Reviews of Essendon, VIC

"Not bad"

If you love the sound of loud jet engines and helicopters landing every 30 minutes, you’ll love it here. Avoid the restaurants in Niddrie - they’re really average. Traffic is a nightmare with trams going through multi-lane roundabouts. Really poor planning.

Looking for a home in Essendon?

"No stigma here"

In some cliquy circles in Melbourne, living north of the river and especially to the north west, is encumbered with a negative social class stigma.

Definitely no so living in the grand old inner areas around Essendon including Moonee Ponds and Ascot Vale where you shall find some of Melbourne’s most gorgeous stately homes along beautiful tree lined street which would rival the inner east favourites such as Kew and Hawthorn.

Essendon also offers exceptional public transport options including trains and trains not to mention fast access to both the CBD and the airport.

Leisure infrastructure is superb with well established gardens and dining and shopping opportunities diverse and plentiful from famous Puckle Street to DFO .

"Great location with some not so great people"

It's one of those suburbs that have risen in status in recent years due to close proximity to CBD but with culture left behind. There's little diversity(racism), and quite a lot of inconsiderate and entitled property owners (boomers) who lack basic respect for others. We love the trees and parks here, but they are continuously being cut down for over development. For a suburb that looks peaceful on the surface, you'll be surprised how often there's loud parties held by people in their 50s. Beware. It's a certain crowd. Choose your neighbors wisely.

Also there's loads of dog shit around Glass St and branching areas. Quite a few houses had to put up their own signs on the nature strip to deter it. Again, inconsiderate people. We did not see this happening in other suburbs we lived in. Much better off going to Moonee Ponds instead.

I don't think people can be nice and racist at the same time tbh

donni

True, you are right. Some people pretend to be nice but actually prejudice and ignorant in their heart.

donni

Such shame to have such nasty people to live in such nice area.

"Great area for families, great cafe culture and overall good environment."

Essendon is a great place for families as it is in close proximity to good schools. There are also countless amazing cafes for those who are into cafe culture. It is a clean area, and people here are polite and welcoming.

"Great schools, parks, and access to transport"

We chose Essendon when moving back to Melbourne from the US. The leafy streets, big lot sizes, parks and top-rated schools are the reasons it topped our list. After 2 years, still very pleased. Plus: the local restaurants during COVID have been terrific.

"NICE......but"

It is a nice place however, with all the apartments going up and it just gets busier and busier, not a good vibe anymore, over growded and too much traffic.

"Train delays in the morning. Nice homes. Fancy mother's. Lots of small business owners. Community feel."

Nice family area, old homes need alot of renovation though. Certain pockets have nice leafy trees, parks for kids to run and play and bike. Lots of dog walkers.
Very family oriented. Mother's seem to be dressed up to the 9's here in Aus labels for some reason. Always skinny jeans and heels and a Gucci/Louis vuitton bag. Alot of them don't work or run their own beauty/photography/health businesses. Becomes a clinquey crowd when you pick them up from schools in their BMW. The dad's are all business owners who have their own car mechanic, restaurant, dry cleaner , fitness gym, real estate, builder business it seems. It feels like sandrigham meets port melbourne crowd.

Pet hate are the Train station not good- too many delays. Always packed. If you work in the CBD expect to catch early train otherwise too packed and can't even get in.
Driving to the CBD is bad if you go through Monee ponds or Flemington in peak hour. Be warn trams will delay you to work bcoz they stop at every stop all the way down. I do wish there was a variety of cuisines restaurants and more modern/loft brunch cafes though instead of the usual italian/pasta restaurants. Moonee ponds has more diverity restaurants.

Essendon is a dream just around the corner. Facilities and parks galore. Easy access to the Airport (For all you travellers out there) and CBD only 12 kms away. If you like the suburbs and family vibe, go for Essendon. Its sister Moonee Ponds is more for the younger crowd with apartments, restaurants and brunches, entertainment and shops popping up everywhere to accomondate the next wave of single working professionals and young people.

"Nice Peaceful Area- LGBT+ Family friendly"

My partner and I just moved into the area. We wanted suburba but close to the CBD for work and other areas for entertainment ( eg. Brunwick street, Highpoint shopping centre, DFO). We dont want to live in a centre of busyness and foot traffic but close enough to drive somewhere that does. Lovely people who are friendly and there is a nice community about it all. Lots of leafy green well maintain parks and streets. I like taking my dog out for a walk in my neighbourhood and the foot pavements are tidy. Lots of nice bunch cafes happening on weekends. All nice vibes.

Amazing restaurants, easy transport (Train and Tran) and the best is their great support for young families. The Moonee valley council has sing alongs at all their libraries, organised playgroups, dad meet ups etc. Very close and supportive community with many green spaces. It’s easy to get around and beautiful green streets to enjoy.

"If we had Liberal MP I would probably be happier instead of Labor"

My honest review of the area is that The value of the area would be risen higher if our MP was Liberal instead of Labor. Current Labor MP does nothing to help small businesses in the area & infranstructure which is substantial for our communities to grow.
Alot of period style old homes that needs to be renovated along with an older demographic 35+60s.
Essendon train station needs to up their lines, constant train delays getting into work in the CBD. If the trains are not running then the only other way is to catch the tram which is absolutely horrandous during peak hour as there is only one every half an hour and always packed to the max because it's coming down the same line. Be on the lookout for missing a few trams and trains to work.

If you dont like going into the city and want to own your own business in the area, great but then more support should be provided to promote businesses in the inner north-west to survive and that is something the current MP not paying attention too. Essendon primary school is overcrowded if your in the public system and if you want your kids in private school penleigh & essendon grammar has a bit of a waitlist. Had to send my kids to Wesley college in the city.

Mixture of business owners, teachers, construction + trades, white collar workers live in this area.

"Leafy Green suburb- Close TO CITY CBD- Private Schools: Dentists, Cosmetic Surgeons, Wellness centres, Property Developers, Soccer Mums area"

Essendon is an Expensive area, no doubt about it.
Back in the 90s, When you think of Essendon you would think of the TV show Underbelly, Essendon's Football Club, How Italian the community was, and Leafy green suburbs.
Well now its still has that bit of Italian community and leafy green suburbs but now feels a bit like a mix between the Eastern suburbs Brighton mothers and Kew-like Developers. Alot of mothers are stay-at-home mothers raising their children, ushing them to soccer practice or owning a wellness centre. You get the professionals like the dentists, and cosmectic surgeons in the area and alot of luxury home developers living here and of course the local business owners here.
Then you get the white collar workers catching the VERY PACKED Essendon Train in the mornings and it gets really bad when the train DELAYS because there is only one line (craigieburn line which picks up passengers from all the new estate areas!) so you would either get delays or trains arent working which means you have to tram it into the office.

While it is a close family area to live in (20mins Drive non peak hours) into the CBD, I found the Train station to be very frustrating at times.
You get a very Cafe lifestyle here, weekends people are always brunching and bringing their kids out to the local parks. Its got a very nice family vibe.
Brunswick East is the suburb right next to it if you want the hipster lifestyle however Essendon is nice, its just starting to get overcrowded with all the apartments that are starting to pop up and the lost of classical period homes.

"The best of the best !"

Essendon unlike its neighbouring suburbs such as Moonee Ponds, Ascot Vale etc... has some of the best schools in Melbourne !! This is a contributing factor to the high price of housing in Essendon and so it should be. Buckley Park College is an amazing public school, it has a terrfiic reputation and yields great results. Many people who live in neighbouring suburbs only wish they were in the zone for Buckley Park College. The fact that Essendon has some of the best schools in Melbourne sets it apart from the other suburbs, and in my opinion, puts Essendon in a league of its own. There are a combination of beautiful Period homes, Modern and French Provincial inspired homes that add to the appeal of the area. The locals are spoilt for choice when it comes to cafes and restaurants with a great selection. There are many shopping strips with lovely little boutique stores, cafes etc... With its family friendly vibe, abundance of parks and recreational activities, it certainly makes Essendon an attractive area to raise a family and also for those seeking a safe environment to live in. Not to mention the prestigious pockets of Essendon including the Mar Lodge Estate with beautiful homes on large blocks of land with single dwelling covenants, adding to the prestige of the Mar Lodge Estate. It is so nice to drive through the Mar Lodge Estate and not see Townhouse development sites at all. What you will see though are family homes on lovely big blocks and lots of trees. Windy Hill is a beautiful pocket as well, not sure if single dwelling covenant applies to Windy Hill area as well. The single dwelling covenant in the Mar Lodge Estate is certainly rare these days but extremely attractive. Essendon simply is the "best of the best".

The school has been an excellent choice for us, and we are absolutely delighted with the sense of community in the local area. Very much an area that looks for for one another.

"Victorian and Edwardian charm"

Recently back from living in London, and as our kids were nearing school age, we needed pick a suburb that would provide the highest standards in education as well as social and networking opportunities for myself and my husband.

With all the unsympathetic development going on around the inner eastern suburbs of Melbourne we decided to look at the Moonee Valley area as this was recommended by friends that had recently moved there from Kew.

We found the most beautiful Edwardian home on a large block in Essendon and fell in love! The neighbours are the most wonderful and welcoming people you could ever hope to live next to . . . we're so lucky to have found such a perfect spot in a perfect area.

Our kids have now both started at Penleigh & Essendon Grammer School (PEGS) and the we are delighted with the exceptional level of education, teaching staff, and student facilities.

In short, we extremely glad to have moved into Essendon and can't imagine a better place to live.

Great for

  • Edwardian architecture
  • Victorian architecture
  • Penleigh & Essendon Grammer (PEGS)
  • Close to Public Transport
  • Great food
  • Holds it's value
  • Quality schooling options
  • Fletcher Street nearby Cafes

Not great for

  • Dont want to leave
  • Expensive to buy in

"Great inner suburb option!"

Recently moved into Essendon from Moonee Ponds. The major change from the 2 close proximity suburbs is that the general character of the Essendon houses is more late Victorian. I am also pleasantly surprised by the street widths and lot sizes for this inner city suburb.
Highlights of this area is it's close proximity to multiple public transport options for young professionals working in the city, great schooling options for families, great shopping options being short drive to Moonee Ponds, Keilor Rd, Brunswick, Flemington and Footscray. Luckily the prices aren't too inflated yet as compared to the more asian dominated suburbs such as Box Hill, Glen Waverly and North Balwyn.
Overall I would say this is one of the best inner Melbourne suburbs to raise a family in.

  • Close to Public Transport

  • Holds it's value

Having just moved into a new apartment on Mt Alexander Rd, I absolutely blown away with the shopping and cafe options - all fantastic for a young (20-something) single to get out and meet new (and very welcoming) people.

I'll be here for the long haul :-)

"Fabulous lifestyle"

In my opinion, the best parts of Essendon are between Cooper Street and Lincoln Road - this takes in Mar Lodge Estate and some other prestigious streets that surround the estate.

Very close to trains and tram stop as well as an elevated pocket toll so many homes have city views of they are built up.

Expensive to buy into, and people rarely leave so the hardest part is actually finding a property on the market to buy into. If you do get a chance to experience living in Essendon, I doubt you'll ever leave.

  • Friendly neighbourhood

"One of Melbourne's best"

Having grown up in the inner east of Melbourne (Kew and Canterbury), I have fond memories growing up in a leafy area with friendly neighbours.

Now that I am about to raise children I want the same for them however the Kew/Canterbury pockets are now changed and not where I want my children to be raised.

Lucky for me my partner and I recently acquired a property in Essendon where we are most delighted with our new home, beautiful streets, friendly neighbours, and high achieving schools. Being one of the original suburbs of Melbourne, the architecture of the homes in the area reminds me of where I grew up . . . better still, it has retained it's charm and character (unlike some of the inner east).

It's clear to see why they call it the Toorak of the inner north-west. We love it!!

The choice for schools is second to none. Private or public, the are both high achieving. Oh, and as for architecture, simply divine.

"Never leaving!"

Having only lived in Essendon for less than a year, my partner and I have already made the decision that we’ll never leave this incredible area. Not only does it offer some of Melbourne’s leading schools (private and public) but Essendon also provides a high level of quality and diverse restaurant/cafe options on Buckley St, Mt Alexander Rd and Keilor Rd . . . spoilt for choice!
We spend most evenings exploring the local area, whether that’s checking out the local pubs or just admiring the exquisite architecture of the Edwardian and Victorian homes on an evening stroll through the very safe and inviting streets.

Jellis Craig Moonee Valley

"Essendon - The jewel of the north!"

Moonee Valley’s largest and generally most affluent suburb, Essendon spans a sizeable area bordering Brunswick West and Pascoe Vale South to the east, Moonee Ponds to the south, Niddrie to the west, and Strathmore to the north. With its combination of quality housing, excellent recreational facilities, leading education institutions, public transport and array of shopping options, Essendon is the preferred choice for many families and is only 7-10 kilometres from the CBD. Architecturally, the area’s development spans nearly a century from the fine Victorian and Federation homes around Essendon Station / Windy Hill, the classic Californian Bungalows around the Mar Lodge vicinity, through to the 50s and 60s brick-veneers nearer Hoffmans Road. Although exhibiting a vast difference in styles, most Essendon homes have one thing in common – generous land components. Not an exact rule, but the family-friendly streetscapes of Essendon usually contain far bigger blocks than their Moonee Ponds or Ascot Vale counterparts. Specific highlights of Essendon include some of Melbourne’s most renowned private schools including Penleigh and Essendon Grammar, Lowther Hall and St. Columba’s Catholic College. Recreational areas include Woodlands and Buckley Parks. Trams, trains and buses provide excellent public transport options whilst easy access to the Tullamarine Freeway and Citylink allow fast transit to the city or airport. Shops and cafés are also in abundance around Essendon North Village and Essendon Station in particular.
