Castle Hill

"Expensive and bland. Possibly the most overrated suburb in all of Australia."

When people from outside Castle Hill meet residents of the area, suburb champions almost always immediately point out; 'You can get to the city in 30 minutes by bus!' and 'There is a train station being built!!'. The need to justify living here when presented with the rest of Sydney as a better option burns deep within them and the best reason they can come up with is that a mythical 30 min bus corridor to the city exists. The trouble is; anyone who has ever driven on a Sydney road knows this is a flat out lie (it's 33km from Castle Hill to Martin Place on one of Sydneys busiest roads) and while a train station is indeed being built it's about 20 years too late. It's also a strange selling point that in half an hour you can be somewhere better.

Castle Hill is a victim of it's own weird popularity. It's median house price is as high some of Sydneys "better" suburbs yet it offers almost none of the amenity. No sparkling beaches, no vibrant pubs or café scene, still no railway station. It is not close to anything. It is defined by it's very beigeness and is populated largely by conservative penecostals, people who wear cargo shorts, those who enjoy sitting in traffic on Pennant Hills Road and a legion of space cadets who firmly believe a 30 minute bus to the city is ready to rock up any minute now.

If you are a fan of early 2000s Jim Masterton McMansion architecture, consider a visit to a shopping mall an inspiring cultural activity, hate the beach, love traffic and dream about 30 minute bus rides; Castle Hill is the place for you. If you value anything else your money would be better spent at just about any other location in Sydney.
