Werribee zoo - has anybody been?

Im thinking of taking the kids to the zoo and a friend said to try the one at Werribee. How does it compare to the Melbourne zoo?

In my opinion it doesnt...we are friends of the zoo and visit both....you can really spend a day at melbourne zoo...i find that werribee zoo your experience really depends on the day..we have had days where the animals come right up to the bus and other days when we needed to squint to see the animals...i can honestly say though that we have been there about half a dozen times and we are yet to see the lions close up...
The safari trip is pretty good and lasts about 40min but really after that there really isnt too much to do....jmo

How does the werribee zoo work? Get in a car and drive around fields full of animals? I love the Melbourne Zoo BTW :)

The main attraction at werribee is that the zoo is free range....when you enter you book onto a safari trip..you all board a bus and they take you on a drive around the park....you get to see wildebeast, camels, antelope, and different horned animals...then you go to a section with giraffes, zebras rhinos and the likes...the animals are just strolling around and you get to see them reasonably close on a good day...we have had giraffes literally lick the windows....and rhinos up so close you could touch them...the tour lasts about 40 min off memory and then you are free to walk around...you can see the hippos which is a reasonably new enclosure and very well done and also they have a lion park...but to date we have not had an experience worth mentioning with them..there is also a section that you walk around that has kangaroos and emus
that just about sums it up...
but you can look at this link (crosses fingers and hopes it works....lol)

That looks like so much fun! I think I might have to take my nephew along over the summer break, so it gives me an excuse to go :)

Thanks for the info Tempy

I took my 3 grandkids a few months back when they had the dinosaur exhibits and we all had a wonderful day. My daughter and I took them yesterday but we were only there an hour when we got a little stuck logistically because of various reasons dealing with special needs children and 2 staff in particular charged in and could not have been more helpful even if they wanted to. Our day changed from thinking we need to leave to spending the whole day there... it's quite humbling so a HUGE thanks to the staff who went out of their way to see that these kids had a lovely day.

Hi,

They are both great. I have taken my kids to Melbourne and Werribee Zoos. They loved both. Different experience, it's worth taking them to the open range zoo in Werribee so they get up and close to the animals.

Thanks
