Sydney suburb that is both convenient, accessible and lively, yet safe and family-friendly?

We're a young family of 3 planning on moving to Sydney, from Toronto, Canada. We like the convenient, vibrant and sophisticated living of downtown, but we do have a child, so safety, good public schools and a truly family-friendly environment are a must.
