Tenterfield

"Why the cover ups?"

I cant help but get a little paranoid that someone is trying to cover up how terrible this town really is. My last review of Tenterfield was very honest, I even corrected prior negative remarks on the 'teenage pregnancy epidemic'. So Im going to say this another way and this time Im not going to be as nice...In Tenterfield you have The Haves and The Have nots...Racism is rife and please tell me what type of people think its ok to refer to some parts of the town as 'vegemite village'?? The police here do a wonderful job,but the amount of break ins is very high and the teens can get rowdy and intimidating. Before considering buying a property here I would strongly irge you to rent first to see if this town is what you are after..We didnt and we ended up losing quite a lot of money because of it. Other reviews have also been removed and in now way were they offensive,

Great for

  • Good retirment place
  • Getting out

Not great for

  • Nodecent education
  • Glassing

I commented on your other review but apparently it has been blocked?!
What i basically said in my comment was there are heaps of young teens dont believe me go see for urself go into crazy clarks and you will find two on the checkouts or even go to the royal you will find one who recently had a baby etc i could go on.
Didnt see the glassing how about reading it on the news http://www.farnorthcoaster.com.au/news/9849/woman-charged-over-alleged-glassing-incident-at-tenterfield/
Didnt see any rock throwing wait untill spring hits and it warms up and near the post office on the corner where they sit on a friday saturday night then maybe u will be lucky enough to experience it urself.
I do agree with you about the cobblers owner being open minded and non judgemental

I have lived here in Tenterfield for most of my life, i moved away for a few years and then came back when i had my son and then proceeded to buy my first home. Tenterfield does have its issues but honestly what place on earth doesnt, Tenterfield had a great community pride, and certain groups try their best to work with the community to 'better' the quality of life for youth and teens, i myself have had issues with some 'less decent people' and had my house/car broken into. To judge this town because some 'locals' decide to do the wrong thing is just ridiculous. That so called 'glassing' i can assure you was nothing of the sort. Blown out by the media and drama queens who like to over dramatize everything just so they can get some attention. Tenterfield will always be my home and i will always hold it close to my heart. High School Education here is beyond a joke as the teachers have all but lost their love for the job, but i grew up around amazing people, not scared to walk home at night, never became a drug addict/dealer, and have found love and respect for this community.

I agree peoni. There is a massive cover up. The real estate agents with vested interests monitor these pages so that the truth remains obscured. Tenterfield is an aesthetically beautiful yet horribly ugly place to live. People who'd leave in a heartbeat if their place would just sell. Extremely slow market, if you're locked in it can take 10+ years to get out. Nowhere in Australia has issues like Tenterfield does. But that's another post...

Has it improved since these comments 2 years ago?

Haha nooooo way... places don't magically change, and in two years??!! Places like that get worse with time, not better, They cling to the vestiges of yester-century, territorial and ex-clusive. Place is run by the graziers and the cattle farmers, which are owned by the Chinese. They don't want ANY upset to the Order. But you can try it for yourself. You'll do your money, though. Drake, Liston, Tenterfield... start asking around, you'll get your stories. Pedophiles living in caves, people 'disappearing'... later discovered down the thousands of mine shafts, you have to understand the 'Wolf Creek' mentality... adapted for village life. They do NOT want new people in the town. These people are 'fake' country folk. It's not a good place.

Wow, well after reading the above, Tenterfield is out for me, shame as it got such history and when Ive been there in the past it seemed very nice.

You could look at Stanthorpe...on the Qld border, good council, creative cafes and quality food restaurants, quality arts and music scene, good schools, accessible police station, more interesting businesses and none of that 'climbing over the top of each other' silliness... ask around... take the time to do your due diligence, you'll start to hear the stories. Look into their settlement past, the sieges and mass murders of indigenous folks. There are people who pride themselves on never having gone outside of the Tenterfield Shire boundary in their entire 60/70 years of life. When moving to a new place, everyone, in some form looks forward to conforming to the quo to be able to get along. The quaintness you see is a thin veneer. It's a false representation of the truth... carefully obscured by the charm.

Terry, no.
You could move here and be part of the positive change.
But I moved here earlier this year and regret it.
I grew up in and love country towns, but tenterfield is not a place I'm fond of in even the slightest
