South Morang

"Decent suburb that has become too busy and no longer that great value for money. Too far from the city but without the country feel."

South Morang is a pleasant suburb that is not as green and picturesque as suburbs like Doreen and even Mernda but has become too expensive and extremely busy. The problem is the developers who do not create a consistent look in the area. In Mernda and Doreen they have planted shrubs and trees and laid out the roads beautifully but in South Morang it has been very helter skelter. There are also very many power lines running through that are a real eyesore.

Great for

  • Clean and green
  • Train service, possible tram extension

Not great for

  • Become a busy thoroughfare
  • Needs to build more walking tracks
  • Needs to establish selective school
  • People keep to themselves

Craigieburn

"Used to be a nice suburb that is really going to the dogs"

I have a few friends here who want to move out but cannot because of the low property values. The problem is they are feeling unsafe. There are too many hoons, and children roaming the streets after midnight. My friend had here letter box kicked down five times and her front door mat has been stolen. People steal her seedling from her front yard when she plants them. So she is now very disappointed. Whenever I visit her I do see what she means.

To be fair Craigieburn has some nice pockets but you have to go through the rough parts to get there.

Great for

  • Fantastic Family Parks

Not great for

  • Feeling of being unsafe
  • Dirty unclean shopping area with spit on the ground
  • Hoons and renters with loud music and car noise
  • Houses so close to each other

Doreen

"Doreen is beautiful, quiet with lovely people and pretty good facilities"

I am from Switzerland. I moved to Doreen because it and its surrounds remind me of home. Also the people are very nice and friendly. I no longer work and live a retired life and this place is perfect for me. All my friends who visit me are always remarking how nice and quiet and picture perfect Doreen is.

Recently there have been big improvements in bus services and it is now very easy for me to travel anywhere in Melbourne by bus and then by train. It will be even nicer when in early 2019 the train arrives in Doreen and Mernda area.

When I have to travel by road it is sometimes quite congested but that is so everywhere in Melbourne, which is why I have started more and more using public transport.

Doreen has now two or three doctors and some nice coffee and cake shops. It has about 5 nice restaurants with very nice food. One of them has even live music at times.

I cannot say how much I love Doreen and feel at home and at peace here.

Everyday I enjoy walking my dog and meeting all the friendly and relaxed and polite people and I take in the undulating green countryside and think to myself how lucky I am to live here.

I normally dont write reviews or go on the internet so much but because some people wrote some not so things I felt I had to share my perspective.

Great for

  • Lovely and friendly people
  • Very safe and peaceful
  • Nice facilities
  • Urban development with a distinct country feel
  • Great mix of young and old that are community spirited
  • The existing and planned infrastructure is terrific and eliminates the need to go too far
  • Good access to parks
  • Lovely recreation areas
