Best schools in Sydney

With the success of the best schools in Melbourne discussion it's time we get something moving in Sydney.

So, what is the best private and public school in Sydney?

From what I can see it has to be Sydney Grammar for private.

Academically - it's James Ruse (however it is the selective high school for selective high schools, i.e. top 1% of smartest children get into that school)

I worked in the State school system for many years and I believe that the State schools in NSW are among the best anywhere. The standard of education in our NSW State school system is second to none and the dedication of so many of our State school teachers and administrative staff (in State schools) is absolutely fantastic. State schools have received a lot of flack but I can assure parents that they consistently attain the State's highest academic achievements (mostly via selective high schools or GPS schools). However, a hard working, responsible student from a good supporting family will achieve good results from ANY reputable State high school in NSW. My son and daughter both went to selective high schools but I would have been very happy for them to attend ordinary State high schools, eg Kirrawee High School which has an outstanding reputation (as do many local State high schools). What I love about State High Schools is that ALL students (from all cultures, backgrounds, different religions and cultures) are welcome and given the benefits of learning in an egalitarian, multicultural environment WITHOUT the anachronistic elitism associated with some private schools (many of which do NOT perform well despite propoganda)!

For some years the highest ranked non-selective state school Cherrybrook Technology High School has been in very high demand. It drives both sales and rental demand inside its catchment based in the increased increased criteria the school h e placed on admissions from our of area students. A huge school also, it ranks among the highest in number of students across the state also. So, not only is cherrybrook a great place to live, it's schooling is as good as you could expect.

Cherrybrook Technology High School has been in very high demand and the administration seems to be under intense pressure to segregate genuine applications from the fraud applications resulting in a very unwelcome experience in the office for the Parents applying for the admission.
Is it fair for the Parent to get a feeling of not being welcome in the school, definitely not.
The administration is looking at every application as a fraud application, the onus is on the Government to have a better spread of these kind of schools so that the people don't have to go to specific locations in the hunt of a better school. So the school administration has to realise that the Parents are not to blame here please get this theory right.

Thanks for your comment "SiddarthP". I read your comment as being, both disappointing but also assuring. Why both? I see your point of disappointment from intense pressure you might have received, but am also thankful that the school do take seriously the important role of checking the legitimacy of each application, as being in line with their enrolment policy and within the catchment. As a local estate agent in the suburb, I can certainly attest to the premium that is attached to a property (sale or rental) within the catchment vs those outside. So from where I sit I am assured by the schools adherence to this admissions process. I personally, am confident in the Principal & Board of the school to fairly conduct this process, and would encourage you to share your experience with them as I am sure they would welcome it.
I also agree with your position on the ultimate responsibility being that of the Government, as the north west of Sydney has a number of selective state schools amongst the high performing state schools, so admissions will be a hot topic for some time yet I suspect.

James Ruse is certainly a great school but its academic results largely reflect the competitive selection process which produces its student population.
Our family lives an hour's drive away from the nearest selective school, so our kids attend our local high school where a significant proportion of students leave school before Yr 12 to take up apprenticeships. The head teachers of Maths & English have previously taught at James Ruse & can provide excellent academic support to bright students. As a result, my son scored 98 in the HSC Maths exam last year in Yr 9 & is doing very well in the Maths Olympiad programs amongst selective & private school students. He is also state level at several sports. His older sister got offers from all her first choice med schools in every state (so there wasn't a med school she failed to get into). Therefore, for our family, no school could be better than our local school.
