Werribee

"MUCH better than what people make it out to be"

I moved to Werribee 8 years ago after living in Clayton all my life. It is the best thing I have ever done in my life.
Growing up, I used to hear stories about the 'dreaded' western suburbs and that they were all best avoided. I used to believe Werribee stunk because of the sewage farm. I used to think it was a little bogan town.
But 10 years ago I visited Werribee for the first time when I took my kids to the zoo. We spent the day in Werribee... and we loved it. All those stereotypes about this amazing town were quickly thrown out the window. So, a couple of years later my wife and I bought a home here and we haven't looked back!!
Werribee is a huge town with a huge population. There is absolutely NO noticeable smell of sewage so I don't know how that stereotype came to be.
There's so much on offer in Werribee. The shopping is brilliant. The local Werribee Plaza has over 230 stores (inside and outside the complex), and then you have Watton St in Werribee CBD with plenty of cafes/restaurants/bars, and some of these overlook the beautiful Werribee River which is getting a facelift. Wyndham City Council has plans to make Werribee a capital city for the west, so they are improving its physical image to cater for that.
You also have the Werribee South Beach, and the Werribee Open Range Zoo (one of the best zoos in Australia), Werribee Mansion, and the State Rose Garden. All of these are beautiful and fun filled activities.
Werribee is safe. I've never felt unsafe and I don't know anybody who has. Never seen any trouble, so I don't understand why people call it unsafe. There's plenty of nice parks and gardens for my kids to play in, and facilities like the Wyndham Leisure Centre for my older kids. There's a local outdoor swimming pool at the end of Watton St.

Living in Werribee is cheap! It's one of the cheapest suburbs in Melbourne and is very popular for young families, retirees and singles. One of the best things about Werribee is that it's so close to both Melbourne and Geelong (30 mins to either city). Then you have the Great Ocean Road only a short drive from there.
Locals in Werribee are friendly. It's so easy to bump into someone you know in the street and have a chat with them. A lot of the older residents are happy to chat with anyone!
Public transport is pretty good. Trains run every 10-20 minutes during peak hour. It's quite well serviced by buses, but could be a little better.
There are heaps of good schools around. My older kids are enrolled in Mackillop and are doing really well. My younger kids are still at kindergarten and have made lots of friends. Education here is very good!

I could really go on about how brilliant Werribee really is, but I don't want this message to be too long. It's really better than what people say it is. Life here is easy, laid back, cheap, friendly, safe, everything you could want from a mini city.

Its crazy, Im in my 60s, and Werribee use to be a happy place, and now you cant walk around after 7 oclock at night," one resident told A Current Affair.

"You just try and lock your place up, have some dogs, have a bat by your door. Sounds crazy doesnt it, but you have to do it."

If you actually read the crime stats you will find Wyndham City (Werribee) has one of the lower crime rates in Victoria!
For example, 4,702 criminal incidents per 100,000 people in Wyndham, compared to the City of Yarra (Fitzroy, Collingwood and Richmond) 11,283 per 100,000 people.
Get you facts straight before you dish out on a suburb that is actually ok!
