Reservoir

"Has ended up being a great move"

We moved to the south-western part of Reservoir 4 years ago after living 10 years in Richmond. It was a big transition, but we wanted a sizeable, solid old home with a decent backyard for our 2 small children and were priced out of the closer suburbs.
Thank goodness we ended up here, we've ended up loving it. Quiet streets, fantastic primary schools with great communities, lovely parks close by, lots of diversity in ages and backgrounds which we feel makes for a really good community for kids to grow up in, lovely neighbours - the type that bring your bins in and have street parties with, people say hi when out walking - pretty much what I wanted in a place for the long term.
My husband works in the city and it's a great ride in, alternatively we have train station 5 minute walk one way (with reliable, incredibly regular services), and tram 5 minute walk the other! I travel a bit for work, it's around 20 minutes to the airport and easy to get on the freeway and ring roads to get anywhere in Melbourne quickly. Preston Market is a gem for fresh produce and a lively market scene. Northland shopping centre is not bad, handy to pop in to with the main stores and some of the decent high end chain stores. There's some truly great cafes and interesting small businesses popping up as well as old school bakeries, deli's and ethnic produce stores. Not much of a nightlife, but chilled bars and great restaurants are only 10 minutes down the road for date night.
That said, there is an area of Reservoir (it's a huge suburb, the biggest in Melbourne and can take 20 mins to get from one side to the other) that I definitely wouldn't want to live in and never need to go to, but apart from that corner, in speaking to friends and being out and about the rest is really great. We've never had safety issues thankfully, don't have an alarm, nor the dogs mentioned below and feel comfortable walking and exercising at any time of day.
Pretty excited to see how it keeps evolving!

please, what areas in reservoir should I avoid?

The parts around Regent station, Oakhill, Edwardes Lake and further North on the Western side are really nice. The North-Eastern parts used to be less great, but now more families are moving in, it's changed a lot and is now really nice so you kind of have to see it for yourself, not listen to old hearsay. There's still a couple of streets that I'd avoid, it's well worth driving around and getting a feel for it, the dodgy streets are pretty obvious and honestly everywhere else is pretty great. It's all relative though!
