Suburbs for families with good schools, no more than 30 minutes from the CBD.

My wife and I are considering moving from Sydney to Melbourne with our two kids (ages 5 and 11). We'd like to live no further than 30 minutes from the CBD. The ideal suburb has a good public primary and high school and a low crime rate -- generally as family friendly as possible. Our rental budget is between 600-700 a week. We are both professionals and definitely city people, so the closer to the city the better. Any suggestions? I would be working in Richmond. Is that a decent suburb for families?

Perhaps Doncaster , Bulleen or Lower Templestowe. You could find something spacious and well appointed for your rental budget. It is one of the safest suburbs in Melbourne, has fantastic facilities and a nice choice of primary and high schools. The Eastern Freeway provides a direct commute by bus or car to the CBD or Richmond. Richmond is a much older inner city suburb, and although many families reside in Richmond, I could say that it is nowhere near as safe as the areas I mentioned. Doncaster is in the eastern part of Melbourne, and is very family orientated. Most residents are couples with children, retirees and professionals. It is, however, very much suburbia, which may not appeal to your preference for the inner city. Homes with gardens and nice backyards has been the norm, although luxury apartment living has flourished over the last few years with great success. Richmond is far more hustle and bustle in the busy main roads and shopping centres...and is predominantly narrow streets with tight housing. I lived in Richmond as a child and have a special place in my heart for it...but now that I have a family, I love the abundant facilities, sense of community and open spaces of Doncaster.... Good luck with your move....

Thank you very much. I'll look in to these suburbs today. I did a quick check on Doncaster and it looks like there are a lot o housing options, and the prices are quite reasonable. However, I did a quick search on http://jp.ptv.vic.gov.au/ to see how long it would take for me to commute to work and it came up with an hour commute to Richomd. Does that seem right to you? Seems like Doncaster would be a lot closer than that.

I drive each day from Templestowe to Spencer Street and that takes me an hour. I don't think Richmond would take you that long, about 45 minutes in high peak.
