We are relocating from Perth to Melbourne, Footscray - family friendly and safe?

Been looking online to purchase a property in Footscray (well priced for our budget). What is everyone's opinion for a young couple with 2 babies. I like to walk a lot and we are very outdoorsy family. Is this suburb safe to walk, jog or go to cafe strip without being bothered or scared. Thanks in advance

My partner and I just moved here. I'm a young female so safety is a priority for me - I like to go for walks after dark and mostly get around on foot. I live next to West Footscray station but often walk home from Footscray after dark and I haven't felt unsafe at all. There's a lot of pedestrian activity in the central Footscray area and the residential streets are quiet (there are always people around though - I've noticed it's usually young professionals, middle-aged and elderly people) so no problems there - nobody's come up to me asking for money or anything (a teen boy once said hello to me and winked, I awkwardly avoided eye contact - that's the worst that's happened so far!).

I'm quite outdoorsy as well, as is my brother who also lives in the area. The bike paths along Cross Street are excellent for bike riding/running/walking/whatever and I've noticed most of the people who walk past tend to have children, so it's quite family-friendly in that sense. The lovely parks along the Maribyrnong would also appeal to you, and the Reading Room cafe in Vic Uni is a great place to get coffee before going for a nice walk along the river.

I've felt more unsafe in popular suburbs like Brunswick. The area is the opposite of desolate - it's very lively and there's so much vitality. If you have young children I'd recommend West Footscray as it's a little quieter, leafier and there are more sporting and park facilities around. I'm sure your kids would make great use of the football oval!

You would do well to buy/live in Footscray, good community feel, plenty of shopping/markets/schools (if you have young ones) parks etc. Close enough to CBD if you ride a bicycle with excellent dedicated bike paths, as well as ample public transport.
