Reviews of Queenstown, TAS

"Finally moved to Queenstown!"

After all the helpful comments on this site we finally moved to Queenstown.
The locals are very friendly and welcoming to new residents too. Most people know each other which is nice, actually knowing my neighbors who regularly bring us fresh garden produce.
The Council does a great job working with the community to provide and maintain services. We didn't realise there were so many service available in Queenstown as most of the business and community events are only seen through Facebook.
There are some great schools in Queenstown and the business actually care about their customers. The West Coast Hospital in Queenstown also has great service, much more than we initially thought.
I almost forgot to mention there are heaps of cafes, restaurants and even a few taverns.

Looking for a home in Queenstown?

"So many investment and business opportunities"

We were lucky enough to purchase a property recently in Queenstown before the property market went crazy. Luckily there are so many investment opportunities , more so many business opportunities.
Whilst there is a diverse range of local business I have realised there is huge market potential for new business.
Local residents just don't seem to realise how easy it is to obtain a job locally and purchase a house. Mortgage repayments are only $160 per week and the investment yield can range from 8% - 16%.
The West Coast is an amazing place, the locals are friendly and it is such a unique environment.

"Mild summers and snowy winters"

Queenstown Tasmania is abundant in rugged untouched beauty.
The town itself is nestled in a valley at the bottom on Mount Owen and is home to about 2500 residents.
With the progression of the town more business and services are becoming available, making the town more livable and great place to invest in property.
Going against what others have said the price of local produce, goods and services are very reasonably priced.
There is so much to do from hiking, fishing, mountain biking, hang-gliding, dirt bike and 4wd trails, diving, visiting long forgotten towns and mines or even spending a relaxing day reading a book by the warmth of a fire.

"A nice little town that is slowly growing"

Queenstown is an old but cute town located 2 hours south of Burnie. I firstly mention Burnie as, like others have recommended, shopping online or up the coast if somewhat essential. Whilst Queenstown does have the local shops and amenities you require they are expensive. E.g, Food can be very expensive as can the local marketplace. The only hairdresser in town is always to busy for a booking that week and they are horrible at men's hair.
If you have children the local schools are not that great as their policies are old and misandrists.
The hiking is amazing, local BMX is fantastic and there are a plethora of 4wd and dirt bike tracks around too.

Properties are very cheap but get a building inspector before you buy, DON'T BUY A HOUSE WITHOUT VIEWING. THE REAL ESTATE CAN AND DOES USE OLD HOUSE PHOTOS TO MAKE THEM LOOK BETTER and any DIY renovations get from Bunnings as locally is extremely expensive.

Hello lovely people of Queenstown, I just have a question about getting shopping delivered from Burnie in the winter months..do they really drive all that way to deliver your shopping and I dont have a 4WD so will getting in and out be really bad during the winter in my 4 cylinder hatchback, thank you

There is rarely a day when mail is not delivered due to being snowed in. The mail delivery truck and drivers are just as rugged and diverse as the West Coast its self.
Almost every online store delivers to Queenstown. The only trouble new residents to the West Coast will have is finding a property to purchase or rent. Property prices are skyrocketing due to all the new investments and projects on the West Coast.

And what about the 4x4 question? I would like to know too pls. Is it essential to have a 4x4 to live in Queenstown?

Are you unemployed? I think a lot of unemployed people don't like Queenstown as there isn't much to do if your not into hiking, BMX, diving, or traveling. Queenstown is a great place for investment at the moment too.
The best thing to do in Queenstown is not to purchase anything from there, shop up the coast or online.

"A perfect town to retire in and for young families"

At first my wife and I were skeptic all about retiring in Queenstown, however the move has made us more financially stable so we can enjoy spending more time gardening, hiking and traveling around Tasmania.
Whilst Winter does last for 5 months Spring, Summer and Autumn are perfect. Food deliveries from Burnie in conjunction with our green house make living in Queenstown extremely affordable.

"A beautiful little town with a variety of business"

Queenstown is a beautiful small little town that has a variety of business to make life still enjoyable. Whilst the lifestyle is relaxed, business are still growing and strong.
Winters are stunning with snow capped mountain ranges and easily access to the snow less than 30 minutes away. Summers are amazing with warm tepid temperatures.
Queenstown is surrounded by huge lakes that offer picturesque camping locations and great fishing with a multitude of boat ramps. There are ample allocated hunting areas that offer a variety of game along with visible and hidden 4wd tracks.
The best kept secret in Queenstown is the hidden waterfalls and springs located very close to the town. The locals tend to keep them a secret though upon hiking the magnificent forests we came across beautiful hidden swimming springs.

"The best town to buy, invest and save money"

We recently moved to Queenstown from a larger city as we were sick of paying huge mortgage rates and living costs. We purchased a three bedroom house in Queenstown for only $110,000 that need very little work. Our monthly repayments are only $400! Rates, water and general costs are just as cheap allowing us to save a lot of money and eventually invest in another property.
Our children attend a catholic school that doesn't push religion on them and has great regional score results.
Like others have mentioned the snow capped mountains and hiking trails are great and cradle mountain is only a short 45 minute drive.
There is a growing number of local restaurants and cafes making the social scene comfortable and accommodating.

Queenstown has all the amenities you could require. Excellent child care services, modern library and research hubs and a great sense of community spirit.

"Poor council and roads though a beautiful town"

First off the council does nothing. The rates seem to go to paying council members, their vehicle's and the council building.
Queenstown's roads aree horrible mainly due to a business trucks ruining the roads who never make repairs.
The town is beautiful but could be amazing with a little fresh paint here and there.
Living expenses are cheap provided you shop up the coast.

"A great little town, though very sexist."

Queenstown is a great little town. The people can be friendly and the lush green mountains are picturesque but the town can be quite sexist towards both men and women.
There is females only netball and men's only football. So any man wanting to play the only other sport than football can't. The town also seems to have a predominantly female employment factor.
Other than the blatant sexism, the lifestyle can be cheap and rewarding provided you shop online and travel up the coast for food shopping.
As others have said the snow capped mountains can be very beautiful and summers are the perfect temperature not to hot or cold.

"A beautiful quiet little town - Council is useless"

If you are planning to move to Queenstown in Tasmania be well prepared. Whilst the snowy winters are beautiful you can be snowed in town with road closures. You really need a 4WD to access road when they are closed due to heavy snow fall.

Do you research and be prepared. Whilst it can be cheap, council rates are quite high, food prices are high and so is fuel. Shop in bulk at Coles / Woolworths and purchase bulk fuel in Zeehan.

So much to do and explore, from snowy capped mountains and hidden rivers to the warm sand dunes of Strahan, Queenstown is situated beneath the beautiful Mt. Owen.

"A beautiful small town with a few quirks"

Queenstown has its own unique small community, the locals are indifferent through friendly. The local Catholic Primary school seemed nice when we took the tour, everything was somewhat modern, though they said there are no male teachers, a school only run by females and no I'm NOT misogynistic, it just seem funny, borderline misandry to not have males at a school in this modern day and age with equal rights.

The IGA's are expensive so shop up the coast and the fuel is on average 0.20c per liter more expensive.

Hello everyone, this is a great thread. I am on my own in my 50s and want to move to west coast as I love the cold, snow etc. As I am retired I would like to know if it would be easy for me to make friends, through hobbies, volunteering etc, I am looking at Queenstown, Zeehan or Strahan but with Strahan to few rentals I think. I am use to being on my own but I would like to join in with the community, thank you

janec22

The West Coast towns are very community orientated. Lots of community events, fundraisers and clubs too volenteer at. Strahan rentals are generally priced quite high, Queenstown would have the best rental market. Queenstown also has better facilities such as West Coast District Hospital, the library hub and more shops, cafes and restaurants in general.

julias15

Thanks Jane for your reply much appreciated, sorry havent been on here for a year. I have now moved to tassie but still wanting to be able to rent somewhere private meaning I am sick to death of renting units with noisy walls and no private outside space. I will make a trip to Queenstown as check it all out, only worried about being snowed in and getting shopping!

"People from interstate treated badly"

Unwelcome by most locals, constant heavy rain, very poor tv reception even with antennae, no optus, water is brown, air smells mouldy/damp all the time, lots of crime - threatened when asked neighbour not to park on my lawn, had house damaged by vandals running trailer down the street for fun, broken into and goods stolen, gang of young people stealing from shop - only there 3 months, only IGA (very expensive), lack of good tradesmen, many home woodfires - we all suffered from respiratory complaints, including the animals. Vet said it was common in people not used to the smoke/who have asthma. Nothing to do except the pub. No jobs.

We have Optus and the reception is great. Queenstown has some of the most pure air on the West Coast and yes the winters are cold and rainy but the surrounding mountains covered with snow and areas to take the kids 15 minutes from town make the winters worth it.
There are always jobs for those who are actually looking. Moved here, 1 month later have a job.
I will agree that the IGA are expensive we have gotten around this by shopping Amazon pantry.

An interesting place with a great mix of people. Many moving from the Mainland who are renovating and are adventurous. A lot of artists here too and people seeking a calmer life. Some wonderful old homes and great renovators if your a tradie or handy.
Only negative is the way many dogs are treated, chained and left out in the cold by some unthinking people. A town undergoing transformation which makes a very small minority uneasy and resentful. However it's a great town with massive potential.

Would you say its easy to make friends, get to know people etc? Is the IGA there expensive as a shopping place?? Any help you could give would be great. Thanks

"Gem of a town on the rise"

This town is bloody awesome! I stumbled upon it about 3 years ago and have been visiting regularly. With lots of scenic places around and new art studios popping up everywhere, and the mine reopening soon, it’s a sure winner. It’s really more about the community feel that you get there than property prospects. It’s a place where people are real and genuine. People help eachother and that is hard to find nowadays. The tuff years Queenstown went through just made this sense of community stronger. Tourism has been improving greatly as well. Go visit if you haven’t been! That whole region is absolutely stunning! Pretty cold in winter but otherwise gorgeous!

I recently went to Queenstown to look at a property and stayed for a few days. (I'm from Sydney) - I found the locals were friendly, the Empire Hotel was the nicest place to be and eat at, great atmosphere, very cosy, drinks were put on a tab on first visit (very trusting). I felt very safe as police are aware of everyone in the area (stopped one of our group and said "I havent seen your face around here before" and had a friendly chat. Locals stop and have a chat (introduce themselves), loved the community the most - great to go back in time where neighbourhoods were a safe place to walk around in. Very happy, helpful people . Rained almost every day but had one beautiful sunny day where I walked around with a T-shirt which is pretty good for almost winter time.

"Queenstown .....Best kept secret..."

We researched & read every review & tidbit of information we could find on Queenstown we could get our hands on.

Some good ...a lot bad...I am pleased to say Queenstown is nothing like it is portrayed....It has far exceeded our expectations

We are so glad we didn't do a drive thru in Queenstown, as we would have looked at the run down homes on the decent into town and kept on driving, missing the fantastic opportunity Queenstown has become. You need to spend some time here to really get a feel for the place.... to experience the welcoming locals, an easier pace of life, the lack of traffic & crowds & view the snow capped mountains & some of the most beautiful scenery you will ever find.

It is unfortunate that many of the homes are rundown, but it wont stay that way ...with housing afffordability so high in the bigger cities people are embracing regional areas and the chance to renovate & have a lovely home for so much less.

Of course just like every other town there are some gorgeous old homes and some not so gorgeous.....!

Yes there are jobs here...the schools are good...medical services are good...you can get most things you need from the local stores ...or go for leisurely drives through breathtaking scenery to Burnie, Launceston, Hobart ect for great weekends away...shopping, fine dining and sightseeing with any larger purchases able to be delivered to your door at a very reasonable price.

So far we have enjoyed our move here & look forward to seeing our family & friends who suddenly can't wait to visit....

Work has never been a problem if your happy to give anything a go. I wish the council here would give the derelick houses away to people that would love to restore or rebuild cause I'd take a couple more. I've also come from a place where rain was presious and rain water tanks were a must, but here its in abundance. And the lush Manfern filled gardens get a free watering. "Queenstown - the hole of Tasmania"

Queenstown as a town is pretty to look at with a variety of shops and mostly friendly shop staff along with a few original locals, but it seems that Queenstowns cheap housing has brought the worst of Australians to the town and along with it all their problems. If you need tradesman work done you will pay the earth for a shoddy job if you can get anyone in the first place, if you need to buy building materials forget it unless you travel to Burnie or Hobart. The local cafes are doing a good job keeping Queenie going but it can be a trying and oppressive place, kids are arrogant and trail bikes can hoon past at 3am, some new locals think it is their right to help themselves to your belongings be it firewood or anything not locked away or bolted down, there is very little different class of people it all seems to be the low and lost class, tried it hated it, dont recommend it. Having said that the surrounding areas and lakes are beautiful and the place is steeped with history, great for a fly through visit but thats all.

"Picturesque and Friendly Locals"

I give this little town a good rating. The people of Queenstown are very friendly and the Empire Hotel are very accommodating and hospitable. I have been here for only weeks and its barely rained and as the local will tell you they do cloud seed and I find that strange considering that they already have high rain fall in the area. I love the look of the main street when you look up to see those mountains in the distance and I cant wait to see them when it snows (apparently it has been known to snow here from time to time).
The streets are safe for the children to walk around in and its the good old country exploring that keeps them entertained like riding bikes, fishing and just hanging about. The skate park it pretty good for those who dare and there are other activities available in the area for young and old although I will say communication in this department needs a little more attention. There needs to be a (physical) local notice board for things that are available to do in or around the area or activities taking place as I find it is hard to find out whats going on unless you know someone who is attending or word of mouth and sometimes that is too late..
All in all its safe friendly and a beautiful place to live.....Im going to try it :)

Excellent accommodation is available at the picturesque Penghana Lodge located in the foothills. Yes, it's cold, yes, there isn't much to do and it's hard to find a job, but Queenstown has a certain small town charm. In summer when I visited, there was a drizzle of rain and as you wind your way down the dangerous twisty road into the town, you could squint a little and imagine you're somewhere in a remote European mountain range.

The main draw car here is cheap properties. The town is of a significant size to start being self sufficient (i.e. will not disappear in a hurry) and over the years, houses are slowly being renovated and a new hospital confirms that it's a place of "some" growth. Jobs is the key..tourism seems to be the main draw card, perhaps a few more attractions would augment the railway.

I could live here...

"A backwards town..."

Great place to live if you like limited employment opportunities and freezing weather... otherwise, try settling somewhere else.

"Revegetating Barren Hills"

The hills around the mining town of Queenstown have been often described as a lunar landscape, and this is still true. The originally timbered hills were denuded by mining companies which needed timber to fuel their plants. This, combined with devastating fires and high rainfall, washed much of the topsoil off the hills. Revegetation attempts are being met with some success, and returning visitors of 30 years ago will certainly notice the change. Housing in the town is typical of a mining town. Transient populating and uncertainty of employment at the Mt Lyell Mine means little is done to beautify the homes or gardens. There is an excellent mining museum in town, and this is also where one can board the ABT Western Wilderness Railway for a ride to Strahan. When accommodation is full in Strahan (for the Gordon River Cruises), Queenstown takes the overflow, or those wishing to have a cheaper option.
