Is it really dangerous?

Just dont hang out in the dark or asscicate with bad people and should be ok anything can happen here but bad things can happen anywhere dont flex wealth stick to your self and should be fine

I would not pay that much attention to those reviews, as they are all relative and questionable - just look for instance at reviews of Wiley Park, Lakemba or Mortdale. Are those suburbs really that good as they rate them? :-) If you look into crime statistics most criminal suburb in NSW is Sydney City. Assaults, robbery, drug offences, damage to property around Sydney CBD area are twice as high as in Liverpool area. We recently moved to Merrylands, and before we did so similar to you we had doubts because of those reviews. But all good, it's safe, we didn't have any issues so far. I like it here and happy we made a right choice. Merrylands is a nice suburb and with that many new modern developments it will get even better soon.
