South Hedland

"Money isn't everything"

We spent seven year living in a variety of locations in South Hedland. Overall as a working professional if you are spending most days in the office and only coming home to eat and sleep it's fine. There are more and more new and refurbished places that are increasing the standard of living in the suburb and its aesthetic appeal. That said, as soon as we started our family we knew it was time to leave Hedland. There are no clean safe parks in the area. Roaming dogs makes it unsafe to walk the footpaths. The broken glass everywhere is a nightmare and don't even get me starting on the illegal rubbish dumping and syringes around the place. The shopping centre has all the basics and food/takeaway options have substantially improved in the last few year. The town does have great facilities like the swimming pool, gym and the wonderful Well Women's Centre. If you can get yourself into a comfortable company provided house with bills subsidised and a good wage then it's a great place to live to help reach financial goals. The people are friendly and we made some friends for life but it's certainly not a forever place and I wouldn't want to raise my family there.
