Do we need state governments!

Having recent been through some planning permit issues with my local council, I was told it had to also be viewed by the State Government body, and yes there would be another fee on top of the local council fees.

This got me thinking - why do we have state governments at all. Local government is fine for handling local issues and federal should be able to make decisions for the states (without obstruction).

I think you can get away with this in a country of only 200 million people.

Imagine the savings if we removed all of those politicians!

We might need them but I don't want them - always wasting taxpayers time and money arguing about things they should just get on and fix.

I'd love to see them go. I would then pump that money into more local governments who really need it.

we need to democtratize our education, health and transport. it's a joke how we are from the same country and have different standards in diff states. That's SOOOO 200 years ago. Down with state gov and up with local governments and 1 federal govt to control the $$$$.

Currently we use them and have to abide by what state govts do. I am strongly in favour of regional local governments and metropolitan local governments to be created ,be it in a provincial form in regional areas.
When the states are abolished it is paramount that the focus or issues that are unique to the state metro/country areas be not lost.
Currently we operate in 2008 with 4 levels of government local, state, federal and international. We do need to change there are to many.

We could get rid of them for many things - a national approach to schools, hospitals etc would be better for everyone instead of these endless fights about power between state and federal governments and the differences between the states.
