Reservoir

"Lots to like, with some down sides....but that is changing fast"

Many positives about living here - there are a lot of houses and units at very reasonable prices, and it's not too far from the city (~30 min train ride). Reservoir is gentrifying fast with a lot of young couples, families and students moving into the area. All of my neighbours have been lovely people. La Trobe, RMIT and Preston market are nearby.

That said, it is still a bit of a dodgy suburb - the northern side of Reservoir has a particularly bad reputation. The south side is nicer, Edwardes Park and Edwardes Lake are a plus but you still want to try and avoid housing comission units. Even in the south side, you see dodgy looking people a lot and there are frequently police at the station. There is some crime, mostly theft - in my 4 years here, my car got broken into once. I (young female) never personally felt unsafe walking home at night and saw other women walking home on their own so it isn't a highly dangerous place, but you have to be cautious. I would some it up as - it's not the safest area, but it doesn't live up to its grizzly reputation these days.

Ashwood

"A convenient and lovely place to live"

I rented in Ashwood for 3-4 years. One big pro is the location; it's close to Princes Hwy and Monash Fwy, Chadstone is right nearby, as is Holmesglen station and, of course, Holmesglen TAFE. There are a lot of Asian groceries and restaurants in the area which is a plus. It's a fairly quiet area too; no nightlife to speak of, although the Matthew Flinders pub is nearby. It's not the most safe area - I live well off the main road and have never had issues, but my friend who used to live on Warrigal Rd got her place broken into, so think twice about getting a place on a main street. The one other thing to be cautious of is that there are some housing commission places in the area; we were unlucky enough to live in a block of four units, one of which was a housing commission unit (which we didn't realise until some terrible bogan neighbours moved in with whom we had trouble), and apparently there are some housing commission places around the station and Power Street, I'm not sure exactly where. I've been told that people have heard gunshots coming from there and saw in the news recently that a man was shot to death in some commission housing in Ashwood. I would say that most of Ashwood is pretty safe, but just make sure you're not moving into the housing commission area!

Great for

  • Close to Shopping Centre
  • Great access to public transport, and major freeways

Not great for

  • Some commission housing

Having being born in and lived in (and still am near to...Chadstone) Ashwood for much of my 55 years of adult existence,I can't understand what this previous writer is on about! Virtually the whole of Ashwood is a housing commision suburb!!

Power street??? I guess this person means Power Avenue. On the real and positive,Ashwood is brilliantly located, but Warrigal rd is way to busy these days.

There are more astute reviews further down;ignore the rubbish above.

Correction, I did mean Power Avenue, not Power Street. Aside from this I'm not sure exactly what about my review DarrylJ has a bee in his bonnet about.

DarrylJ
DarrylJ

Correction, street, avenue.,since it is the main through road in the area....not similar. No "bee in the bonnet",just a bulltish detector.By the way, what percentage of the housing in Ashwood was housing commission?

Someone who had hung around for a bit,but knew little.Read the original post.

Sorry KatyaP.You lived in Ashwood for,"3-4 years",and you couldn't figure out the name of the main road was not Power street, but Power Avenue?? Only my post made you realize this? Stop wasting everyone's time.

Silence....Ashwood is great;read the real posters below.

KatjaP

If the only criticism was that I made a mistake with Power Avenue, that's fair enough and I corrected myself. It's not "bullshit" that I didn't know the exact name of that road; I've never had to use it, only ever travelled past it and seen it at a glance. I consider the main road through the area Warrigal Road, which I use frequently. I don't know the percentage of Ashwood that is housing commission, I haven't seen any statistics from the Dept of Housing. I've only relayed what I've seen and heard while I've been in the area.

Sorry Katya, there are two "halves" to Ashwood, divided by which road? Which part of Warrigal Rd. touches Ashwood Housing? Where did you live in Ashwood?People reading this might feel that you haven't lived there and are writing about it,for whatever reason.Your original post shows that you are afraid of "bogans" and "housing commission places",yet you can't even locate where they are;you have to contact the "Dept of Housing",(sic).

Katya swears, she lived in Ashwood for,"3-4"years (?),but can only name one road.Even her reference to "Princes Highway",(people 'round here call it Dandenong Road.) shows that she is "out of touch",with the area. Please read the more atute comments below.

To say 'Virtually the whole of Ashwood is a housing commision suburb!!' is ridiculous. On the left hand side of High St Rd, heading away from the city (e.g. side with Ashwood High) there is no housing commission at all. There are a few commission houses still left around Power Ave and Jingella, but most of Jingella is being sold and re-developed into large, new and expensive houses. There are 4 houses being rebuilt in that street alone right now.

ar7

Long ago, housing commission units were built on small blocks of land, on one side of High Street in the suburbs of both Ashburton and Ashwood. On the right side of High Street Road (Hilly side) and High Street respectively, traveling towards Glen Iris (or the City), there are NO Housing Commission units and the blocks are almost twice as large with much bigger houses, like any other suburb.
I have been a resident in Glen Iris, Ashburton and Ashwood for over 40 years.

My original post was to comment on Katya P who ostensibly knew nothing about Ashwood.Since you are unable to punctuate a sentence, and merely resort to abuse, one suspects you are Katya P's "friend".When you can explain what the,"left hand side of High St.Road heading away from the city means" (???), I would take your drivel seriously. Most of Ashwood,SOUTH of High st.rd. is still a commission suburb with the old commission houses toppling over on a regular basis.Crossing the train line via Power Ave.(not Street), into Chadstone,SOUTH of High st rd. (east? west? only andyqs "understands") there is still a substantial number of commission houses, all built in the 50's.My father died last year ,having lived in his house at 11 Allambi st. as a rental property for 67 years.Join your partner,Katya P,in the waste bin of stupidity.

Calm down peanut and re read my post. When did a house topple over? You talk rubbish. On the left hand side heading toward the city is pretty straight forward and if you cant work it out, it explains your level of intelligence (or lack thereof)

darryljohansen

Very abusive person.Still can't spell or punctuate.North of High Street Road is...North.Where is the city again? Houses get knocked down;do you not understand metaphoric language?

Oakleigh East

"A nice, quiet, friendly place to live"

I rented in Oakleigh East (on Dublin St) for about 2 years. It was largely a quiet area (although the early morning noise coming from the primary school did get a bit annoying!). It's a convenient location; it's close to Monash University, and Chadstone is not far away. Public transport options are many - you're near Princes Hwy with buses that will take you anywhere, and you can choose between Huntingdale and Oakleigh stations. The Oakleigh shops nearby have a strong Greek culture which is lovely. I always felt safe there. Obviously it's a quiet suburb so not great for those who like some nightlife, but it would be perfect for pretty much anyone else.

Great for

  • Quiet
  • Close to Princes Hwy. Monash Uni and public transport

Not great for

  • No nightlife
