Is the city safe at night?

Anybody been in the city lately? All I hear is news about bashings and muggings -would you be comfortable with kids?

This thread talks about Melbourne being dangerous (or how it isn't)

I personally think it is only dangerous if you put yourself in a stupid situation. Yes there are freak accidents, but on a global scale, Melbourne would have to be one of the safest cities in the world.

That may be true AJ, but if I was your mother I would say stay out of the city at night. Why take the chance that you might become the freak situation when something happens.

I don't think you're going to be taking your kids to a strip club on King St (or maybe I'm wrong) so you should be fine! Many streets in the city are lovely at night. Little Bourke St in Chinatown for example is full of people and feels very safe.

The cbd is generally ok.
It does get pretty quiete later at night especially on weekdays.
shops only close somewhat late on friday nights only.
They close very early by world standards every other day.
So once that happens youre unlikely to see many families roaming around the streets.
Alot of people on the streets youll encounter later at night will be young that have probably been drinking.
So it can feel a bit more edgy.
Stay away from unlit streets.
Theres only really 2 or 3 streets in the cbd that might be busy.
Namely Swanston and bourke streets.
The rest of the city can be pretty deserted especially late at night.
Theres certainly a problem with drugs.
When you see pre paid taxi fares after 10 pm.
And though this is more of a problem in the suburbs. Pre paid refuelling of your car after a certain hour in some petrol stations .
You know theres a problem with crime.
And I disagree. I dont think Melbourne is one of the safest cities at all.
I find the majority of cities I travel to safer thsn Melbourne.
Even the cities in Vietnam which I just visited felt safer.
And were talking about a poor country.

I live in the CBD and do not feel safe. There are so many homeless, drug affected, mentally unstable people. Lots of unpredictable things can happen anytime so I feel hypervigilant a lot of the time, watching out for potential dangers. Melbourne has really changed. There is a stress and tension here that didn't exist so much 10 years ago. I don't recognize my city anymore.

Hi, I lived in the city and never felt afraid. I lived in an apartment complex, made alot of friends, very close community. Everyone helped each other and security to the building was amazing.
