What are safe & affordable suburbs on the East side of Melbourne?

I planning to move to Melbourne in the near future and would prefer the east side. My budget is under $400,000 (2 bedroom apartment, townhouse, villa or house with secure parking). I would prefer a somewhere safe and with good access to public transport (no more than 1hr to city by train). I have heard Dandenong and Frankston have a bad reputation but are there any other suburbs to avoid?

Hi Eloise, thanks for your enquiry. Looking at your budget I'm afraid in the East Side you'd be looking at a 1bed instead and possibly without a car park. In all honesty, Dandenong and Frankston might not have good names but it's worth inspecting the property yourself. That way you can have a better understanding at the neighbourhood. I don't know these areas well enough however a friend has bought in Dandenong and was terribly surprised at how nice her neighbours are. I hope this helps.
