The ultimate list of Gluten free restaurants in Melbourne

My wife is celiac and every time we try and find someplace to eat out it becomes a real hassle. Let's start a list of all gluten free friendly dining options in Melbourne.

Here's my initial list of gluten free restaurants that I have been to:

1. Mamasita - 11 Collins St Melbourne, if you want Mexican this is the best option
2. Akachochin - 33 S Wharf Promenade, great Japanese options at decent prices
3. No 35 - Sofitel Hotel, 35, 25 Collins St, Melbourne VIC 3000 - nice fine dining with plenty of gluten free options and an amazing view.

My girlfriend is also coeliac, and these are some of our favourites:

1. Red Door, Windsor (http://www.reddooryumcha.com). The only GF dumplings in Melbourne!
2. Red Spice Rd, Melbourne CBD (http://redspiceroad.com). Excellent Thai. The McKillop St one is the best.
3. Fodmap, Albert Park (http://www.foddiescafe.com). EVERYTHING on menu is GF (also caters for lactose/dairy free).
4. Gattica, Balaclava (http://www.gattica.com.au). Great little cafe on Carlisle St.
5. Red Emperor, Southbank (http://www.redemperor.com.au). Only Chinese restaurant we've found that if GF friendly.
6. Chocolate Buddha, Melbourne CBD (http://chocolatebuddha.com.au). Good value Japanese in Fed Square.

Also as mentioned in the title, Mamasita is awesome and probably our favorite! Best margaritas and charred corn in town.

Thanks RPM1984! Do you find they make it obvious what is gluten free on their menus or you just have to make mention when you book?

I ate at The More the Better on the weekend, a Korean fusion restaurant. They had good gluten free options and the menu indicated the items by having GF next to it.

I'm finding GF is becoming more frequent in restaurant menus. I ordered pizza from crust.com.au and found they were really good at labelling all food sensitivities on their menu (including gluten free and celiac).

Thanks digitalbard, Yes, Crust is one of the only pizza places my wife trusts with their Gluten Free menus.

@Jason Spencer one thing to note, and what a lot of restaurants get wrong/don't understand, is that there is a difference between "gluten free" and "coeliac friendly".

Just because food is gluten free, doesn't mean cross contamination can't occur. Restaurants like Gazi claim to have gluten free options, and they are - but they use the same grill when making unsafe food. This means cross contamination can occur. So it's best to always mention to the restaurant that the patron(s) are coeliac, to ensure food is prepared seperately and safely. The ones i listed seem to understand this issue well.

Caffe Strada in Ivanhoe is totally GF. My son is anaphylactic to wheat and rye so the cross contamination is an issue for us. This cafe is very strict and has a varied, delicious menu.

Red Robyn cafe in Camberwell is completely gluten free. They serve breakfast and lunch. They're a bit exxy but I think it's worth it. The food is really yum!

Totally agree with RPM1984. A lot of places offer gluten free but have no understanding of cross contamination or how to handle gluten free food properly. For example lord of the fries label their foods gluten free however they are all cooked in a universal fryer.

Bopha Devi - is used by the Coeliac Society
Pier 35 - in port melb the owner has a coeliac daughter
Absolutely Gluten Free in Werribee is of course entirely gluten free and they've done a gluten free high tea in the past.
I second Foddies in Albert park they are fantastic, Red Robyn in Camberwell are great so are 8D house in Camberwell which only have gluten free dumpling pastry and understand cc well.
Right near Caffe Strada there is apparently a fish n chip shop called Theo's which has a separate fryer. I'll be stopping in, within the next few weeks.
In Bendigo there is the freedom bakery 100% gluten free, for those who just want to pick up frozen goods there is Heaven's Bakehouse in East Keilor.

Taco Bill stores are generally fantastic, the one in Melton has a coeliac family member of the owners so they take it very seriously, have a coeliac society certification in their lobby, you can get discounts with your coeliac member card and they are working to get everything on the menu gluten free.

There is also spudbar (various locations) which is 100% gluten free and amazing! As well as Thr1ve at emporium. They're two of my favourite places to eat out and they aren't too expensive, they're healthy and delicious!

Their sister restaurants Hanoi Hannah and Tokyo Tina also have heaps of GF options and either have a GF menu available or it's written all over the menu (all three are in Prahran/Windsor on or just off Chapel St)
Wild Rice in Williamstown (cheap too which is great)
The Station Hotel in Footscray best steaks ever
Squires Loft
Chin Chin CBD

These are the ones I can comfortably say I've not been sick at.

I just had dinner on the weekend at No 35 restaurant at the Sofitel Melbourne. My wife had an amazing meal, so many gluten free options. Started with an amazing salmon, then scallops with cauliflower purée, then for mains we had pork belly and and slow cooked beef cheeks. The desert was great too. Highly recommend for a fine dining gluten free experience.

Re gluten free options in Doncaster at Westfield Bangkok Thai has the most options and we love it. Billy's Lounge is our goto for brunch and Sporting Globe is starting to bring in some options too. For cafe's Little Sparrow and Shingle Inn have options. Nearby, I find the Doncaster Hotel is very limited with their options so we choose to go to the Sir Henry Barkly hotel in Heidelberg which has many options.

Thanks a lot JVS.
May I confirm that although the menus at this places might mention about potential cross contamination, you and your wife (I think your wife is the one who has coeliac) have not had any issues when mentioning coealiac food needs so the restaurants have been able to cater for these needs and of course there has not been any coeliac side effects after eating at these places?

As previously mentioned in some comments, sadly, not all restaurants really understand what making food for someone with Coeliac really means 🙁.
Thanks

I highly recommend the following places, safe for people with Coeliac:
* Sweet Salt (delicious burgers & donuts), http://www.sweetsalt.com.au/
* Primo (Pizzas: Lamborghini & Classic Margherita, absolutely the best!), http://eatprimo.com.au/
* Caffe Strada, as previously mentioned
* Eat Cannoli, http://www.eatcannoli.com.au/
* Gelato Papa, http://www.gelatopapa.com.au/

The above places are certified by coealiac.org.au, we are so grateful for these places, such delicious food (https://www.coeliac.org.au/s/the-gluten-free-diet/accredited-businesses#ca-accreditation-vic-tas)

The following places have also been great, they have been very patient and have taken extra precautions to avoid cross-contamination:
* Betty's Burgers at The Glen Shopping Centre in Glen Waverley
* Rusty Water Brewery Restaurant & Bar at 1821 Phillip Island Rd, Cowes VIC 3922
* Island Whole Foods at Unit 4/75 Chapel St, Cowes VIC 3922, http://www.islandwholefoods.com.au/
