Which is better in Melbourne - near west or far east?

Noble Park - 161st
Endeavour Hills - 279
Yarraville - 58th

Footscray - 37th - very affordable & only 1 station away from the CBD

I moved from Sydney's Northern Beaches (Manly) and have to say inner west. I work in the far southeast (Clayton).
Inner West: will be like Sydney's inner west in 10-15 years time. 10 minutes from CBD (train - 3-5 stops), significant property price rises due to city proximity, 10 minutes from beach, 20 minutes to airport, next to freeways that lead to Sydney / Canberra and Adelaide. Large parks, each with kid's rides, etc. Empty beaches (unheard of in Sydney). What is lacking is people in parks and trees along roads / on properties.
South-East Melbourne: It's like living in Penrith / Wollongong / Central Coast and working in Sydney. Large blocks of land, although subdivisions are taking their toll. Lots of people and trees. Poor public transport relative to inner city. My main driver for moving out of Sydney was the endless commutes! Why move to another city if you are going to be stuck in traffic while trying to get anywhere? So I opted out of Rowville / etc, moved to the inner west and in 3 years my property has gone up 50%. My kids go to a posh school and I don't have to pay Toorak property prices for this privilege.

I too believe that the eastern suburbs of Melbourne are far better for families. They already have great facilites such as sporting grounds, parks and gardens, as well as a greater coverage of public transport and other infrastructure such as hospitals, medical centres, schools and shopping centres. It is generally better serviced due to the fact that it has been established for a longer period of time. Ferntree Gully is the best area out of the suburbs you have listed. Endeavour Hills is OK in areas although you need to pick your area. However, Sunshine and Tullamarine are not areas I would consider.

For a family, definitely Eastern suburbs. It's so safe, quiet and clean with lots of fantastic parks.
