Is it true that the air quality in winter is bad due to wood fires?

I read an (old) article where a doctor was quoted as telling people to not live in Armidale due to bad air quality. With many people opting for solar panels, meaning there are less 'wood fires' , does this still apply?

It's fine, similar to most places with a cold climate during the winer. I actually quite like it, the aromatic smell of wood fire filling my nostrils. With each cool inhale the brisk air compliments the wood fire smell well to create a real sensual feeling of comfort. Im asthmatic and still have no issues, the air however is slightly thinner then other towns due to its elevation but nothing noticeable.
