"Green, Friendly and Innercity. What more could you ask for?"

MITCHELTON is currently socially considered a developed hub of Brisbane's inner north. Despite the negative irrelevant reviews, this review is written by a citizen who has lived in Mitchelton since 1998 and has spent my childhood here. This suburb is very green and full of nature, everywhere you look you can view luscious areas and leafy properties which gives a feel that you are not in the hustle and bustle of urban society yet also being within a close proximity of The City. Mitchelton is also a friendly and customarily a crime free area, perhaps there are on seldom occasions one or two negative occurrences each year, but that may also be the case for high profile suburbs such as Hamilton and Ascot.

Mitchelton is also very close to The City. I live about seven kilometres linear to The City and on an off-peak trip, it took me only twelve minutes to travel there by car. Public tranport is also widely available in many modes across this suburb with bus and train services constantly running inbound, outbound and in many other directions. Shopping and dining is also popular and simple in Mitchelton as there are multiple places to purchase products and services to match everyones living needs. Also this suburb has many district services which those from surrounding suburbs must use because it is only available in hubs across Brisbane, i.e. Medicare, Private Health Shopfronts, RSL etc.

Mitchelton truely is a wonderful suburb for middle class and upper middle class residents of Brisbane.

"Great place to live"

We've lived here for 2 years. It is central to multiple shopping locations, parks, great schools and only a 20 minute drive to the CBD.

"Great place for family and work in city"

After witnessing soaring house prices, I made the decision to relocate to Mitchelton. It stands out as one of the last affordable places to reside, particularly for those employed in the inner city but desiring a high-quality living experience. The suburb offers the convenience of being around a 20-minute drive from the city during working hours, and the public transport system is exceptionally efficient. Having access to trains, in particular, adds an extra layer of convenience to daily commuting.

"I heart Mitchelton!"

I moved to Mitchelton almost a year ago and love it. I’ve lived in loads of other Brisbane suburbs and Mitchelton is by far the friendliest, most community focused and safest area of the lot!

There’s farmers markets, parks, walking tracks, a monthly food truck event, loads of cafes and plenty of easy access shopping. The only thing that was missing for me is nightlife, but there’s now three cool places I can go for evening drinks on Blackwood St - winning!!

The public transport is also great, with buses and trains running regularly. I also never have to worry about finding a park at the train station.

The only thing that bugs me about Mitchelton is peak hour on Wardell St/Samford Rd. It’s not your Melbourne or Sydney peak hour, but there are certainly delays at these times.

"A well serviced suburb with a mix of housing types"

Drugs and Gang violence? I have no idea where this occurs in Mitchelton. This suburb is hardly the gritty back streets of Compton L.A or Upton, Baltimore. I've lived in Mitchy for eight years and have never directly experienced or witnessed anybody else being subjected to drugs and violence. I walk >1 KM to and from the train station each day and have done so for years without encountering anything unsavory.

Mitchelton is well serviced by many amenities, including

A functioning high street - not many suburbs in Brisbane have a dedicate high street. Mitchelton's is becoming more sophisticated with some lovely cafes, delis, hairdressers, medical and job finding businesses popping up
A medium sized shopping centre with free parking
Modern train and bus infrastructure with regular services
Easy access to the longest continuous bike path in Brisbane (Kedron Brook Bikeway)
A well run council library
Centrelink service centre
Good mix of public and private schools
A short drive to escape the city at Samford, Mt Glorious and Mt Nebo

The suburb has a great mix of housing types, units, townhouses, federation style, modern, post war cottages.

Minus 1 star because:

Samford Road can be very congested
Low level train crossings cause traffic delays
Some parts of Mitchelton are in a low frequency flight path (noise)
Army Barracks can cause local traffic issues
The public high school is not as well regarded as Ferny Grove and The Gap

I am glad I am not the only person who was surprised about the mention of drugs and gangs. Having been a resident of Mitchelton for nearly 7 years, I have never witnessed anything of the sort. Thanks for taking the time to write a detailed and balanced review.

"Fantastic Family Suburb"

We have lived here for 6 years and have noticed year on year growth. The suburb is really developing and its easy to understand why with the ease of transport, access to good schools, parks, shopping and cafes. It is really family friendly and the neighbours are lovely. We love going to the Farmer's markets and evening Mitchie Makers markets. There is a fantastic local park run and acess to sporting grounds and pools are excellent. There are shopping precints in three directions and Brookside Shopping Centre, which is being modified and renovated is easy to access. The local primary school is good and improving every year. The secondary school needs improvement (in my view) but there is good access to private schooling. We haven't experienced any crime.

Great for

  • Growing suburb. Good capital growth
  • Access to transport is easy.

Not great for

  • Not much night life
  • There isnt a huge Westfield. This might be a pro or a con depending on the person.

"One of the best suburbs in Brisbane"

I relocated to Mitchelton from Sydney and landed in this beautiful suburb out of luck rather than any research on my behalf, but could not be happier. This is an affordable suburb with a great village feel, close to shops, schools and other necessities. Close to the CBD with frequent trains & buses what more can you ask for. I can see house prices increasing here significantly over the next few years.

"Mitchelton - families / retirees and close to CBD"

After living in Mitchelton my whole life, i can now understand and appreciate why so many people flock to open homes when a property comes on the market for sale. Not only is it family orientated, it still has the friendly old school spirit with a wave or a smile as you drive or walk past. I certainly can't fault Mithchelton and if its not on your list or radar when purchasing your next property, you certainly will be missing out for so many reasons.

"The great North West"

I have lived in and around the North West all of my life. I have also been to other places and lived in other suburbs but have always come back. I do have a soft spot for the area and I might be a little biased but nowhere else I have lived compares to here.
The one thing you immediately notice about living in the North West, especially compared to the south, is the lack of petty crime and the absence of anything that would point towards it.
The best suburbs: Enoggera, Mitchelton, Keperra, Everton Park and the Hills district. The suburbs closer to the city like Ashgrove and Newmarket are also fantastic but are out of most peoples price range.
I love this area and I think I will always live here.

I have to disagree. After living in the north west as well for most of my life, there were many times where we & neighbours were victims of petty crime. Newmarket being one of the most offending areas.

I guess habits and routines can laziness to secure your property and home can appeal to happy fingers....
But y'all should try the south now that crime but people still happy even when broke so much crime yet so much love too..
All I can say is be wise with ya goods no need to boast and flaunt it be humble petty fingers see that and prey on you!!!

"Could not be happier"

We rented two places in different parts of mitchelton before we decided to buy. i have lived and worked in severl cities across the world and visited many more. I would not swap mitchelton for any. We have a young family, 4 chickens a whole lot of space; friendly neighbours who would help you out at the drop of a hat; a community that stops to talk to each other. Parks, childcare facilities, excellent dining opportunites and abundant shopping and a monthly farmers market. I work in the city and drive in 15 minutes if i get up early or catch the train in peak hours -which takes 20 minutes. There is a good mix of long term residents and newer arrivals to freshen things.
We are extremely happy in mitchelton, and have made many friends who are equally so.

"Major Activity Centre in an excellent location"

There are very few suburbs in SEQ that match Mitchelton in way it is located within Brisbane and what it has to offer. Only a few kilometres from the City, 2 railway stations, a frequent bus to the city and buses to other suburbs. A major shopping centre. A shopping strip. Several amenities. Parks and sporting clubs all around. Ambulance station incase you like to have them quick. Safe. You will find it very hard to find a suburb which has all that in Brisbane.

The fact that the prices are relatively high is a good indicator that people disagree that it is too far out. i have lived in serveral world cities and visited many more. Would not swap Mitchelton with any other place . Great for families, great community and neighbourhood. Comments in relation to traffic are overstated. How many places in the world can you drive into cbd work off peak in 12minutes. Peak in 25 mns. Mount Nebo and glrious in 20minutes . Sunshine coast in under an hour. if you cant hack sitting 25 minutes in a car to go to work in the cbd during peak . you can spend 20 minutes on a train. or get up earlier and finish earlier
it appears strange that the detractors of mitchelton dont seem to live there. comments about traffic, being too far out etc - are not things you will find anybody in mitcheton complaining about.
