We want a home near the Sydney Ice Rink for our son, but my husband will be working in North Sydney...how long will the commute be to Castle Hill?

Hi Hockeymom,

Wishing you all the best with your relocation. Having moved from the US East Coast to Sydney myself, I completely understand how you feel doing all your research.

The commute from Castle Hill to North Sydney, depends on where in Castle Hill, and the time of day. However many Castle Hill residents commute to North Sydney and beyond. There is only very limited public transport from Castle Hill, however if your husband is happy to drive, providing you are in the right part of Castle Hill it is possible to make the drive in less than 45mins. Again depending on the Route, I am a property consultant and assist many families relocating from Overseas or Interstate feel free to contact me if I can help. www.myrpc.com.au

Wow, I guess you don't like realtors! We have had awful problems here. Our home has dropped so low it makes me nauseous. We are trying to sell and decide how much $$ we are comfortable losing....OUCH! Here it wasn't just realtors, but many people....bankers...appraisers...insurance companies.....government property appraisers (so they can raise tax revenue).... all financed by our hard work. ): Sydney's home prices are so high....wow! It is a lovely place though and the people are all so nice. We are really looking forward to arriving!

Try Googling "Sydney Ice Arena" in Baulkham Hills. I think that area is nearest Castle HIll? Good luck moving to Sydney. The Hills area is cheaper and the houses are MacMansions. Not a very good bus service though.

Hi Hockeymom,

There are 2 ice rinks close to Castle hill, one is at Bella Vista, Baulkham Hills, the other is at North Ryde.

The type of home will depend on the $$$ you end up with and what you are comfortable is spending, however you can get a nice home near these ice rinks and still be commutable for your husband to North Sydney... without having to spend as much as you may fear.

Consider the area of Cherrybrook, South Dural, Pennant Hills... If I can offer you any assistance please feel free to contact me. All the Best Denise

Hockeymom,

Alternatively there is a ice rink at the Liverpool Catholic Club (near Prestons). Prices are much cheaper out in Western Sydney, and your husband should be able to get to North Sydney from just about anywhere near a train station. You can see the CityRail network map at http://www.cityrail.info/stations/network_map and from there view timetables as well.

(I currently live out in Western Sydney and also commute).

I hope that this helps you.

Stay out of the Western Suburbs - it is cheap for a good reason

If you husband works on the North Shore (which is the elite side of Sydney) he would not want to commute to the western suburbs. Sydney is very spread out and we have overcrowded trains and the roads are clogged with cars. I think it is best to stick close to work area if you can afford to. The western suburbs have higher crime, and are not as desirable to live there. If you move from Florida to Sydney try to get a place in the better suburbs. There are lots of good beaches in the northern suburbs. The western suburbs also are hotter in summer and cooler in winter than other parts of Sydney. I have lived in Sydney 53 years and I would not live in the west.

Hi Hockeymom,

Don't let the previous comments scare you. I have lived in Sydney for more than 60 years. I have lived in the south, north, east and west. I now live in the West and have been here for more than 12 years. The level of crime in the west is not higher. While living in the northern and eastern suburbs I experienced 3-4 attempted break-ins, close neighbourhood murders, bodies in car boots, etc. While living in the western suburbs, I have had no attempted break-ins. There has been crime, but I believe it is evenly spread Sydney-wide pro-rata propulation.

If you buy a house in the western suburbs it will cost you about 1/4 the cost of a home in the eastern suburbs, and approximately half what it costs in the northern suburbs. The roads and facilities are better due to planning. Shopping is great.

Castle Hill is not a good place to live if your hubbie commutes to North Sydney because of the poor public transport system. I would be looking at somewhere closer to where he works.

Here's a link that enables you to compare suburb to suburb or region to region crime statistics. It relies on the "facts", not "opinion". http://bocd.lawlink.nsw.gov.au/bocd/cmd/crimetrends/Init

Why has nobody suggested Macquarie Ice Rink (www.macquarieicerink.com.au) to the lady?

Having covered Sydneys west and south west for work over many years, but always having lived around Sydneys North Shore - I can attest to there being a huge difference in socio-economic demographics in the vast majority of case.

I market real estate in Normanhurst on the border between the North Shore and Hills districts and believe it has great positioning at the top of the north shore, whilst still retaining good value for money. Middle to high income professionals and young family dominate.

Hi MGill,

I have stated both Castle Hill and North Ryde... As the initial question was regarding Castle Hill..

I agree, Normanhurst is a good position and affordable. I have also been marketing residential real estate, over the past 9 years primarily in Beecroft Cheltennham.

Hockeymom, how is the move coming along? having moved to Sydney from the East Coast of the USA, I know what is involved.
