"Heavenly Hawthorn"

Hawthorn East is a great place to live with its ample amenities, location & friendly character.
The well-preserved historic homes & tree lined hilly streets make Hawthorn East one of the best! For a standard 3-bedroom house, you can expect to pay approx $750 per week.

"Convenient. Space is a commodity"

The upside to living here is you only need to travel about 5km maximum for any product or service you need. Even niche things. Getting onto the freeway is pretty easy. Outbound or over to the south east is straight forward, haven't tried driving inbound so can't comment. There's about three train stations in easy reach and trams. It feels pretty safe.

I'm knocking off a star because driving here is terrifying and it seems to be grid lock about 90% of the time. I suggest anyone planning to move here takes a defensive driving course first. The problem being a huge amount of cars and pedestrians at almost all hours. You constantly need to head check in about 6 directions twice before making a decision. You also can't always turn onto a main road in the direction you need and need to turn into the wrong direction turn into a side street and do a uturn (well I do this because it's a lot safer) Also be prepared for the majority of lights to not have a turn signal and to be "give way". Do whatever you can to NOT drive on Glenferrie road.

Good for people who prioritize convenience. I recommend for working proffessionals, families, fashion conscious, students.

Not good for people who like a slower pace or lots of space.

Errrhm just have to correct...the first paragraph is accurate but the last sentence is an over exaggeration. Driving is difficult sometimes due to rude drivers and at peak hours roads leading out of Melbourne, and around Camberwell experience quite long lines of traffic. Grid lock no...the traffic flows after 5-10 mins of waiting at the worst times. 90% of the time the traffic is fine. Watch out for busy Camberwell The Well shopping mall.

Disagree with hawkresident agree with TA about driving and congestion in Hawthorn East. Bad little drivers who most likely didn't learn to drive here. Lots of them!

"Melbournesque"

Melbournesque – some charming historic architecture - Edwardian, Victorian &1920s, leafy streets, multiple parks, good cafes (Lights in the Attic on Camberwell Rd is my favourite) & retail all contributing to a “village” feel circa 7 km from the CBD. Although it could be argued that the presence of large commercial premises e.g. Coles head office work is n’t ideal in a residential suburb. Residents can also easily access the nearby attractions of Hawthorn & Camberwell e.g. Rivoli theatre & Camberwell food market. While its access to a railway station is not “central” within the suburb - Auburn station being located on its northwest border & Camberwell station on its northeast – trams (routes 70, 72 & 75) are an alternate for CBD access. It’s a suburb that appeals to a broad demographic inc. families, young professionals & downsizers. This broad buyer appeal has resulted in consistently high capital growth for houses which looks set to continue relative to the performance of the general Melbourne market. "High on a Hill"

Friendly, funky and holding its own, Hawthorn East is a small but spirited local prized by families, professionals and golden-agers. Well-preserved historic mansions, iconic Australian head offices, progressive developments with integrated shopping hubs and happening local hauntes, the green rolling hills of Hawthorn East have something for everyone. You’’ll never be too far from what you need with Glenferrie Road and Burke Road shopping strips on either side, Tooronga Shopping Village, Blood Orange Specialty Foodstore and favourite local eateries that include Mr & Mrs Anderson, East End, Lights in the Attic, Pizza Religion and St. Cloud Street Eating House, to name just a few. Experience the open green spaces offered by Anderson Park admired for its breathtaking panoramic City views, Cato Park, Victoria Rd Reserve and Fritsch Holzer Park each boasting sparse open areas for play and/or a peaceful reprieve to begin or end each day.

"Brilliant place for families and professionals"

We lived in Camberwell for a few years and loved it. It's a brilliant suburb which has nearly everything you need: Decent shopping strip, indoor fresh food market, great restaurants, good schools, lot of parks, excellent library, train station and tram links. The only thing I'd say it's missing is a decent wine bar or gastro pub.

Another plus is it's really close to CBD.

A massive issue is it's very expensive to buy.

"Fairmount Rd Hawthorn East"

Although radically changed over the last thirty years probably for the worse. Was renowned for it's multitude of original 1920's Red brick Californian bungalows of 1920-22. Regretably a number demolished to make way for some pretentious 2 storey mansions which are too large for the street. Some have had another storey added very well others not. Garden makeovers have been both poor and good with unsympathetic fencing.
However the street was cut through in 1921 on the Stonyhurst Estate. Originally a 2 storey mansion stood on the current site of 5 and 5A demolished in 1940. opposite stands Fairmount House originally Auburn Villa
Owned in my day by the Bills Thompson.'s.The street therefore has much historicity the huge plane trees dating from 1921 and must be retained at all cost. The street overall is a very desirable one.Miami st regretablly also is not faring too well under a rebuilding programme. Wiseman's "Athol" of 1873 still stands at number 6 but has been desiccated
By unauthentic work.It was originally an early colonial residence built for William Cleverdon onetime Mayor of Hawthorn. Concern should be given as to what may become of this once charming street if development is to proceed unchecked.there seems to have been little height control over buildings. "Perfect for families of any age"

Excellent kindergartens, schools and a fabulous Swinburne Uni campus.
Shopping at either Camberwell or Hawthorn offers great variety. With plenty of cafes and restaurants, the Rivoli, Sunday Market, parks and bookshops aplenty, there is always somewhere to go and something to do.
Close to trains, trams, the freeway - East Hawthorn has certainly been great for our family over the years.

"Relaxed living without heading too far out."

Hawthorn East is close to the city and has a lovely green feel to it. Tree lined streets and character homes makes this a great place to be.
There are some good parks close by to walk the dog or take the kids out to run free for a bit.
The area is well serviced by supermarkets and other shops so you shouldn't have to go far to get what you need. However some of the shops aer expensive so it may be better to look further afield for shops.
Public transport services the area pretty well with a number of trams in the area. As a result if you are in streets close to the tram it can get busy with parking as it makes a convenient spot for others around to park to catch the trams into the CBD.
A good area for families and retirees.
