I don't know about incrediably high? my rates on another island on a 600m2 block with home, is $665 per quarter, that includes water rates. It's all relative, rates to me are like insurance and taxes, you just have to suck it up and pay them OR move somewhere else, pay less and not be as happy?
Included in the figure are all below:
Water and wastewater charges
State government charges and subsidies $145.11
Redland City Council charges:
General Rates Cat 1a Min
Rural Fire Brigade Special Charge
Environment Charge
Landfill Remediation Charge
Redland city SES Admin. Charge
also
State Govt. Charges and rebates:
Emergency Manag. Levy - Class E Group 2 - $27.65
ALSO, you may not know, but car rego for island residents, for an island car, is at 50% the cost of rego on the mainland.
Rules to get 50% discount: you have to be a resident. You also have to get permission from the Transport Dept. to take your island car off the island, for repairs etc, usually for no more than a week, I believe, will be allowed, you have to carry that approval certificate with you whilst on the mainland, I believe this also applies if you are taking it to one of the other islands also. So if you are not prepared to take public transport, available from the ferry terminal at Redland Bay, then you will need to have a second car on the mainland, at 100% rego, parking there is a bit of a nightmare, there is some secure parking at the terminal, but a long waiting list to get one, quite expensive also, but there has been quite a lot of vandalism or stealing of vehicles from not secure spots at the ferry terminal. Also some private parking in people's yards close to the terminal is available, but once again, I view as an expensive way to go. I take public transport as many people do, GoCards are easy, just tap and go, best to have them set up with Translink to have an immediate top up from your credit or debit card, can do this on their site.
Insurance: If you don't drive your island car much and only keep it on the island, keeping in mind that it must be housed or locked up in a secure yard of course, you can then get cheaper car insurance
Vehicular Ferries: expensive, as I rarely use, I think about $120 return, a motorbike would be the way to go then as cheaper, but I am not aware of the rules surrounding taking motorbike's off the islands, contact Dept. of Transport and Main Roads for all rules. Hope all this info is of some help

Very high for what you get. It is costing me $2K per year for a vacant block with unsealed access roads.

I have a cleared block on Russell and the rates are double what I pay for a house on the Sydney North Shore. It is becoming worse and I see no reason for such high rates for a block that just sits there and does nothing.
