Update: since posting that comment I have recalled that several years ago I read a news article about the desperate lengths to which parents were going in order to get their children into private schools. It stated that one woman had rung up a Melbourne private school and said that she was planning to have a baby in 18 months' time, and asking if she could put the child on the waiting list in the meantime. So even within weeks of conception might not be soon enough. Best to speak with people who have children at these schools already in order to find out what the secret is.

Ideally within three weeks of conception. But with these sort of private schools, if you get on the phone to the school the moment you're out of the delivery ward and can confirm that the baby is a boy (as it will need to be for Scotch) then, if you have him officially registered on the waiting list the moment the birth certificate is lodged, with all the t's crossed and i's dotted, and also have the right connections and live in the right suburb, you might just get him in for the start of prep. But maybe put him on the waiting lists of a few other schools just in case.
