"Where are the neighbours??"

Having lived on this street for a while now, the neighbours have never shown any sign of wanting to talk to us or get to know us. When we first moved in there were a few waves and "hellos" in passing, but that is as far as things went.

Existing residents who seem to have been living here a while only talk to other people who they have known for a while. The friendliness previously talked about seems to only be for a certain few and definitely not newcomers!

The afternoon parking for school pick-up can be a pain too, especially if you need to go out or return during that 40 minutes. Parents could show more consideration when picking up children from the nearby schools by parking round the corner where there's more room and less likely to block people from leaving their house.

It's hard when you're the new resident, but what can you do to start the conversation?

The thing is - we have been the ones who initiated the "hellos" and waving to the neighbours - every time except once. If it's not been when we're heading off somewhere, the neighbours we have tried this with head back to their house, or whatever they were doing pretty quickly. We see long-term residents talking to each other on the street, but seemingly no interest in newer neighbours.

Our experience of this street has not been the positive as suggested by the previous reviewer.

Hi Mojo, I am surprised at your version of Neilian retreat..we moved out 2 months ago after living there for nearly 7 years. We always waved to anyone who lives in the street, people moved in across the road from our place a couple of months before we left, I introduced myself to lady there not long after they moved in, if I was out the front in the garden when they were leaving or coming home I always waved & said "hi" if they were in hearing distance..
Some times people give you the impression that they don't want to get friendly with the neighbors .....so in that scenario you tend to back off.
The couple who live at number 2, would have to be the best neighbors around, they are always there when anyone needs them, I could give you a run down on all the people who live in that street......there would not be too many negative remarks.
Maybe if your feeling a little left out, next time you see someone out in the front garden you need to go introduce yourself & you'll be surprised at the response you will get from these residents.
As for the Mums picking up the kids after school..........well, that's another story, I could tell you of some of the problems that that has caused over the years we spent there......but I still would give anything to have taken our neighbors with us when we moved.
Give them another go & take the time to introduce your self to them.........you won't be sorry.

"I lived in Neilian Retreat for 6 years"

I lived here for 6 years as a single mum. The neighbours were so helpful and supportive. I really miss living there.

I still visit the street each night to pick up my children from school. All the gardens are kept well except one on the corner which has never changed in 10 years.

A sample of kindness in the street. I just moved in with two young children and my ourside blinds was broken. I came home to find one of the kind neighbours across the street had came over and fixed it for me.

lovely street

"Good street to raise a family"

Our street is a great place to raise a family as we are only meters away from, kinder, primary and high schools. Every one in the street is garden proud & keep gardens & lawns tidy( except one) At drop off & pickup school times, things get a bit hectic, but only for about15 minutes. We have parks & lakes close by...ideal for the afternoon stroll.
Major shopping center is 10 minutes drive, smaller centers are closer, Restaurants......well, what ever you like, we have it close by, Berwick is like a outer suburb "Lygon st", we have heaps of really good eating places here.
A public hospital as well as a private hospital are also only a stones throw away, as, is the freeway, making it a short drive to the ,city,& airport.

All in all....A great street to live in.

We have lived in Neilian Retreat for 6 years, we have great neighbours that out weigh the 15 minutes of dropping off & picking up of the kids that attend the schools at the end of our normally quiet court.
We find Berwick in general, a fantastic suburb to live in, it has all the amenities that one could want, it's a tidy place, the main street shopping is like a country town, with lovely large old trees that line the street, a small grassed area in the main square is a nice place to sit and reflect on a nice sunny day..
In my life time I have lived in many suburbs, both this side of the City as well as the other side, ( my Mum was a bit of a Gypsy)...... but Berwick is where I intend to settle .

Yes, Balmainb, I will take a photo this week some time & list it.
