Hahndorf is a very nice Adelaide hills town. Issues you need to be aware of are: (1) parking on or near the main street of Hahndorf is a nightmare because it is a very touristy town. Just something to be aware of. (2) The bus trip Hahndorf-Adelaide is one hour each way. If you'll be working in admin, you'll most likely be working in the city. So you'll either be spending 2 hours per day on a bus, or paying about $13 per day for parking. The freeway into the city is busy in the morning and it will take you about an hour to get in if you drive. I think the buses stop running quite early, as well, so if you want to see a show or need to work late you could have problems. Your family will need to run 2 cars if you live in the hills (3) There have been bushfires around Hahndorf in the last couple of weeks. I think the town centre is fairly safe, but please google 'CFS Hahndorf Bushfire Safer Precinct' to get an idea of the safer parts of town to live in. (4) You'll need to see if mains gas is available in the hills. That will affect your husband's work prospects.
Having said all of the above, Hahndorf is a beautiful little town and I would gladly live there if I had work in the actual town, or within 15 minutes' drive. Crime rates are low. If you're willing to work in hospitality or retail, you could probably get a job in Hahndorf. I suggest your husband contacts some plumbers through the yellow pages to get an idea of work prospects. Other users on here will hopefully be able to fill you in on schools.

That's a very general question. Have a look at www.adelaidemetro.com.au for bus/train/tram routes and timetables. What sort of amenities are you after? There are supermarkets/dentists/hairdressers etc all over Adelaide. With kids aged 16, 14 and 7, I would be looking at which school/s I wanted to send them to, and then go from there.

Ha ha yes it was rather general -to be more specific, We are looking at Hahndorf -as it appears very similar to home and hoping that the crime rates are reitively low .We're hoping that there are enough sports/youth activites in the area (either associated with or without the school) and facilities support the area .But important for me is that the community spirit is a positive one. We are in communications with St.Michaels Primary and need to consider a secondary school, Cornerstone College has been suggested as Mount Barker High sounds not as popular(?) Very much looking forward to coming at the end of the year.Work needs to be secured in the Plumbing industry for my Husband (experienced with 15 years gas and LPG commercial /domestic) and myself in administration.Would consider any appropriate work within erasonable commute.Any information about this area gratefully and thankfully received.

*reasonable commute ! Excited reply!
