Most desirable qualities to look for in a suburb

Hi guys,

After looking around on 'local voices' and seeing how people rate and review streets and suburbs, it's pretty clear that people like those areas for different reasons. I thought it might be a good idea to get some thought's on the top reasons people live where they live. One of the most obvious indicators I have found is proximity to schools AND work.

What are your reasons for living where you live?

I think aside from the obvious financial constraints most people weigh up (1) Distance to work (2) Schools and distance for kids to travel (3) Resale and (4) Safety/Crime.

My criteria for good lifestyle is the following: 1. Great location close to water (read beaches or River) where you can live in an area that is leafy, green, peaceful and not inundated with the consant noise pollution of planes, trucks, traffic etc; 2. Low crime rate; 3. Walking distance to train station (I personally do not like buses); 4. Village type atmosphere with cafes, shops, supermarkets and within 10 mins to larger urban shopping and theatre/entertainment areas; 5. Within 30 mins to city (I personally don't like living in downtown areas of cities like Sydney as there is NOWHERE to park and I LOVE my car); 5. Close to intercity freeways which can get you in and out of the city FAST (eg the M4 or M5). That's why suburbs like Oatley, Lugarno and other waterside areas within the St George area are so desirable - they meet all this criteria and more.
