"Not so bad in the grand scheme of things"

I have grown up in Werribee and despite spending my late teens/early 20's desperate to get away from here, I can honestly say I think it is a great town. Not that it doesn't have it's problems. The plaza and stations especially get a lot of kids hanging around in packs, and a few dodgy individuals, but in my experience that happens everywhere, whether you are in the west, east, north, or inner city.

There is enough shopping at the plaza and main street so that you don't have to leave (provided you don't want sportsgirl or a decent myer, because you won't find either of those here, much to my annoyance), and if you do want to leave, Werribee is bang smack in the middle of the city or Geelong, so take your pick!

If you are after something to do, there's the zoo, the indoor and outdoor pool, bowling, cinema's, werribee south beach (when it's not too stinky it's great to take your dog for a walk) and the werribee river is great to walk/jog along and you may even see some ducks along the way! I don't agree with people who say there is nothing to do, because you make your own fun, and all it takes is some imagination or great mates to tag along.

There are great cafes down the main street who do a mean breakfast/brunch and a fantastic gluten free shop/cafe.

Now here are some of my gripes:
Public transport is lacking in some respects. As a frequent user, the buses are often late, many bus drivers are rude, the buses don't operate late enough for those work outside the '9-5', and the trains could do with a lot more services especially at peak times.
Traffic is ridiculous. Peak times are a nightmare to drive in. There is too much of a focus on new estates and expansion when the infrastructure isn't there, or isn't being upgraded to accomodate more road users. I am currently looking at buying and could not think of anything worse that buying in the outer developments and either trying to battle the traffic jams that occur just to get through/around Werribee (let alone on the freeway!), or not be able to catch a bus, because hey buses won't be running through there for a few years yet. Werribee sadly always seems a couple of steps behind in this regard.

Nightlife is a bit lacking, could definetly do with a nice bar or two as there isn't anywhere you can go to have a quiet drink that isn't a restaurant or a gaming venue. Volt and Mynt are ok in moderation, but each to their own!

Great for

  • Great shopping, cafes and restaurants
  • Short trip between two cities - Melbourne & Geelong
  • Plenty to do for families, and it's relatively cheap

Not great for

  • Nowhere nice to have a quiet drink.
  • Traffic due to population boom
  • Not enough nightlife

Looking for a home in Werribee?

"Great for young families"

I've been living in Werribee for 6 years now and it has exceeded my expectations. I moved out here for the affordability and easy commute into Melbourne CBD which has great job opportunities. I catch the train so can't comment on traffic. The place has noticeably become less dodgy over time. I feel safe walking around the streets and there are lots of great local parks.

Our salaries have since grown and we can afford to move elsewhere, but we will stay put as we like our neighbours and the amenities here. There are lots of trees where I live because I'm in the older part of Werribee with larger plots and gardens. The council also continues to plant more trees. We attract lots of birds and I love hearing them when I'm relaxing at home.

Werribee has grown into a suburb that is now reasonably vibrant during days and nights. Population is growing in this area.
Night life, restaurants and cafes a plenty in this area too.

"Beautiful Werribee"

Werribee is beautiful- river at your doorstep to go for walks, Watton st for shopping, cafes, restaurants and bars. Pacific Werribee shopping centre and train station that takes you to the city within 35 minutes. We moved to Werribee mid 2021 and there has not been one day of regret! Beach, zoo, mansion with rose garden and winery around the corner. So much to do for everybody in this suburb.

Rentals in Werribee

"Wirribi-yaluk, Wirribi, Werribee."

I start my day feeling refreshed by walking along the Werribee South Beaches.
There's ample parking and it's still free (unlike in other parts of Melbourne - shhhh).
In my free time, I step into a space of enchantment at the Victoria State Rose garden
and stroll through rose's scents of berry, wine, lemon and cloves. You're then always
drawn to the Formal grounds of Werribee Park, and your importance of time is lost; strolling under the trees from Africa, Europe, Australia and other parts of the world. Your hunger is then your guide, and you see the Werribee Mansion, where's there's the most decadent food for satisfying any craving, occasion or budget.
If I ever need more excitement or I know I can go and see Lions, Giraffes and
a world of wildness that I may never see elsewhere at the Werribee Zoo.
I end my day hitting the pavement along the Werribee River Trail, under the shadowing arms of old red gum and eucalyptus trees. The house prices are reasonable and the town has everything you need. Melbourne is only 25 mins away of the highway or take the train in 45mins. The locals don't know how good they have it here - or maybe that's why they don't make such a big deal of it.....then everyone else would find us and everything Werribee has got!

"My expirence jn Werribee"

My family and I moved out to Werribee in 2018 and have been out here since. It's pretty slow paced out here as we moved from the city. We live in Cornerstone Estate and have made this estate our home where my children are safe to play on the street with their friends just like the old days. The only downfall about living out here is that we have been hit with home burglaries. Other then that the people are good out here and our local shopping centre knows us well.

"Downsides of Werribee"

Yes the suburb has its good points, however, the not so good must also be pointed out, if I was moving here I would like to know a tad more than the peddled brochures and hype.
1. The traffic...is just awful in peak times, as there are only a couple of roads into Werribee and planners have done nothing to sort this mess out - removing the rail lines has done nothing to alleviate this problem as tens of thousands of people pour into the new estates which feed into the couple of roads into Werribee = nightmare.
2. Infrastructure has not kept up with the mass influx of new people in the suburb...lacks in basic amenities one should expect within a suburb, in particular public transport...regardless what message is peddled by the council and government...public transport is awful, pre COVID the train station is full by 7am Mon-Fri with limited flow on parking available but lots of hungry parking inspectors. Trains are forever packed liked sardines during peak hours...the only saving grace is Werribee is the start of the line, so you will get a seat, but will probably end up with someone sitting on your knee by journey's end...Werribee station is frequented by lots of rude school children as the buses stop there, plus a lot of undesirables, thank goodness for the Protective Service Officers...makes you feel a little safer.
3. The SMELL...I just recently reported it to the EPA (Dec 2020), it stinks, if it is a northerly wind, nice, fresh air, anything else itsmells, I find it very frustrating I cant open my windows as much as I would like because I don't want my home to smell. It is a real thing...
4. Shopping...There is 1 Coles in Werribee, it is more like a Coles Express, tiny and useless, however, there are normal size Woolies and Aldi, Tasman Meats, a couple of green grocers, nice strip shopping with a pleasant ambience...for those that like shopping malls and all that goes with these, there is Pacific Werribee. There are some restaurants, although I find this area could be better developed particularly near the lovely Werribee River, a resource not used or developed enough by council.
5. Housing...there is plenty of cheap housing , but very limited 'nice old established streets' as council allows subdivision of just about everything which unfortunately leads to lots of tiny slum pockets within the area...you can object as much as you want...it falls on deaf ears. What used to be a lovely low density suburb is turning into a medium density suburb with lots of low quality homes built on top of each other with no gardens or backyard areas, but lots of concrete, parked cars and air-conditioning and few trees. Personally I would seek out the nice streets...

The whole of Australia is becoming like this, affordable housing for many who have to buy lower priced homes not by choice. They are so small, poorly built, noisy and there is no privacy houses being in complexes.

"The future is bright"

We moved to Werribee late 2018 after being priced out of the inner west housing market. We were initially attracted by its affordability as you can comfortably purchase a 3 or 4 bedroom house without stretching the average family budget.

Since moving in, we have been very happy with the council's efforts to activate the main street with family friendly activities throughout summer including a pop up park with free outdoor cinema, local and well known musicians and Australia Day celebrations.

Autumn has brought along some green living seminars promoting solar, vegetable gardening and caring for Werribee's natural resource- the Werribee river.

You definitely get a sense that there is a lot of investment in the area including a 13 million dollar riverside park development with a playground and amphitheatre, plans for river facing cafes and encouraging locals to visit places like K-Rd Cliffs. Hopefully one day they'll be able to re-open the old cinema (fingers crossed).

With bike paths along the river, several trendy cafes, and a handy mid-way point between Melbourne and Geelong, Werribee is transforming into a more contemporary family friendly suburb.

"Not much opportunities"

Many comments have been made already so I won't repeat them. I live here but planning to move. Not much opportunities here, which results in many bad things happening. Remember the saying, " an idle mind is a devil's workshop".

I think it deserves it's negative reputation. One of them is, the welfare cheat capital , not of Victoria, but of Australia. (Read that from Daily Mail online). Fact: out of $40 M returned to Centrelink by its clients (because of wrongful payment) , around $10 M came from the City of Wyndham, Werribee its more prominent suburb.

The council offices' service is ridiculously slow and as if customer service is an unknown concept to them. (based on my personal experience)

A professional person who worked in a company that did work for the council said that communicating with the Wyndham City Council was a pain, they took forever to answer.

BTW, employees there get good pay considering the kind of job they do. Someone I know worked in the council. He said it's the worst govt organization he had worked for. And that their policies are encouraging dole bludging. The council is so proud of their volunteers , volunteering for the council, however, you see volunteers in their 20s, 30s who have been volunteering for more than a year , some for 5 years. One can understand those in their 40s, 50s who can't get jobs so they have to do volunteer work to get the dole but the council should limit the duration for the young people to do volunteer work, like after one year of experience they should go out to look for a job because being employed is good for their wallet, self esteem, health and as a foundation for their life.

"Great area, fast growing with a promising future CBD!!!!"

Fantastic place to live we are so glad we changed from South Eastern suburbs mayhem of traffic congestion, noise at all hours.. it takes over an hour to drive anywhere that used to take 20mins max living in the south east. Werribee has nice spacious affordable homes most with double garage as standard as well as your own on street parking which is a huge plus for us! This would cost 3 to 5 times more on the ""South Eastern"" (Over rated) side of Melb for average home!!! Walk easy to shops with great clean air wonderful parks and schools just 5mins away, train station is 4 mins drive by car and 5mins by bus direct route. Such mazing infrastructure growing at a fast pace like we have never seen a council do before!!The train is 40mins to CBD and wonderful and comfort commute to the city...lovely very safe travels. The only downside is too much construction and lots of land work but infrastructure seems to be improving. On the flip side Neighbourly feeling and feels safe now. More schools, easy freeway access being built now, new roads, water ways, another future station is in the pipeline closer to us. With new CBD coming in the near future, Werribee will be the go to place.
There is so much being done in our neighbourhood we are incredibly lucky to have moved here in a stress free environment, never slept so well at night :) peaceful and quiet. Blissful!.. highly recommend.

"Good place!!!!!! Absolutely no regrets moving here from Carnegie - Life's good!!!!!!!!!!"

I lived for many years in Carnegie, but I don't regret moving to Werribee at all. People have this opinion that West is not a good place to live or bring up kids. But that's all rubbish, every suburb has good and bad. The beauty is first home buyers can still afford a decent size block here. No one should feel discouraged for what some people say, its all about your own experiences and what you want for your or your family.Sure, Werribee has some issues, but the same issues exist in many parts of Melbourne and in suburbs where house prices are treble of those in WerrIbee. It's about 6 months that my family and I are living in werribee, and it's amazing for us, werribee is still very, very cheap compared to most areas of melbourne, meaning that families can afford a comfortable house without being rich. it also has rail and freeway access to the city, which makes city access fairly easy outside peak times. i also find that crime seems to be overstated. Do your research and find your dream property, afterall life is not that bad in Werribee.

"Fair!"

THIS REVIEW IS BASED IN OUR OWN EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL OPINION.

I should start telling a little bit about us so you will know what our expectations are.
We are a married couple with no kids, mid thirties, full time skilled working professionals, migrants, with almost 7 years living in Melbourne, travellers, food lovers (Including smashed avocado/brunch lovers). We absolutely love the unique Melbourne's lifestyle and have lived in places like Carlton, Richmond, Hawthorn, Carnegie and Burwood.

PROS

-Access to the city is quite easy and quick being the suburb 30Km from the CBD. the limited express train takes in reality 42mins to get to the city in peak hours. We used to live 17Km from the city, I would say there is no much of a difference about the time that I take to commute every morning.

-House affordability is still existent in this area. You still can get a family house for under 600K, units under 400K, so this was definitely the main reason why we moved out here being first home owners.

-Pacific Werribee shopping centre is very good. We can find all the stores that we need, no need to go shopping someplace else, its a big shopping centre. In general the area has everything you need in term of shopping for you and your house.

-A lot of planning for developing and redeveloping quite a few areas around whyndam city so its a good place for a long term investment - Price grow trend is still pretty good in comparison with more expensive and high end suburbs that seems to be stabilising (Please refer to Corelogic statistics or other source)

-Werribee river is very nice and relaxing for walks or bike rides. There are a few quite and nice pockets in the area-There are other few nice places around like the Werribee mansion, zoo and the beach.

- Seems to be a family friendly place with lots of activities for kids. Just my perception in comparison with other places that we have lived.

-In general it feels very similar to any other average suburb

CONS

- The west "stereotype" is in someway true. The area has a lot of diversity and the lower end of migrants or refugees population is more notorious, as well as stablished lower incomers. Not being discriminant on this aspect, I am a migrant myself, but you quite easy notice the difference in demographics. Please note there are many areas in Melb (not only west) with this profile. Overall you see a bit of everything. Personally this is something that doesnt bother me as far as it is safe, see next...

- Crime statistics are higher than the average eastern suburb, but look carefully at this aspect because there are some areas around the east/south-east that might have the same number or even higher. It is not that alarming like people say don’t go out after 7pm. In general you have to have the same degree of precaution like any other place. Be careful listening to people experiences or comments (specially those who never lived here and only repeat what they heard) Look at the statistics yourself and make your own decision. I don’t believe it is as bad as some people says, things happen yes, so do in other places around Melbourne. Look very carefully around the new estates as I have read about many breaks into outer new estates like manor vale or wyndam vale.

- Unfortunately, it does smell sometimes and I don’t know why people don’t mention anything about it. We have been here for almost 3 months and something smell to us. Most of the time is fine, but some days will stink almost everyday(like last couple of weeks- they might be doing some sort of work or its probably the hot weather?). I suspect the smell might come from the water treatment plant?, I used to work close to one and its a very similar smell, some people will say its too far to feel the smell, may be, but I have noted that it depends on winds and when it does it happens mornings or evenings and isn't a permanent smell. We have felt the smell in hoppers too. Some other people says is from fertilisers from near by farms?
I don't know, but this is in someway annoying specially if you have (like me) very sensitive sense of smell

-The area need more cafes and nightlife. We have been in a couple of good rated places but there are not a lot of options. I also feel it needs more specialty stores or fresh food markets to get organic produce, etc. Hopefully this change with the new developments
I also saw a food truck festival this year that was nice. Not sure how many more activities we will have coming to Werribe.

-I used to use the Glen Waverley line which I found pretty good. Werribee line is quite busy and I find more delays than glen Waverley, in particular peak hours in the afternoon. Morning is just fine. I park my car at Werribee station and commute from there. Car park is full around 7:30am.

In conclusion, if someone ask if we have had any regrets about moving to Werribee, we would say definitely no. I think it was a good investment and we hope to see the area to continue developing. It isn't perfect and it can't be compared with some others booming high end areas of Melbourne, but it is perfect for your first home or long term investment, we are happy with our decision.
No one should feel discouraged for what some people say, its all about your own experiences and what you want for your or your family.

Hi Gab,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Werribee. Regarding the smell, in my opinion, it is an environmental and health issue. Who wants to live with such stink smell? Do you anybody have filed complaints to Wyndham Council for investigation. I think the council should investigate the source of the smell. May I ask which area in Werribee you live and smell it? Thanks.

Gab Quijada
Gab Quijada

Hi there,
I haven't heard about anyone filing a complaint, we are new the area so we don't know anyone around, but now that you have mentioned I will definitely do. This seems to be a known and accepted issue that many seem to ignore for some reason. We live 2km north to the Werribee station, but when the smell is on you will feel it once you hit hoppers crossing station, around Werribee station too. Cant say about other areas because these are the places I usually frequent. The smell is not permanent either, I will say it happens every 2 o3 weeks in particular times of the day mornings or evenings.

Point Cooks Featherbrook and Saratoga Estates would occasionally have the stench coming from the treatment ponds. A call went to the EPA when this occurred to advise however no feedback was provided.

I have personally notified the EPA 5+ times. Every time, I get a lip-service answer: "We are not going to investigate further". I am lucky I will be able to move elsewhere in a couple of months. But there is something clearly fishy about those gas being released in Werribee's air that nobody wants to talk about. All I know is that I don't want to find myself with a cancer or any other respiratory disease 10+ years down the line because of these shady complacent practices. Better be safe than sorry.

"It stinks"

Werribee would be a good place if it didn’t stink 50% of nights. If you’re a ‘like the windows open at night’ kind of person, you ain’t gunna like Werribee. It’s a shame because the suburb itself is quite good. Everything you need is there. Slightly over represented with deadshits, but I’ve never had any trouble with em. Because of the stench issues, I wouldn’t be forking out the kind of money the are asking for homes here right now. If I’m going to part with half a mil for a place, I don’t want to open The windows to let in air smelling of turds.
Can’t believe more people haven’t mentioned the smell. If people tell you there is no smell, they’re lying. I live here. It stinks. Not all the time but often enough to give you the shits. Actually it stinks now.

Hi Daniel, I live just north of Werribee South and don't have a problem with fresh air. Very occasionally there is a fertiliser smell from the farms but this happens infrequently.
The large pools at the Western Treatment Plant have been covered for many years. I'm wondering if the smell you are experiencing comes from somewhere else?

markb57

Hi helenj5, The smell is from the Western Treatment Plant, as it's 110 square kilometres.. Wont be missing that smell

annn7

@helenj5 There is no "fertiliser smell": it is an urban legend designed to occult the real issue (i.e the Treatment plant's inability to implement proper odour control at all time). I have lived in rural/remote WA (with cattle, farms, etc) for 7 years prior to moving to Werribee. Never have I had any issue with smells from fertiliser back there. It's time to stop the misinformation.

well, where do i start? oh yeah, when i was born. in st.mercy hospital of course, lol. i was born here but can't really say it's nice. in school, always bullied with teachers only giving them detentions. so, during the end of my stay i ended up getting personally harraised by a street bully. not to say that it is all bad. the shops are great and the service, mmm. plus i met my fiance here. but that's beside the point, lol. but if safety is what you want... look elsewhere. the police, or pigs as i call them, are worthless. but good for eventual visits, just don't stay for too long.

Schools are very good in Werribee, like Suzanne Cory Highschool is an selective school where it got one of the highest VCE results in Victoria. "Country Town Feel"

Purchased a house here 7 years ago after living in 'better' class eastern suburbs, and have never looked back.

Sure, Werribee has some issues, but the same issues exist in many parts of Melbourne and in suburbs where house prices are treble of those in WerrIbee.

There are some fantastic pockets of Werribee that are still super affordable. Spend a few hours around Watton street and meet the true locals.....ask questions, nobody is in a hurry around here! Kids have a ball exploring the local river.

I personally prefer the areas closer to the old part of town.
If in the market to purchase, look south of Synott st, Greaves St north or west of the racecourse. Avoid areas closer to the Plaza.
Dont be put off by comments of people who dont live in this undiscovered oasis....

I love having a walk down Watton Street. All the small businesses there and their owners really make the place great. Seems the nightlife is getting better too which is good

"Good and bad - depends where your priorities are"

I know when anything bad is said about werribee locals will probably comment calling me a snob, im not, just trying to be more honest than some on here.
firstly, the pro's, werribee is still very, very cheap compared to most areas of melbourne, meaning that families can afford a comfortable house without being rich. it also has rail and freeway access to the city, which makes city access fairly easy outside peak times. i also find that crime seems to be overstated, maybe it just seems higher due to the presence of groups of teenagers on the streets. since its flat, cycling is fairly easy compared with more hilly parts of the city. also the new train line to geelong looks like it will probably act like a new suburban train line to areas like wyndham vale and tarneit, making public transport way better in the area.

On the down side, the low rents here and the increase in rents in previously low-rent suburbs like footscray or newport has pushed most of the ferals out to the outer burbs, with werribee taking more than its fair share. yeah yeah, all areas have them- but werribee definitely has a much higher proportion. in addition, the area around werribee has grown massively in the past few years, without road infrastructure being updated so traffic gets even worse than in areas much closer to the city. although the houses are cheap, that doesn't mean the cost of living is, and it can end up being higher than paying rent in suburbs with better services and shorter travel distances. for me tho, the worst thing is the way the general area looks- where there arent houses yet, the west mainly looks like a dust bowl, flat and brown and featureless. then development on top of this looks like a haphazard mix of oil refineries and shabby industrial areas and tacky mcmansion housing estates. the freeway landscaping is probably about the prettiest view around.

Great for

  • New train stations coming to the area
  • Short trip between two cities - Melbourne & Geelong
  • Plenty to do for families, and it's relatively cheap

Not great for

  • Region looks industrial, flat and barren
  • Traffic due to population boom
  • Not enough nightlife
  • Public transport can be unreliable at times

"MUCH better than what people make it out to be"

I moved to Werribee 8 years ago after living in Clayton all my life. It is the best thing I have ever done in my life.
Growing up, I used to hear stories about the 'dreaded' western suburbs and that they were all best avoided. I used to believe Werribee stunk because of the sewage farm. I used to think it was a little bogan town.
But 10 years ago I visited Werribee for the first time when I took my kids to the zoo. We spent the day in Werribee... and we loved it. All those stereotypes about this amazing town were quickly thrown out the window. So, a couple of years later my wife and I bought a home here and we haven't looked back!!
Werribee is a huge town with a huge population. There is absolutely NO noticeable smell of sewage so I don't know how that stereotype came to be.
There's so much on offer in Werribee. The shopping is brilliant. The local Werribee Plaza has over 230 stores (inside and outside the complex), and then you have Watton St in Werribee CBD with plenty of cafes/restaurants/bars, and some of these overlook the beautiful Werribee River which is getting a facelift. Wyndham City Council has plans to make Werribee a capital city for the west, so they are improving its physical image to cater for that.
You also have the Werribee South Beach, and the Werribee Open Range Zoo (one of the best zoos in Australia), Werribee Mansion, and the State Rose Garden. All of these are beautiful and fun filled activities.
Werribee is safe. I've never felt unsafe and I don't know anybody who has. Never seen any trouble, so I don't understand why people call it unsafe. There's plenty of nice parks and gardens for my kids to play in, and facilities like the Wyndham Leisure Centre for my older kids. There's a local outdoor swimming pool at the end of Watton St.

Living in Werribee is cheap! It's one of the cheapest suburbs in Melbourne and is very popular for young families, retirees and singles. One of the best things about Werribee is that it's so close to both Melbourne and Geelong (30 mins to either city). Then you have the Great Ocean Road only a short drive from there.
Locals in Werribee are friendly. It's so easy to bump into someone you know in the street and have a chat with them. A lot of the older residents are happy to chat with anyone!
Public transport is pretty good. Trains run every 10-20 minutes during peak hour. It's quite well serviced by buses, but could be a little better.
There are heaps of good schools around. My older kids are enrolled in Mackillop and are doing really well. My younger kids are still at kindergarten and have made lots of friends. Education here is very good!

I could really go on about how brilliant Werribee really is, but I don't want this message to be too long. It's really better than what people say it is. Life here is easy, laid back, cheap, friendly, safe, everything you could want from a mini city.

If you actually read the crime stats you will find Wyndham City (Werribee) has one of the lower crime rates in Victoria!
For example, 4,702 criminal incidents per 100,000 people in Wyndham, compared to the City of Yarra (Fitzroy, Collingwood and Richmond) 11,283 per 100,000 people.
Get you facts straight before you dish out on a suburb that is actually ok!

Wow, makes me wonder if you really don't live here but just hate on Werribee. Because you ranked everything so low when there is SO MUCH on offer!!!! There's heaps of shopping options from the Werribee Plaza to Watton St. There's heaps of eating out options with great cafes/restaurants in Watton/Synnott St, and the Plaza. I've never witnessed any crime and don't know anyone who has, so a 1 star rating for safety is crazy. Cost of living only 2 stars?? It's the 2nd cheapest suburb in Melbourne!!!!!!!!

yv3013

cost of living to me isn't just about money, i know it's cheap, but it wasn't planned on being cheap, just turned out that way.
I would of changed my shopping rating as I forgot they had a plaza somewhere, but I won't as your ratings above are tanked up for your own benefit.
no I'm not a resident, just a visitor sometimes, whew..

People in Melbourne need to get over themselves! The West...blah blah blah. There are many areas ALL over Melbourne which leave a lot to be desired......Price tags HIGH...and it makes me smile as these dodgy little over priced suburbs are not Kensington...LONDON. "Not what it used to be"

I am a local having lived in werribee for 50 years.
I have seen it go from a quiet country town where you knew everyone and felt safe to what it is today.
There are hardly any trees. A few years ago the council decided they didn't want them on nature strips. The traffic is horrendous. Try getting into werribee from Wyndham vale during peak hour. They are building new estates on land that has always flooded. There are so many different races now and they are all forming gangs. There are so many drugs. My mum won't even go into the main street alone any more as she does not feel safe.

I left werribee for a smaller safer place. I go there to visit friends and I don't regret my move at all.

Agreed. I moved here 9 months ago, expecting the place to be a typical suburban area. But no: I had someone sneak into my shed in the middle of the lockdown to do his/her drugs at night. Everyone that walks up my street looks like they haven't had a shower in 10 days. 75% of the people smell of cheap/rotten cigarette, the town smells of fart mixed with chemicals 5 days/month, the area around the station looks like a junkyard with rubbish all over the place. And I'm not going to talk about the hoons, the poor quality of the houses and the atrocious deployment of Covid-related health services. Werribee = No future, but I guess that's how the communist cartel of MLAs want it to be.

"OK If you are on a budget"

With the Extortionate prices that a reasonable lifestyle comes at, well Werribee is pretty good value for money. I lived in Hoppers for decades and went to Werribee (inc the boat ramp) many many times.
I am now interstate, but I have some relatives there, one of which was burgalled twice in 1 year in Tyrone Street.. It only takes a few of these events to go off a place, and it looks like the scumbags have moved into the area. it happens everywhere, I suppose, but as the houses are pretty inexpensive, you get investors buying there and with those "low rent" homes, come a few horrible criminals. They would not go to Toorak, or Kew, because the rent is very high.. So they end up stealing from ordinary working strugglers like most Western Suburb people. So due to Werribee's attractuions, there also some real "dogs' living in your neighbourhood.
But at least You/Us Melbournites use indicators and have a basic idea how to drive... :-)

What a complete load of Rubbish! Melbournites know how to Drive? ROFL. What an amazing generalisation - people don't steal in Toorak etc!

"A fantastic community!"

I have lived in Werribee my whole life, and it is really starting to boom! It's cleaning up its act and getting serious. Crime isn't all that high as what it used to be, and it is becoming much more civilised, peaceful and respectable.
Living in Werribee is like living near the coast (Werribee South beach), living rural (lots of farm land and countryside), and living near the city (cafes, restaurants, shopping).
Werribee is a big town with a main shopping centre, the Werribee Plaza with over 230 stores including Big W, Kmart, Coles, Woolworths and even Myer. It will be redeveloped so it will become double the size, so it will be like Highpoint. There's the Open Range Zoo, Werribee Mansion, State Rose Garden and Werribee Park Golf Course just 5-10 mins from the town centre, with the beach an extra 5-10 minutes further.

The main street, Watton Street, is lined with trees and cafes which overlook the Werribee river.
The people are some of the friendliest I have ever met. Mynt and Volt are the nightclubs popular with young adults/teenagers. There's some great events that go on in Werribee such as the Weerama (street parade with games and rides), Werribee Racecourse Market, Twilight Cinema at Werribee Park, and other events. There's also the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre, so there's a real sense of community here and you can't really get bored.

Werribee is only 30-40 mins by train to both Geelong and Melbourne. Though the public transport in Werribee is not all that great, but still not bad.
There are plans to develop Werribee more including the Wedge Street Piazza (google that!) in the town centre, apartment living, and also the new Wyndham Harbour which is going to be constructed (check that out too!).

It's certainly a developing suburb and I think people ought to give Werribee a chance. It is genuinely moving on from the western suburbs stigma and is definitely becoming a more attractive suburb to live and work.

"Not nearly as bad as some people describe it."

I moved to Werribee in 2006 in one of the newer estates. When I told people that I'm moving to Werribee a lot of people were saying things like "Oh my God, it's so dangerous there!", "It's whoop whoop from everywhere", "It's a farm!" etc... All of those were proven WRONG! I actually like Werribee, I've moved a lot throughout my life including various suburbs within Melbourne and even New South Wales and Queensland, I think Werribee is better than most of the places I've lived in. Especially with the location! Located halfway between Melbourne and Geelong you have the advantage when it comes to choice and variety. 30 minutes is all it takes and bang your in the middle of something big. Being classed as on the outskirts is also good, because you have the suburban lifestyle, yet its easy to get away from all the hustle and bustle and just go see what rural Victoria has to offer. Public transport was improved in 2009, by adding extra trains to the Werribee line which has trains every ten or so minutes on weekdays while other lines apart from Sandringham don't have that advantage and have trains every twenty minutes to half an hour. Werribee is pretty big there are plenty of primary schools around and three main high schools. Shopping is easy, you have Werribee plaza, Watton Street (also known as main street with the locals) and a few extra smaller shopping centres within the newer estates such as Tarneit and Wyndham Vale. Cafe's are not so great, the majority being on Watton Street, shut too early, have nothing really going on to make it stand out and grab the attention of people, they'd more likely end up on Lygon street in Carlton/Brunswick. Nightlife is a bit meh, you have Mynt Lounge on Watton street which is pretty good for a cheap night out and close to home and there is also Volt which is right at the plaza behind the tabaret. There are two main libraries, and plenty of parks and nature strips especially surrounding the Werribee river, and the open range zoo is towards Werribee south.. Furthermore, traffic isn't much of an issue, the freeway is great and the backroads will lead you to other western suburbs such as Melton, Deer Park, Laverton, Sunshine... etc... in no time :)

"Peaceful with plenty to do"

I was born and raised in Werribee, and I know there will be some people who will disagree with me saying that it is "peaceful". It's really only around the train station where you will frequently see a group of teenagers smoking, but doesn't necessarily mean they are doing anything wrong. Or there might be a group of teenagers who walk around the streets at night, but mind their own business, like they do around my street. I have never had any problems when it comes to crime. I have never once in my whole life living in Werribee, felt unsafe, which is good.
Werribee is quite large, and downtown there are plenty of shops - clothing, cafes, take-away, restaurants, etc. Werribee is growing rapidly and there are plenty of jobs around without having to travel into the city each day. We are about 40-50 minutes train ride, or 20-30 minutes drive from the city.
We have the Werribee Plaza with over 230 stores (such as Kmart, Big W, Myer, JB Hi Fi, Coles, Woolies etc) in and around the shopping centre, as well as a Village Cinemas. The plaza will soon expand its size to become like Highpoint. Then we have the Werribee Open Range Zoo, Mansion, Park, and State Rose Garden to provide plenty of fun and entertainment for children and families. There's the Werribee River if you want to go canoeing and exploring. The Werribee South beach is not far from town, and we also have the Werribee Golf Course.
The western suburbs tend to have a bad reputation, but I think those are mostly inner-western, and western suburbs. Werribee is in the south west. I think the further out you go, the safer and more peaceful it is.
All in all, Werribee is safe, great for families, cheap, and is half way between Melbourne and Geelong.

"Booming Suburb set to go OFF!!"

Werribee about two decades ago was filled with predominantly 'white' low income families trying to make ends meet or were cashed up farmers; mostly 2nd-3rd generation immigrants who resided in Werribee South. The community has certainly diversified with lots of Australians from different backgrounds making Werribee its home. Today its location as well as the Governments injection of allocated funds, make it one of the fastest growing suburbs in Melbourne. It is due to have a new Marina set up similar to the one in Williamstown with cafes and restaurants. It is only 15-20 minutes away from the city and the upgraded Freeway has four lanes to drive down in peak hour traffic. There will be a new train line in the area in the next couple of years. There are certainly more cafes and restaurants and no longer is there just the choice of Italian food, with an increase in Middle Eastern restaurants, Indian and Asian food. There is also lots of shops with Indian and Afghan spices, and others that cater to Tongan or Asian tastes. Plenty of Halal butchers and several suppermarkets in the area. Plenty to do with the kids: there is Werribee Park and Mansion, 'the river', Werribee beach, 'the Plaza' and cinemas, boasts two libraries, a nice walk down the main street with an ice cream treat. Hairdressers in the area are actually quite good comparred to other suburbs I have been to. Its not a fashion precinct so you will need to drive about 25 minutes to Highpoint or city if you like fashion labels and variety. However in saying this the Plaza does have the usual Myer, Diva, House, Big W, Supre, Forever New as well as a couple of cute boutiques for Men and Women

"Werribee is great, but only for some!"

I was born and raised in Werribee for the last 26 years. I have lived all around Werribee and this is my opinion... In regards to job opportunities, schooling, medical needs etc Werribee fortunately has it all! Retail therapy and shopping Werribee is also idea for, the Werribee Plaza has it all! The other plus is it is very easy and reasonably quick for a trip into the CBD.

Now for the negative.. Werribee is far from a safe area. There are alot of drugs, violence and hang abouts. Its not a town that I would ever let my children play outside unless under my complete supervision. You do get this in every town how ever I do believe it is very bad here and with the police shortage which is not set to get any better anytime soon I would not reccommend moving to werribee in hope of a fun, friendly family enviroment.

I will also add that i believe Werribee is an ivestors dream location. Its is growing bid and fast!

We are thinking of leaving this rat race and moving into the bush.

"Close to Melbourne but it feels a little bit country"

This is probably a good area for families, especially those where nobody has to get into the CBD for work. Its a reasonable trip out of Melbourne itself but it gets plenty of visitors with the open plain zoo around.
It has a nice vibe to it and is well serviced by public transport.
There are plenty of shops within walking distance to get what you need, but if you need anything that you can't get around the corner there are more shops further afield and Melbourne isn't far away.
There are some good places to eat out around the area but if you're looking to party all night then you may need to look elsewhere.
For those with school age kids there are some good schools in the area.
The Werribee river winds its way around town making for a great spot to take a stoll, and there are also a number of parks. A great area for kids.
And a little bonus - the beach isn't far either, just a short drive.

"Zoo where the animals roam free"

I have to be honest - I'm not a fan of zoos. I don't like seeing animals in captivity, but I must say I really enjoyed my visit to the Werribee Open Range Zoo. The animals roam free - it's like you're visiting them in their natural habitat, which is an amazing experience. We saw hippos and giraffes, much to the delight of the younger people along for the ride. The great thing is that you get to go around the zoo on an open vehicle which truly allows you to get up close and personal with the wildlife. You'll think you're on a safari.
