Normanhurst

"A nice, safe suburb in a convenient location"

I lived here for 8 years and enjoyed it thoroughly. We lived in a nice, quiet street full of families or retired couples and most of the neighbors were friendly (with the exception of a few, as to be expected anywhere!). It's very convenient being 5 minutes from Hornsby, and you're also right in the middle where the North Shore meets the Northern Suburbs. It's not cheap to buy or rent in the area, but such is the cost of living in a nice leafy suburb!

Merrylands

"Convenient, but not much else..."

I have lived in Merrylands for the past 5 years and have to admit that I'm considering moving elsewhere. It's extremely convenient being so close to Parramatta, but other than that it's not a very peaceful, serene suburb with neighborly spirit. People are rude and lack manners, which I think is partly due to the large ethnic population in the area. It's not particularly safe, especially with the recent spate of gun crime. Parking facilities are sub-par near the station, the train into the city takes a good 50 minutes (as opposed to the 30 minute drive) and in general the roads are congested and drivers are TERRIBLE. My son's daycare centre is fantastic, but sadly I think this is the best part of living in the area. It's overpriced, overpopulated and overrated. There are much nicer places to live in Sydney if you're raising a family!

Great for

  • Central
  • Parklands

Not great for

  • Gang related violence
  • Gun crime
  • Overpriced
  • Too many units
  • Too much dumping of rubbish
