I understand. You probably want to be able to sell your home one day. But people need to know the truth because odours, especially those as serious as this impacts on liveability.

Oh seriously - you must have the nose of Superman - I rarely smell anything and if I did could it possibly be the smell from the market garden fertilizers nearby?

It smells horrible of the oil refinery from Altona North I presume and the water plant in Werribee. So many times of day and night it comes across do suddenly and the smell leaches through any small space under doors etc.. Makes me feel sick. I moved here to get away from Altona North after living opposite the refinery.

No, it smells like exactly what it is. faeces , ( poo) as Werribee treatment facility staff are releasing the methane gas of an evening. They have to. It's Melbourne's largest facility, you can even see the thing from Google earth, and if you don't like it, buy elsewhere. The facility was and always will be there, and was there before it became cheap estate's.

Well for the first time in 3 yrs living in Pt. Cook I actually experienced the stank in my bedroom last night. Silly me I left my front windows open. It was definitely is a gassy odour. Not feeling the greatest still nauseous headache. Isn't it funny how other countries like Singapore don't seem to have these issues with recycling waste. If you are choosing to stay in the West Inspect your area all different hours of the day. Spell tests.

You see Jacob, most people are too afraid to sleep with their windows open in Point Cook due to home invasions anyway, however just as you did recently, you then realise that stank, like a eggy-pooey gas smell creeps into your home, and onto your washing should you leave a window open or your clothes out on the line overnight. The residents who are denying this smell exists are desperately trying to get the best price for their homes or are investors wanting to lease properties . When I first met my ex partner, he arrived in Sydney, and unfortunately, the clothes he brought with him smelled like this gas. Not a great first impression I must say. If you plan to stay in Point Cook, air fresheners, essential oil sprinkling on beds and carpets, a clothes dryer with fragrance softening sheets and keeping windows closed after dark is an absolute must.

Many residents of point cook smoke cigarettes, they are chain smokers its at least every other house. They like to smoke in front of houses.

melinda-cookm

Um, the smell is definitely not cigarettes or fires unfortunately. It's the gas being released of an evening from the nearby treatment facility.

I've never smelt anything bad, I have no idea why people are saying they have?

Some of you who are being dishonest, and falsely telling others Point Cook and Werribee doesn't smell should probably re- think their responses, because it's simple enough for people to google for themselves. https://www.heraldsun.com.au/leader/north-west/cause-of-stench-across-melbournes-western-suburbs-remains-a-mystery/news-story/c9c2f4b1718c67d05af0d8ee0f536dbc

I've never found it problematic personally. I find that I do catch unpleasant whiffs on the wind at times, but these are infrequent and transient occurrances, and I find it's the same in all of the western/south-western suburbs.

I did live in Brunswick for a time, and the air there I think was slightly fresher, but then in that circumstance I was also situated close to numerous parks, so that may have been a placebo affect from being in proximity to a lot of fresh greenery. Naturally I'm not walking around with tools to measure the air, so it's very much playing off memory.

The majority of my life though I've lived somewhere from Werribee to Sunshine, and I find the air to be the same throughout that entire distance, which is to say perfectly fine. I don't care for beach smell though, so I make a point not to live near the water.

Certainly, it's better than the air in Melbourne city. I work in the CBD, and it's very pungent.

That being said though, smell is a hard thing to judge because it's a very subjective experience. People have different levels of sensitivity to odour - the air is safe to breathe and that's what really matters. If you're concerned about odours on the wind though, I'd just take a drive through the area and judge for yourself.

If you haven't already, that is. I don't see any dates on these posts so I have no idea how old this question is.

Its pretty slummy. The people smoke in the front of houses so if you have windows open it stinks if cigarettes.

Definitely not fires or cigarettes, it's a faecal/rotten egg gas smell, being released from the nearby sewage treatment facility in Werribee. The rain seems to make it worse, due to the gas/odor molecules being trapped in rain/water molecules, then evaporating the next day following the rain. The gas must go somewhere unfortunately. Hence the land value is cheap. Most of it is built on swamp, that's been filled in. E Sink and stink holes are common.

what smell? what are you talking about, unless you are talking about sanctuary lakes during hot weather it might smell a bit due to the algae built up in the lake and sea grasses. don't know which part of point cook you are in, but in general , I have been living more than ten years in point cook you can't smell anything but fresh air.

Sewer gas is a complex mixture of multiple gasses and compounds, some of which are toxic after prolonged , (chronic) exposure.
Can even ruin your sense of smell, whereby you no longer smell it.

"The primary components of sewer gas include:

hydrogen sulfide
methane
ammonia
carbon dioxide"

(Health line 2021)

While sewer gas isnt dangerous in small amounts, these compounds contribute to sewer gas toxicity at high levels.

The only people on here who say Point Cook doesn't stink are residents who are trying to sell, or real-estate agents in the Point Cook area.
It reeks because the gas from the Werribee treatment facility builds up and needs to be released, hence they select the time they do to let it go.

EPA are being paid off, have known for decades that the cause is industrial gas being released at certain times of the evening.
If u need to move to Point Cook, use a clothes dryer, don't hang washing on your outside line unless you want to go to work smelling vaguely of flatulence.

Manor Lakes is terrible, at least 4 to 5 times a week for a few hours smells like sewerage. Leave the windows open and it doesn't escape. Put air con on and thats all you smell. Its nauseating. Any other suburb would have to be better than Manor Lakes.

This is Victoria's toilet bowl, not food bowl, and the treatment facility was there long before people began buying cheap home and land packages. If you are planning to purchase property in Point Cook, going there after 9pm is a must, because this is when the treatment facility starts releasing the methane gas. They have to, releasing the gas is a must. There's no real solution to this odious problem foreseeable in the near future. Unfortunately. Buyer beware I'm afraid.

We’ve lived here for 18 years and the air quality here is wonderful. Point Cook is a beautiful coastal/ country suburb with a fantastic community. Most people are cultured and very kind and friendly with a strong focus on family and the environment. We are surrounded by trees and we’re blessed with wonderful sea breezes from Point Cook Beach, Altona Bay and Werribee South to the point where we rarely have to use our air conditioning. We live in a beautiful clean , treed location in fact of which there are many in Point Cook and we’re blessed to live so close to Werribee South, one of Australia’s biggest food bowls. Council and community groups regularly plant trees for shade and shrubs for wildlife. Possibly previous negative entries are designed to devalue the area I’m unsure why really as I have a keen sense of smell and while sometimes no matter where you live there are some smells we certainly have not noticed the level of odour that a couple of other people here have posted. We’ve lived across Melbourne and there is pollution everywhere across Victoria, Australia etc and internationally… we have great air quality here and should be grateful. In our experience we feel it’s quite a beautiful place to live and very quiet at night too. We feel very comfortable, happy and safe living here. We are extremely fortunate to live here with so many amenities where we’re very well connected and central to most places with a pristine natural environment on our doorstep.

As in somewhere near the Alamanda's Pirate ship Bayview park?

melinda-cookm

It's around the time they release the gas from the treatment facility. Needs to be darkish or else it might be too obvious, and if they don't release it before midnight then it may linger around until the following morning. They do however release at different (later) times in certain circumstances, eg, large outdoor evenings ,events, festivals etc nearby. Look, at the end of the day the treatment facility and it's dedicated staff were there long before cheap surrounding land and estates. If smelling this odour on your clothes ( I even smelled it in my friends hair when she came to visit us after we left, eeeeek, or in the air, then buy elsewhere. Melbourne's sewage needs to go somewhere, right? Might as well be there .
