Merrylands

"Convenient and multicultural"

I moved to Merrylands approx one year ago having purchased my first home (a unit) as a single person in late 2015. The local shopping centre (Stockland ) is a good size and has three grocery stores, three discount department stores, several clothes stores etc. Westfield Parramatta is only 3 km away if you want more variety.

Merrylands is well positioned for those using public transport. As I have only used the train, it is a short 10 min train ride to Parramatta and 40 min train trip to Town Hall/Sydney CBD.

There are several parks in Merrylands, which is excellent for active families, and these are well utilized by the public. I personally drive to Parramatta Park (this takes me 10 mins) to walk/run/cycle the 3.2 km scenic loop. Other amenities I use include the local heated pool and Merrylands library, which is a reasonable size.

Merrylands is very multicultural, and has many new migrant families. There is a variety of "ethnic" cuisines and grocers available.

I feel safe when I'm at the shops and walking to the train station (I live off a main road so it is well lit at night). I also feel safe in my unit block and have gotten to know most of my neighbors, by face at least.

One of the down sides of living in Merrylands is that the streets are not green or clean. There is often illegal dumping of furniture on the nature strip and the council pick up is only twice a year at this stage. Some of the unit blocks and houses are not well maintained. The council needs to focus on cleaning up and beautifying the streets to make it more livable.

Overall, I would recommend Merrylands as a good place to buy a unit/home due to its affordability and proximity to Parramatta and the Sydney CBD.

Great review and very accurate. Transport and shopping is great. But the people are disgusting and rude. The streets are filthy and not pretty. No one upkeeps their lawns and its a depressing sight.
