huge failure.

Perhaps some advertising campaigns like the drink and drive ones showing how a single punch to the head can kill someone? That has always been in the back of my head, how I can hit someone, they fall, hit their head on the concrete and then they die. Jail for you!! Not worth it.

The media is definitely hyping it all up, that's not to say there aren't idiots out there but there's alot of good people too.

And there are plenty of other places to go that do not have such a bad reputation as King St. Avoid the idiots and choose somewhere else!

I've lived in St Kilda for 16 years. I wouldn't say it's particularly dangerous (there have been 2 murders in the last decade or so I believe, one occurred this year). Most people think of thieves, prostitutes and druggies, but I've never had any trouble with them.

By far main issue in St Kilda is drunks and yobbos (or a combination of the 2). If you live near a main road do not be surprised if you find beer bottles in your garden and people urinating on your fence. Extremely loud verbal shouting matches is the norm on Friday nights and weekends.

St Kilda is especially known for that, but I agree only on the main areas surrounding Acklin Street or Fitzroy Street. That being said though, I firmly believe our beautiful city is one of the safest no matter what suburb you live in.

Hi, I have lived in the CBD and I never felt afraid or threatened, I lived in an apartment complex with restaurants and bars below and it was a very neighbourly community. Loved it!

Adam S get over yourself

if it's dangerous then it is

the media has no need to trump up danger unless it's the truth. That's why its called the news.
