Melbourne (CBD)

"A grand old old city."

Melbourne has it all. A coastal city with nearly four million lucky people who live in an area that spans 50 miles. It is a city that offers absolutely everthing to everybody: shops and shopping centres, restaurants of all kinds, educational facilities - many of international standing, religious institutions of all kinds, mueseums, theatres of all kinds, markets of all kinds, parks of all kinds including the Botanical Gardens, sporting facilities of all kinds, public transport, nightlife and venues of all kinds, major hospitals, and the list goes on and on. The CBD is reflective of Melbourne's rise as a major city of international status and standing, and its presence displays awesome cultural, intellectual, financial, economic, sporting, and investment muscle. Its universities include The University of Melbourne, Monash University, and RMIT University ranked on any world ranking. The best secondary schools in Australia are here and they include Scotch College, Melbourne Grammar School, Melbourne High School and MacRobertson Girls High School. In sport there is at least the Australian Tennis Open, the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Melbourne Cup in horseracing, the AFL Grand Final is played at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Other stadiums include the Etihad Stadium, Princes Park, and Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. This could go on and on, and just like Britain's Economist Intelligence Unit proclaimed it as the world's most liveable city and it will soon take over from Sydney and become the biggest city in Australia. This is a grand old city.

Great for

  • It has anything you would want to do with your time in your life.
  • Elegant architecture
  • Pie face shop
  • Theatre and restaurants
  • Wide tree lined streets and boulevard

Not great for

  • Traffic. Because of Melbourne's development, it is becoming more and more congested, so much work needs to be done about wider roads and more tunnels and bridges to move traffic quicker
  • More car park buildings would help with parking.

Who lives here?

  • Families with kids

Woodend

"A nice small village that tells you the time of day."

Small and insignificant town with population of 3000. Nearby Kyneton and Gisborne are twice the size. Freezing in winter as next to affluent and wealthy Mount Macedon and this means lots of dangerous black ice on the roads. In summertime, forested areas mean high fire risks and this town narrowly missed the damage caused by Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983 which came within reach of the town a couple of kilometres away. Your lifestyle is very much restricted. For instance if hospital treatment is required, travel to Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat or Bendigo may be required and that means travelling distances return will be around 200 kilometres. Shopping is restricted to basic items. Need Pirelli tyres for your BMW? You'll have to travel to Sunbury (25 kms) to get them. If you're after brand clothing from Hugo Boss, Armani, Burberry, etc then you'll have to travel long distances to get them otherwise go online. After a university degree? The nearest is an hour's drive away if you want to avoid the lonely method of distance education. Want a particular kind of beer? Again, travel is required. Absence of fast foods suppliers such as KFC, McDonalds, Hungry Jacks, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Eagle Boys and others will leave you hungry if you are unwilling to eat the 'local bloke's cooking'. The restrictions from living in this area can go on and on and they point to the extra costs associated with living in isolation from major areas of economic concentration that must be borne by the Woodendner. Unless you're in business operating a farm or a hotel or something sensible to justify living here, it doesn't take many brains to realise that the best city in Australia - Melbourne - with nearly four million people is where they want to live, not Woodend. However, making Woodend a place for your weekend getaway might be worth entertaining as many properties are quite expansive in land size and building quality, many with the 'WOW' factor. Famous names from the past include the Ponsford family (cricket legend), Richard Pratt and family of VISY (owners of Campaspe Park for 4 years), Sir Roderick Carnegie (former CEO of CRA Ltd - now Rio Tinto Ltd), and the Barker family (manufacturers of truck trailers).

Great for

  • Quiet everyday as freeway by-pass means most traffic ignores the town passing by.
  • Lots of bushwalking and nature types of activities
  • Overall, a nice town in the daytime.

Not great for

  • Pitch black dark at night, unlike cities which have lots of street light reflections to the clouds which brighten many a scary dark night
  • Nearest university is an hour's drive away.
  • Basic facilities means extra living costs associated with travelling to other areas and fire risks.

Jake. You must be posting as a joke. All the items you raised as issues are why Woodend is great. It is a joke post was it not. I mean complaining it is dark in the MACEDON ranges is like complaining there is too many people in Melbourne.
