Port Melbourne

"The best place in Melbourne!"

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. We live in Beach Street, right on the beach - no road between us - literally on the sand in one of the Mirvac towers. The only sounds we hear are of the seagulls, the putt-putt of boats and the happy chatter of people strolling along the promenade. Great restaurants and more recently we have the welcome addition of Thomas Dux grocers amongst the Bay St shopping strip. A short light rail ride into town and a great atmosphere in Port whether it's day or night. We went to Hawaii last year and declared that Port Melbourne has much more to offer!

Hi wendelle,

I couldn't agree more with your review of Port Melbourne. Before I moved into the area, I was really worried about noise, but it's such a non-issue once you are settled in.

What's your fav restaurant? I'm loving Dundas & Fausett (I think that's how you spell it) in Albert Park on Vic Ave, especially since they did the renovation.

Any suggestions?

PS. Can't wait till summer kicks back in, it's freezing at the moment!

Hi AJ,

Dalmatino's in Port is definitely our favourite, but the new City Tiler (the old Gill's nursery building on the corner of Graham & Bay St) is great for a light lunch or just a quick coffee. Both have home-made food and are really good value for money, with good service as well. Try the beef ragout at Dalmatino's, it's only about $22 and is fantastic.
Our other favourite place is the Westin in the city. The Allegro restaurant has a fabulous Sunday lunch with a small jazz band and is $75 a head, including a glass of beer or bubbly. The food just keeps coming and coming, with a buffet cheese and dessert bar. I promise you you'll walk out with a full belly and a smile on your face.

Cheers, wendelle

Hey wendelle,

I went to Dalmatino's a few months back. I liked it, but I didn't think the menu had much to choose from? I'll have to have another look though, as what we ordered we did really like.

Funny you mention the Westin, I used to live in one of the apartments there. Allegro is fantastic, really great food.

What are your thoughts on the restaurants down by Station Pier? I've only tried Campari and Waterfront. Loved Waterfront, didn't like Campari at all. The service was really bad at Campari, and the food was pretty average as well. But I've only been once, so maybe it was a bad night.
