Sydney to Melbourne

We are a a young family of three (husband, myself and 18 months old) who will be moving to Melbourne from Sydney (lower north shore).
Our budget is $720 per week and the areas we are looking at are Northcote, Thornbury, Alpington, Fairfield and Ivanhoe. Other possible areas are Coburg (I was told it's not family friendly?), Ascot Vale, Rosana, Macleod and Bentleigh. What are your thoughts about these places and do you have other recommendations?

I've heard fantastic things about Ascot Vale, especially with regards to family lifestyle and value for money. Ivanhoe is great too. Bentleigh is the complete other end of those areas but also great for families. All are great suburbs!
