South Hedland

"Think very hard before you move to South Hedland"

We moved her over a year ago and it's safe to say I can't wait to get out of here. The anti-social behaviour is terrible and it seems like there is nothing that can be done to stop it, crime is bad and it's everywhere. If you do decide to move to South Hedland be extremely cautious of what street you live in, do not leave anything you don't want stolen in visible view, most homes have high fences and having a good guard dog(s) will help. The rent is pretty expensive for what you get so make sure your company will pay rent/electricty assistance, electricity prices are extortionate averaging around $800+ per every two months, it does reduce slightly in the colder months. It is extremely hard to get a childcare place, usually you are waiting a year for a place to become available. Contents/car insurance is very high also. If you can afford to live in Port Hedland that would be a much safer option. Coles, Kmart and Woolwoths are pretty good they stock a good range of stock/produce and the prices are the same as Perth. There are also meat and fish vans that come round weekly on dreamers corner. Eating out is not too bad there are some good places to eat that are reasonably priced. The swimming pools are great, cheap and a good place to cool down. People are generally very friendly and will offer great advice on what to do and what not to do in the town. Also, alcohol can't be bought on Sundays, you will find that the police will stop the selling of alcohol on occasion, especially if there has been a hard night of alcohol fueled anti-social behaviour. Most people leave town when their children reach high school age to avoid sending them there, I hear the primary schools are pretty good. Some people seem to love it here but for me, it's not the standard of living I want for my family. I don't feel safe here and I hate having to live behind 6ft fences. I will be out of here as soon as I can.
