Mango Hill

"New Farm for straight people on the northside"

If you're a fan of roundabouts, then Discovery Drive is for you.

North Lakes (Mango Hill west) is a 'planned community' by Stockland on the Brisbane's northside to rival southside's Springfield Lakes by Delfin. The houses are new and large, but fall into the McMansion trap at times, and yard sizes are minuscule.

The attitude in the area seems to be that if you can't get to it in five minutes, it isn't worth having. This mirrors the mood in New Farm being so wonderfully close to 'everything', and anything two suburbs or more away is in the bush.

Westfield North Lakes is a nice touch, but a nightmare to get to since there is just one entrance to it from Memorial Drive off Anzac Avenue (unless you're coming down from the north on Bruce Highway). Then once you get in from Memorial Drive, do laps through limited parking out the front to see if there are any spaces, or eventually make your way to the back where car parking is more plentiful. This should have been better thought-out from the start by the developer and Westfield.

Public transport is atrocious, but this is thanks to state government inaction -- a railway line has been planned for nearby for more than 100 years. The nearest train station is Petrie, but it is busy enough already (how do you get there? Drive of course, or a rare bus). Unlike older, established suburbs, the roads are quite narrower so you have to park on the footpath or risk being scalded by a local resident reading the riot act if you dare park on the road the traditional way (there are an actual set rules that cover this, apparently). Parking on the footpath takes away the reason for the word "foot" in the name.

These types of suburbs are popular with new families, but when you take into consideration the lacking public transport and that these families have probably two cars, then the kids will grow-up and eventually have their own car each... be prepared for more vehicles having to park somewhere. They won't necessarily be rusted wrecks that don't go anywhere as features on front yards, it will be an issue.

North Lakes is now ten years old. It is still nice now, but keep in mind what happens as communities get older and bigger (Stockland expect it to eventually house 25,000 people). The new developments in Mango Hill across the other side of Anzac Avenue isn't any better. The artificial lakes are also nice, however it is a shame the singing ducklings from their television commercials in the 2000s aren't there anymore.

As I've discovered, is far from being a "New Farm". I moved here from Sydney as visually looks fine, but the people are very downmarket...low socioeconomic area....so many ute driving, drag racing bogans who walk around like they have just got out of bed. My new house is almost ready at Hendra and I can't wait to escape Mango Hill....I would recommend anyone moving to Brisbane to buy max. 15kms from the city. There are some really nice city suburb areas, such as Hendra, Ascot, Clayfield, Hamilton - tree lined streets, nice houses, with nice 'normal' people. ...and only a 15 min drive to the city and less than 5 mins drive to racecourse road with nice cafes, bars or riverside parks etc. There are also so many nice restaurants, cafes, bars etc around the city areas, where as in Mango Hill/North Lakes, there are very few and the shops are not very exciting either.

Edithvale

"Always loved Edithvale"

Have spent many long visits in Edithvale for more than 30 years, with relatives living in the suburb. Like the rest of Melbourne generally, I've never wanted to leave.

It is a nice suburban area with few 'dead spots', very close to the bay with beautiful golden sandy beaches and colourful beach huts -- these beaches are busy on hot summer days with visitors arriving by train to enjoy them (sounds and looks like a modern-day version of what people traditionally did back in the days of steam).

Whilst lacking in "retail therapy", nearby Chelsea and Mordialloc are there for day-to-day shopping, while Southland is just up the Nepean Highway. However for a traditional suburban environment, Edithvale is a friendly area with quality housing and numerous parks. Add the rail service and it is a great place with lots to offer and more close nearby with great transit connections. I would love to live there permanently and always enjoy revisiting.
